DH and his flag pole dream….

1000 replies

Lilysienna1 · 02/02/2024 23:51

DH mentioned a few years ago, that he has ‘always wanted’ to have a flag on display in the front garden. A proper flag on a pole, that we would raise up every morning, and ‘fly at half mast’ when the occasion calls for it.

I have never ever even thought of having a flag. We are British and I know it’s quite common in America, but not so much here. DH isn’t a football fan, so it’s nothing to do with the flag flying we see during the World Cup and the like.

last year, for Christmas he said the only present he would wish for, was to have that flag. He was most disappointed with the watch and aftershave he received instead.

He has now mentioned it to 13 year old DD who thinks it’s ‘kinda cool’ and she could imagine using it behind her for tik tok dances.

So now, I’m being made out to be highly unreasonable and a bore, for saying I do not want to raise a bloody flag every morning and see it outside the front of my house every day. I did try to compromise by saying ‘maybe’ a small one in the back garden, but DH says it’s to go out the front only, and why should we be ashamed of patriotism.

We don’t live in a grand estate home, just a detached house in a redrow cul-de-sac. The neighbours wouldn’t be affected as there are large trees between our only neigbours drive and ours, and we are on the corner.

However, everyone that comes in and out our road will see it as it’s the first house.

what would you do?? Give in and say yes to DH and his flag pole or put your foot down? Am I really being that unreasonable and boring? Does anyone else fly a flag? 🤦🏻‍♀️

I'm sorry but I would judge negatively. If he's not a racist then he's surely eccentric!

Also, the deeds of our house say we are not allowed to erect a flag pole.

LadyBird1973 · 03/02/2024 12:54

Tbf @MasterBeth you've said some batshit things, on this thread. My personal favourite - flying a flag and not caring about whether this upsets the neighbours is akin to sadism.

Newchapterbeckons · 03/02/2024 12:54

Inefficient · 03/02/2024 12:52

I disagree. In the current climate, I find it inflammatory with the potential to increase racial tensions.

Having said that, of course it is not illegal to fly the flag. People like you and others are more than able to fly the flags should you wish. So it’s all good! But people are also allowed to have opinions and reactions about it.

Sorry what ‘current climate’ are you talking about?

Stop engaging with me. You can not make sweeping assumptions lumping people as ‘multicultural’ and expect not to be pulled up on it!

Your posts are ‘othering’ by assuming that anyone from a ‘multicultural’ background as you put it, would not see the British flag as their own.

Do you get it now? Or do I have to keep explaining to you why it is othering.

Many communities absolutely see the British flag as their own. If you still don’t understand this, I really can’t help you.

Some unconscious bias training would help.

These posters cannot see their own bias. It's painful to me to say this (ex Labour party member) but this is so common on the Left at the moment that it is quite worrying.

randomchap · 03/02/2024 12:55

I'm quite glad that I'm not the only person with a neighbour flying the Jolly Roger.

Although the number of pirates in the UK is rather concerning

There's one up in our village too this morning!

Winterborne74 · 03/02/2024 12:57

Yes, same here. Forgot to mention the Jolly Roger and the NHS flag during COVID.

Butteredtoast55 · 03/02/2024 12:57

There are quite a few round here, including our opposite neighbours and one in the back garden of a house that leads down to the river. That flies the Jolly Roger on the pole against their little jetty but I've also seen different pennants and things.
My DH would love one 😁

PeggyPoggleshaw · 03/02/2024 12:57

Newchapterbeckons · 03/02/2024 12:28

Yes that was a homophobic post.

We are getting them all today. All the leftie bigoted do gooders that are actually racist and homophobic and hide behind virtue signalling their ‘inclusivity’ which is totally fake and insincere.

Brilliantly put. 👏

Peakypolly · 03/02/2024 12:58

He does know that we are the only nation not allowed to show pride in our national flag doesn't he?

The Union Flag is the flag of the UK. If racists use it to promote racism it's up to the rest of us to remove that slur and take back the flag, not go on about how racists use it.

not a English flag due to the English flags unfortunate association with organisations like Britain First. so shouldn't the England flag be similarly "claimed back"?

I love a flag pole - there are 3 houses with them in our village and they fly all sorts of interesting ones that the DC enjoy researching. Our county coat of arms, the cricket team flag etc.

Pegsmum · 03/02/2024 12:59

There’s a house near me with a flag pole in the front garden. The flag gets changed fairly frequently and I love seeing it.

Calliopespa · 03/02/2024 12:59

TheBayLady · 03/02/2024 12:23

What is it like to be so bigoted ?

Ok so what is wrong with tartan slippers now? Maybe someone needs to start a thread what can people wear/like/do/ have in their garden that isn’t racist, weird, or gives people the ick? Tartan slippers are fairly innocuous surely.

I categorically did not say this. I have not "lumped people as multicultural". Please show me where I said this or withdraw your comments.

Thank you for acknowledging this - I am truly exasperated by this thread.

It’s like they have all received some really shit budget training somewhere and now lump everyone as a victim that’s needs ‘due regard’ for the ‘dreadful’ things that have happened regardless of whether it’s factually true or not, and no one is allowed to fly a flag unless you are a sadist, and you can’t express anything but hatred for the U.K. or you are at racist!

WTAH is this.

Calliopespa · 03/02/2024 13:00

Are tartan slippers sadistic?

I don’t engage with people like you - read your own posts, you are positively scary with your lack of awareness.

I am more than happy for someone to disagree with what I have said.

I am not happy for someone to take me to task over something I have not said.

PeggyPoggleshaw · 03/02/2024 13:00

Universalsnail · 03/02/2024 12:37

Tbh I would say ok whatever but you are not flying it and it has to be a union jack or like a silly none political flag not a English flag due to the English flags unfortunate association with organisations like Britain First.

Life's too short for someone to not get to experience something they've always wanted.
I'd find it pretty embarrassing though 😂

Edited

If my other half tried to dictate to me what flags I'm not allowed to fly he'd be getting told to eff off. He isn't my boss.

WaterHound · 03/02/2024 12:35

Perhaps you can tell me what it was I said that made you report it to MN? I genuinely do not remember but I have not been discourteous on this thread.

I didn't say I had reported you. Plenty of others quoted your deleted post as they found it offensive and wanted to disagree with you.

You say you haven't been discourteous but if that were true, MN wouldn't have deleted your post. I'm not going to engage with you further.

OK, I see. You're not able to engage with what I've said, only with the kind of thing you think someone with views like you think mine are from a casual misread of what I said maybe might have said.

Jagoda · 03/02/2024 13:04

Honestly OP, given the way this thread has deteriorated and brought forth a load of covert frothing racists, I would imagine you are even less likely to want to accede to your DH request...

Nicebloomers · 03/02/2024 13:05

Flag-shagging men give me the ick. It’s usually men. Something phallic about a flag pole perhaps?

whatistheworld · 03/02/2024 13:07

awful awful awful, please put your foot down!!!!

WhatWhereWho · 03/02/2024 13:07

Would he settle for Union Jack boxer shorts?
