DH and his flag pole dream….

1000 replies

Lilysienna1 · 02/02/2024 23:51

DH mentioned a few years ago, that he has ‘always wanted’ to have a flag on display in the front garden. A proper flag on a pole, that we would raise up every morning, and ‘fly at half mast’ when the occasion calls for it.

I have never ever even thought of having a flag. We are British and I know it’s quite common in America, but not so much here. DH isn’t a football fan, so it’s nothing to do with the flag flying we see during the World Cup and the like.

last year, for Christmas he said the only present he would wish for, was to have that flag. He was most disappointed with the watch and aftershave he received instead.

He has now mentioned it to 13 year old DD who thinks it’s ‘kinda cool’ and she could imagine using it behind her for tik tok dances.

So now, I’m being made out to be highly unreasonable and a bore, for saying I do not want to raise a bloody flag every morning and see it outside the front of my house every day. I did try to compromise by saying ‘maybe’ a small one in the back garden, but DH says it’s to go out the front only, and why should we be ashamed of patriotism.

We don’t live in a grand estate home, just a detached house in a redrow cul-de-sac. The neighbours wouldn’t be affected as there are large trees between our only neigbours drive and ours, and we are on the corner.

However, everyone that comes in and out our road will see it as it’s the first house.

what would you do?? Give in and say yes to DH and his flag pole or put your foot down? Am I really being that unreasonable and boring? Does anyone else fly a flag? 🤦🏻‍♀️

There are only three true flags, the rest are just on trend scraps of material.

Our local council and police love waving the others in our faces.

They're only fit for dusters.

Try moving to the USA and expressing that opinion. You wouldn’t get far because Americans have pride in their flag - it means something. The way ours used to before it was highjacked. We’re not all bigots and racists because we have pride in our flag.

But we live in the U.K.🤔

You sound more suited to the US.

Showed this thread to my American husband and he would like to 'buy the poor guy a flag pole'.

I think we are the only country that's embarrassed to have national pride.

And no-one on this thread is stopping to apply common sense and ask themselves why. Divide and rule is alive and well on MN to the point where it would make the Tories proud.

Actually I’m sorry but I don’t like the proms much. I try, and I haven’t told my parents. But I just can’t get on with it. It’s too over excitable about things that you’ve heard over and over. And I don’t like looking across at other audience members. I’m a proscenium arch type.

Oh sorry, that was to newchapter

If i am racist to fly a union flag here in Britain does that make anyone that flies their country's flag in their homeland racist i.e if a Pakistani flew their flag on their front lawn in Islamabad or a Jamaican flew their flag from their balcony in Kingston ?

Calliopespa · 03/02/2024 19:50

Newchapterbeckons · 03/02/2024 19:24

How deep does this peculiar anti British sentiment actually go?

Do they also hate -

British food with flags?
British proms?
British wine?
Dramas?
Royal Family?
Winston Churchill?
Veterans?
The army?
All of our history?

I fail to see how how it would ever stop at flags. I imagine the hate dressed up as virtue runs far deeper than flags and bunting.

I can’t imagine why anyone would choose to remain living in a country so repugnant to them? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Edited

… and actually British wine was not the best inclusion on that list.

Fish n chips would have me clapping, or Yorkshire pudding. Or trifle. But not so much British wine.

Newchapterbeckons · 03/02/2024 19:56

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 03/02/2024 19:32

I dislike all of those except dramas and history.

Not sure that makes me ‘filled with hate’

I mean your honesty is breathtaking and kinda admirable. Would you care to add to my list?

Maybe the National Trust?
Nato?

The fact you can’t bring yourself to eat British food makes me sad, does this extend to branded goods?

No, apparently it’s only our flag. Everyone else can be as patriotic and celebratory as they wish….

Stillnormal · 03/02/2024 19:59

I wonder whether you need planning permission for a flag pole? Maybe call the council and check….

Not bothered about NATO.

Like the National Trust and British foods.

Hate the Royals and The Proms😴

Obviously this is treason in your eyes😂

My parents have a flexi flag pole and often change it. They've had the jolly tiger, Ukraine, Palestine, football team and the Welsh flag

To think in a few short months we could end up with people like this in charge of running our country. Making decisions for us, shaping policy and law. It’s really opened my eyes to a whole new world of anti British hatred that is fermenting under the radar in the name of misplaced ‘inclusivity’ and goes well beyond the usual suspects and hard left.

I can’t share your humour. I don’t even think you realise that being anti English is also a hate crime. You could be charged and prosecuted.

@Thementalloadisreal So many things are tacky though and tbh, that’s one of the great things about the UK- we have the freedom to visually express ourselves through our dress, hairstyles, home and garden decor, etc.

I find gnomes, pond decorations, and twee-looking statues in other people’s gardens tacky. Some Christmas displays are amazingly tacky and I can’t stand Astro turf either. But it’s their property so they can do what they like. How many people had the Ukrainian flag in their windows as a sign of solidarity, loads!

In some countries, people are banned from flying certain flags. Israel recently banned the Palestinian flag, for example; China strictly limits the use of the Taiwanese flag.

If we start judging people for flying their country’s flag, we’re moving in a dangerous direction, aren’t we?

Well let’s hope not, because it’s insideous and illegal.

Just the other day a Welsh man was charged and found guilty of racially aggravated assault against two English people. He thought they were fair game - the court didn’t agree. The stuff that is being spouted on here has real
time consequences. It’s not okay.
