DH and his flag pole dream….

1000 replies

Lilysienna1 · 02/02/2024 23:51

DH mentioned a few years ago, that he has ‘always wanted’ to have a flag on display in the front garden. A proper flag on a pole, that we would raise up every morning, and ‘fly at half mast’ when the occasion calls for it.

I have never ever even thought of having a flag. We are British and I know it’s quite common in America, but not so much here. DH isn’t a football fan, so it’s nothing to do with the flag flying we see during the World Cup and the like.

last year, for Christmas he said the only present he would wish for, was to have that flag. He was most disappointed with the watch and aftershave he received instead.

He has now mentioned it to 13 year old DD who thinks it’s ‘kinda cool’ and she could imagine using it behind her for tik tok dances.

So now, I’m being made out to be highly unreasonable and a bore, for saying I do not want to raise a bloody flag every morning and see it outside the front of my house every day. I did try to compromise by saying ‘maybe’ a small one in the back garden, but DH says it’s to go out the front only, and why should we be ashamed of patriotism.

We don’t live in a grand estate home, just a detached house in a redrow cul-de-sac. The neighbours wouldn’t be affected as there are large trees between our only neigbours drive and ours, and we are on the corner.

However, everyone that comes in and out our road will see it as it’s the first house.

what would you do?? Give in and say yes to DH and his flag pole or put your foot down? Am I really being that unreasonable and boring? Does anyone else fly a flag? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Brexit voter, bulldog tattoo and thinks there's too many foreigners here?

Such irony. Could you possibly be any more narrow minded?

Newchapterbeckons · 03/02/2024 13:30

How did they cope on jubilee days or coronations? Or May Days or bank holidays? Or World Cup days? Or school dress up days when you come in National colours??

Do they hide in darkened rooms throwing holy water over themselves???

Rocking back and forth due to the millions of ‘sadists’ lining the streets of London waving - whisper it quietly - ssshhh British flags of all things. The shame of it. Imagine British people waving British flags they should be on their knees praying for forgiveness and attonement for their mere existence….

Have you anything more educated to add, or is that the sum total of your informative contribution 🤣🤣

Watching the incessant attempts at point scoring with personal remarks is really irksome.

I am more than happy for someone to disagree with what I have said.

I am not happy for someone to take me to task over something I have not said.

People like that never admit errors. Even when in black and white on previous posts. I had it happen once to me. It’s very strange behaviour! I wonder how they act in real life.

You need to take an unconscious bias training programme.

Very good. Have you been on one? Did they say anything about how claiming to know how all your Indian and Pakistani friends as a block would think might be a tiny bit... racist?

‘Them’ is plural and othering.

Yes. Yes, it is.

But I have just scoured though every post I've written on this thread. I simply haven't used the word at all, in any context. Yet there you are posting it in quote marks as if I have. You are consistently lying about what I have written.

It’s ‘hear hear’ by the way!

Loopytiles · 03/02/2024 13:37

Saw a pretty light up EU flag in central London the other day (looked to be in a protest). Also fun pirate and rainbow ones and windsock type things at a music festival. Probably not what DH has in mind!

I hope so… 😁 I hadn’t even considered this… off to check!

Sorry op but this made me laugh. Hope you find your restricted covenants 🤞

On a serious note, I really refuse to be forced into shame and instructed to hate my country, hate my flag.

We have an imperfect but beautiful island that has so much going for it, the culture, the history, the accessible art, incredible world class music scene, museums and a kind country that does its best to be fair and inclusive ( with still a way to go but we will get there)

I just will not have this endless attack on our culture and heritage. You will not force an environment of hate, grim blame and shame and silence our celebrations.

So take the hate elsewhere, and let people fly their many flags and bring a warmth and enrichment of living altogether in peace and the progress we have made. 🇬🇧❤️

This thread has really got to you! Why? How many flags do you have outside your home?

Are you willing to understand at all, that racists like to fly the flag, and racist organisations use them a lot in this country? Of course not all flag-flyers are racist. But do you acknowledge that racists often like to fly the flag? Or is it something people are simply making up?

And this kind of comment is embarrassing.

ginasevern · 03/02/2024 13:41

He wants a penis extension but he might also be a closet "Reform UK" voter. All the people I know with flag poles (I live on a white working class council estate) are Brexit voting, anti Johnny Foreigner and somehere to the right of Genghis Khan politically.

Just saying.

Phineyj · 03/02/2024 13:41

@RamblingEclectic that is pretty unusual for England unless you are in an area with a large Armed Forces presence of some kind - Portsmouth, Chatham, for example.

We had one but lived in the country. It was for the Welsh flag. Husbands idea of course 🙄

My Welsh grandad was a vicar and he put his massive badass welsh flag on the roof of the church every time Wales played in the Six Nations. It was his do not disturb sign hahaha when my gran died last year the current vicar (my friend) found the flag stuffed in the back of a cupboard and got it back on the roof for her funeral. I had no idea she had even found it - it was such a gesture.

We are not allowed our flags, we have to have ‘due regard’ for the ‘dreadful things’ you know.

Honestly OP, given the way this thread has deteriorated and brought forth a load of covert frothing racists, I would imagine you are even less likely to want to accede to your DH request...

Mumsnet is full of racists. They get all excited on threads about flags and gollywogs. Often with limited comprehension skills.

sonjadog · 03/02/2024 13:44

The hyperbole is mighty on this thread.

If you do get a flag, OP, make sure that you look into ways to fasten it so that the cord does not go bang bang bang against the pole when it is windy. I live in a country where flags are common and the noise from my neighbour's flagpole drives me mad. It is about 30m away, but the noise really carries so being in a detached house may not be enough.
