DH and his flag pole dream….

1000 replies

Lilysienna1 · 02/02/2024 23:51

DH mentioned a few years ago, that he has ‘always wanted’ to have a flag on display in the front garden. A proper flag on a pole, that we would raise up every morning, and ‘fly at half mast’ when the occasion calls for it.

I have never ever even thought of having a flag. We are British and I know it’s quite common in America, but not so much here. DH isn’t a football fan, so it’s nothing to do with the flag flying we see during the World Cup and the like.

last year, for Christmas he said the only present he would wish for, was to have that flag. He was most disappointed with the watch and aftershave he received instead.

He has now mentioned it to 13 year old DD who thinks it’s ‘kinda cool’ and she could imagine using it behind her for tik tok dances.

So now, I’m being made out to be highly unreasonable and a bore, for saying I do not want to raise a bloody flag every morning and see it outside the front of my house every day. I did try to compromise by saying ‘maybe’ a small one in the back garden, but DH says it’s to go out the front only, and why should we be ashamed of patriotism.

We don’t live in a grand estate home, just a detached house in a redrow cul-de-sac. The neighbours wouldn’t be affected as there are large trees between our only neigbours drive and ours, and we are on the corner.

However, everyone that comes in and out our road will see it as it’s the first house.

what would you do?? Give in and say yes to DH and his flag pole or put your foot down? Am I really being that unreasonable and boring? Does anyone else fly a flag? 🤦🏻‍♀️

I can’t share your humour. I don’t even think you realise that being anti English is also a hate crime. You could be charged and prosecuted.

Yeah be careful👀someone might contact Prevent!

Obviously the Tory Party can be as criminal as they want. But let’s just chase the little people who aren’t jingoistic.

Newchapterbeckons · 03/02/2024 20:17

I am referring to some of the other posters. Some of them are full quite seriously of hatred for their own country.

Well that’s good!

Apology accepted.

Prevent is there to do just that in all its forms.

Try moving to the USA and expressing that opinion. You wouldn’t get far because Americans have pride in their flag - it means something. The way ours used to before it was highjacked. We’re not all bigots and racists because we have pride in our flag.

  1. no thanks
  2. I didn’t mention any flag in particular

@PeggyPoggleshaw

"Obvious reasons"

For us the top 2:

  • Would make us look like twats.
  • They're bloody noisy.

Flying the Union flag in your garden would make you look like twats? What a hateful view of the country you live in.

Thementalloadisreal · 03/02/2024 20:29

BruFord · 03/02/2024 20:10

@Thementalloadisreal So many things are tacky though and tbh, that’s one of the great things about the UK- we have the freedom to visually express ourselves through our dress, hairstyles, home and garden decor, etc.

I find gnomes, pond decorations, and twee-looking statues in other people’s gardens tacky. Some Christmas displays are amazingly tacky and I can’t stand Astro turf either. But it’s their property so they can do what they like. How many people had the Ukrainian flag in their windows as a sign of solidarity, loads!

In some countries, people are banned from flying certain flags. Israel recently banned the Palestinian flag, for example; China strictly limits the use of the Taiwanese flag.

If we start judging people for flying their country’s flag, we’re moving in a dangerous direction, aren’t we?

Edited

I haven’t said anything about the country’s flag.
You won’t convince me that someone with a flagpole outside their 3 bed semi detached house has good taste. That’s all. It looks stupid. I’m free to judge people for doing stupid things and I’m not moving in any direction, dangerous or otherwise.

Edit to add, I sometimes drive past a house with a skull and crossbones flag on a massive flagpole. It looks stupid. I’m judging the stylistic choices and taste of a person choosing to erect a massive flagpole outside their terraced house. Yes people are free to make their own tacky choices. And I am free to judge them for it.

But we live in the U.K.🤔

You sound more suited to the US.

So, because we live in the UK we shouldn't have pride in our flag like almost every other country on Earth does?

TeabySea · 03/02/2024 20:31

I don't understand "Pride in your country"= flying a flag.
It's a bit of coloured material flapping about.

Equally, unless you're a royal residence or embassy, I don't understand why you'd fly a flag at half-mast.

I would just flatly refuse if my DH suggested this. However he's welcome to decorate his office/shed however he wishes.

🙄 I bet you wouldn't say that to someone from another country about THEIR flag.

@ReadingSoManyThreads 😆

Janniss543 · 03/02/2024 20:34

We have 2 in our front garden. A St George Cross and a Northumberland flag. You see quite a few around here. I love them and I also collect coins 🤣

ClaraLane · 03/02/2024 20:35

My Nan and Grandad have a flagpole in their garden. I can’t remember when it got put up but it’s certainly been there for at least 20+ years as I left school in 2005 and remember bringing him a flag back from Canada in 2003. He collected loads of flags from different countries all over the world over the years and when he died last year two of my cousins lowered the flag to half mast for my Nan. He used to fly whichever ones he fancied, not sure who’s in charge of the flags now, I’ll have to ask her. Theirs is in the back garden though, not the front and he was ex Merchant Navy so that may have had something to do with it?

Just because YOU don't have pride in the UK flag, that doesn't mean many others shouldn't have. And they don't deserve to be derided and mocked and insulted for having pride in - and loving their own country.

It never ceases to amaze me how SOME Brits actually loathe their own country and half the people in it. It's quite sickening really. I see a lot of it on the internet, especially on Twitter/X, and on here.

Would you call a family with African heritage hanging their flag ‘tacky’ ? No, I didn’t think so. You only ‘see’ certain forms of racism.

And yet you are deriding me for having opposite views.

Why are you right and I’m wrong? Everyone l know is a bit dubious about a Union Jack or England flag ( football aside)

100% this. ^ As I said to another poster, these people slating and bashing the UK flag/the England flag would never say such nasty things to people of different heritages.

Point out where I DERIDED you! I mean actually you personally.

You can't because it never happened ... I simply said it is sickening how SOME British people seem to loathe their own country and half the people in it. They don't know they're born living in the UK! Talk about biting the hand that feeds you!

Likewise. I'm baffled as to why anyone who hates this country so much doesn't just leave.
