DH and his flag pole dream….

1000 replies

Lilysienna1 · 02/02/2024 23:51

DH mentioned a few years ago, that he has ‘always wanted’ to have a flag on display in the front garden. A proper flag on a pole, that we would raise up every morning, and ‘fly at half mast’ when the occasion calls for it.

I have never ever even thought of having a flag. We are British and I know it’s quite common in America, but not so much here. DH isn’t a football fan, so it’s nothing to do with the flag flying we see during the World Cup and the like.

last year, for Christmas he said the only present he would wish for, was to have that flag. He was most disappointed with the watch and aftershave he received instead.

He has now mentioned it to 13 year old DD who thinks it’s ‘kinda cool’ and she could imagine using it behind her for tik tok dances.

So now, I’m being made out to be highly unreasonable and a bore, for saying I do not want to raise a bloody flag every morning and see it outside the front of my house every day. I did try to compromise by saying ‘maybe’ a small one in the back garden, but DH says it’s to go out the front only, and why should we be ashamed of patriotism.

We don’t live in a grand estate home, just a detached house in a redrow cul-de-sac. The neighbours wouldn’t be affected as there are large trees between our only neigbours drive and ours, and we are on the corner.

However, everyone that comes in and out our road will see it as it’s the first house.

what would you do?? Give in and say yes to DH and his flag pole or put your foot down? Am I really being that unreasonable and boring? Does anyone else fly a flag? 🤦🏻‍♀️

I think you should agree to it and say you'd like to fly a pride flag on there as well. I wonder what he would say to this.

How do you know he wouldn't be happy about that?.

Perfect example. Pathetic.

Thanks !

Brexit voter, bulldog tattoo and thinks there's too many foreigners here?

I voted to leave the EU. I would not fly a flag in my garden. Those two things do not go together. My DD, a Remain voter, has a tattoo, of a violet (grandmother's name), and I have never met a Brexiteer with a bulldog tattoo. I don't think too many foreigners are here, either.

Yes that was a homophobic post.

We are getting them all today. All the leftie bigoted do gooders that are actually racist and homophobic and hide behind virtue signalling their ‘inclusivity’ which is totally fake and insincere.

You absolutely did say to have ‘due regard’ for multicultural people and the dreadful things that were ‘done’ to them and the flag is used by ‘dreadful’ people to further their obnoxious views.

WTAF!!

Firstly not everyone with mixed heritage is a blob of people that have had ‘dreadful things’ happen to them, what a despicable and racist assumption!!!

Can you not see that???

Many of my Indian and Pakistani friends have very positive associations with Great Britain and the British flags.

Secondly you can not even assume that anyone of third generation is going to give a damn about a flag, your base assumption is of harm and it’s absolutely not the case for ‘multicultural’ communities that you have somehow lumped them together.

This might shock you, but in your efforts to appear holy than thou you have come across as very racist, and you will have absolutely offended all of my friends that absolutely do not see themselves as ‘victims’ at all!! You have given away your own inherent bias and racism by ASSUMING that anyone would want ‘due regard’ around bloody flags when this is THEIR country!! And these are THEIR flags.

For goodness sake please, please educate yourself!!

‘For goodness sake please, please educate yourself!!’

I think you need to calm down a little.

Talking about education, are you aware that racist organisations such as the EDL and individual racists have used the British and English flags when spreading their racist views? If not I hope this thread has educated you a bit.

The racist connotations of the flags are due to the racists and they have to take the responsibility for this.

I am wondering why you are quite so defensive about this.🤔

You're the one making assumptions. Who mentioned "everyone of mixed heritage"? Not me. Who mentioned "multicultural people"? Not me. "The blob" is in your imagination, not mine.

My due regard to dreadful things done to people under the Union flag is as much about British people split from their famiiles because of post-Brexit rules https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/tory-mp-politics-live-minimum-visa_uk_65ba5016e4b05c8779f71cae as it is about Windrush or our post-colonial legacy.

I talked about dreadful things that were done to people under that flag. By implication, if dreadful things weren't done to some people, then I'm not talking about those people. You're the one lumping everyone together.

I am deeply offended by the bigoted comments on here. My friends would be appalled to be lumped in with this on the basis of their heritage. It’s ‘othering’ can’t you see that?

The EDL are an irrelevance in this country, barely functioning thank goodness. Are we really going to give them our national flag to support their cause? Of course not.

The virtue signalling bigots on here clearly have a lot to learn!!

The Union Flag is the flag of the UK. If racists use it to promote racism it's up to the rest of us to remove that slur and take back the flag, not go on about how racists use it.

Universalsnail · 03/02/2024 12:37

Tbh I would say ok whatever but you are not flying it and it has to be a union jack or like a silly none political flag not a English flag due to the English flags unfortunate association with organisations like Britain First.

Life's too short for someone to not get to experience something they've always wanted.
I'd find it pretty embarrassing though 😂

IVFendomum · 03/02/2024 12:11

Started off reading this thread feeling very anti flag and judgemental but reading this post made me think again. This actually sounds quite nice.

It’s not for me personally but I also think it’s a bit of a shame the Union Jack has lots of negative connotations.

Strangely we also drive past a house where this happens. Can't be the same one as it's in a front garden. It fascinates me, not only what some of the less commonplace flags are and I do have to google them, but how much they all cost and how and where he, surely must be a he? stores them all. They all appear to be heavy duty Grade A flags.

It's fairly unusual go to past and not see a flag but it is unusual to see the Union flag or the 'home' nations' ones. It must be a really dedicated hobby because the commitment is pretty huge. I think it has a real charm, but flying a single flag, not my thing at all.

Newchapterbeckons · 03/02/2024 12:38

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 03/02/2024 12:34

But they’ve hijacked it.

Maybe on your estate! But the EDL have not hijacked the flag here or in London or thousands of other places.

I am staggered that you think your small corner of the world is reflective of everywhere and everyone thinks like you. They really don’t.

Stop contaminating everything with your negativity.

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 03/02/2024 12:38

Just go the whole hog and let him have his flag,, then he can build a crows nest on the chimney and fire a cannon every day at noon.

I must say I’d find a scout leading coin collecting flagpole ferret deeply unsexy, but that’s just me.

Exactly!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

It’s our flag not theirs, and it’s all of ours regardless of heritage.

OK, if you're going to resort to lying, I'll have to report your post.

I categorically did not use the phrase multi-cultural people (as a singular or a plural!) except when quoting you.

You should be reflecting on what you've read and how it differs from what you think you've read. They are not the same.

I disagree. In the current climate, I find it inflammatory with the potential to increase racial tensions.

Having said that, of course it is not illegal to fly the flag. People like you and others are more than able to fly the flags should you wish. So it’s all good! But people are also allowed to have opinions and reactions about it.

Stop engaging with me. You can not make sweeping assumptions lumping people as ‘multicultural’ and expect not to be pulled up on it!

Your posts are ‘othering’ by assuming that anyone from a ‘multicultural’ background as you put it, would not see the British flag as their own.

Do you get it now? Or do I have to keep explaining to you why it is othering.

Many communities absolutely see the British flag as their own. If you still don’t understand this, I really can’t help you.

Some unconscious bias training would help.
