DH and his flag pole dream….

1000 replies

Lilysienna1 · 02/02/2024 23:51

DH mentioned a few years ago, that he has ‘always wanted’ to have a flag on display in the front garden. A proper flag on a pole, that we would raise up every morning, and ‘fly at half mast’ when the occasion calls for it.

I have never ever even thought of having a flag. We are British and I know it’s quite common in America, but not so much here. DH isn’t a football fan, so it’s nothing to do with the flag flying we see during the World Cup and the like.

last year, for Christmas he said the only present he would wish for, was to have that flag. He was most disappointed with the watch and aftershave he received instead.

He has now mentioned it to 13 year old DD who thinks it’s ‘kinda cool’ and she could imagine using it behind her for tik tok dances.

So now, I’m being made out to be highly unreasonable and a bore, for saying I do not want to raise a bloody flag every morning and see it outside the front of my house every day. I did try to compromise by saying ‘maybe’ a small one in the back garden, but DH says it’s to go out the front only, and why should we be ashamed of patriotism.

We don’t live in a grand estate home, just a detached house in a redrow cul-de-sac. The neighbours wouldn’t be affected as there are large trees between our only neigbours drive and ours, and we are on the corner.

However, everyone that comes in and out our road will see it as it’s the first house.

what would you do?? Give in and say yes to DH and his flag pole or put your foot down? Am I really being that unreasonable and boring? Does anyone else fly a flag? 🤦🏻‍♀️

I'm quite glad that I'm not the only person with a neighbour flying the Jolly Roger.

Although the number of pirates in the UK is rather concerning

🤣🤣🤣

How do you know he wouldn't be happy about that?.

How do you know he would be?

BaronessBomburst · 03/02/2024 13:09

The carnival flags went up this morning! Some are the red, yellow, green party flag, and others are in the colours of the village prince and carnival committee. There's bunches of balloons on the flagpoles too.

Brandyginger · 03/02/2024 13:10

I’m team flag pole IF you can get planning permission and it’s not against any local covenants.

then I’m going to insist on a variety of different flags (but only the one flag pole mind) on different days, but broadly mindful of global festivals, national holidays and so on. And it would need to be at half mast as a token of respect whenever something significant happened.

growing up one of my neighbours had a flag pole and put a lot of effort into his flags and as kids we loved working out why he’d put up a particular flag on a certain day,

UsualChaos · 03/02/2024 13:12

Bahahaha - I thought this was going to be a euphemism!

Is he striving to be like the Admiral in Mary Poppins?

WaterHound · 03/02/2024 13:12

I didn't say I had reported you. Plenty of others quoted your deleted post as they found it offensive and wanted to disagree with you

Not true.

If you get pleasure from something that you know might cause other people distress you're a sadist.

How in the name of all that's holy might the Union flag cause someone distress?

Because, as many, many people have made clear on this thread, they will assume, rightly or wrongly, that it is being flown by a far-right nutter.

Rewis · 03/02/2024 13:16

Here most gardens in older neighbourhoods have a flagpole. Most don't have the flag up every day, mostly on 'flag days' and sepcial occations. Some have their family crest. Newer neighbourhoods don't have them. I really don't think anything about it.

I kinda find his enthusiasm endearing.

Flatulence · 03/02/2024 13:17

Christ no. No no no.

You might get away with it if you lived somewhere rural but on a newish-build estate it's ridiculous.

Fuck sake! Take your incessant posting elsewhere, it’s derailing.

Peggy save your breath. It’s unfathomable to the rest of us too.

Anyone that flies a flag is apparently a racist nutter 😂

Honestly OP, given the way this thread has deteriorated and brought forth a load of covert frothing racists, I would imagine you are even less likely to want to accede to your DH request...

Does wanting to fly the Union flag make someone racist? Genuine question.

HappySonHappyMum · 03/02/2024 13:18

If you live in Dagenham you're almost unreasonable not to have one. I regularly see Union Jacks, George Crosses, Rainbow flags, Jolly Rogers as well as flags from all over the world. If they're not on flag poles they're draped from peoples windows. What's the issue - it's only English people that have a problem celebrating their own nationality.

Then they're wrong. Very wrong. In any case, I really couldn't give a shiny shite what others think, particularly if they're like some in this thread who are embarrassed by our national flag. Far-left nutters, if you will. And, no, I'm not right leaning, far from it.

Brexit voter, bulldog tattoo and thinks there's too many foreigners here?

The OP has not said anything about what flag he wants to fly. You've jumped to conclusions.

I drive past a number of flags flying from flagpoles on my way to work. One flies the county flag. The other two seem to be topical - so Olympic rings during Olympics for example. It can be a bit of fun. He can have his own flag raising ceremony though.

RamblingEclectic · 03/02/2024 13:28

Maybe a compromise would be a wall-mounted bracket flag pole - less visible from the street, a lot easier to maintain and get down in bad weather, and - if it's based on the US - that's much more common way for Americans to do so than a full flag pole.

I grew up in part of the States and full flag poles were for like schools and government buildings had, the homes that did it used wall mounted brackets. There was actually a British family the flew the Union flag this way there.

I now live in England in walking distance of a veteran's club, and there are flags everywhere. A few homes have the English flag like edged into the glass of their front door and lest we forget decals on their porches, a couple of the pubs have big wall size paintings... local high street tends to have flags for most of the year with Christmas trees in the winter, schools even do culture day parades that include the English flag along with others. A few families fly other flags like the Irish one. Not met anyone who thinks badly of it, except when the flags aren't taken very good care of. It's a bit odd seeing a ratty torn flag being flown.

Delphiniumandlupins · 03/02/2024 13:30

I might agree to a flagpole if different/seasonal flags were flown. I definitely would not be involved in daily raising and lowering and would not issue reminders if the pole was empty.
