Desk and office given away

I am due to return to work following maternity leave next month. I am anxious about going back but this has been further intensified by the fact my office has been given away during my time off. This has been my office for 5 years. Not only has it been given away permanently but I have not been allocated another office or even a desk. I only became aware of this because some colleagues alerted me to it and I then contacted my manager to discuss it.

She is off site and very hands off so we rarely see her if at all. In fact I have never met her. So had I not been given this heads up by my colleagues I would have been coming into work to see my office and desk occupied and no place for me to sit on my first day back.

I am part of a multidisciplinary team and I manage one of the departments. Therefore having my own desk and office is so important to supervise staff and the nature of our work is very sensitive so privacy is a vital. But at this stage I'd settle for a desk of my own.

I am having a meeting with my manager about this very soon and have found out she has invited 2 very senior managers along also which is intimidating and not helpful to the anxiety I am experiencing. I think she fears I will be very unhappy and so has her reinforcements ready to tell me tough sh1t.

Her solution so far has been that they'll slot me into a desk somewhere when other staff are off....ie hot desking.

AIBU that I am so upset about this and want to fight for a resolution? Any advice from anyone who has been in a similar situation would be much appreciated.

Thank you 😊

Did the manager explicitly say she "thought about what [you] said"? Or had a different office already been identified, but you don't want to lose face here by admitting you'd jumped the gun based on remarks from colleagues who didn't know the plan?

There's always one 😒 Yes she said she thought about my concerns and realised that hot desking would not work considering my role.

Remember this is my first time meeting this manager in my 5 years in this role, so she has never been proactive or supportive in any capacity.

In fact she told me she moved this lady into my room and quote 'totally forgot about it until you emailed about not having a desk space'.

So as I suspected I'd have returned from mat leave to my room occupied and no desk.

@Proseccoprincess33

Glad the meeting went well and that your manager has had second thoughts and saw the situation as it really was. A shame you had to go through this in the first place but great to have such a positive ending. 🌹

Thank you 😀

I am happy to read about the positive resolution of this and I seriously hope HR 'experts' on this thread like @RosesAndHellebores came back to read the update and maybe learned that you can prioritise actual people being in the role, and that it is not just about finding solutiuons how to screw people over to maximise profit for the higher management.

Absolutely 👏👏👏 thank you 😊

Hello all, I am happy to report that the meeting went well. My manager had thought about what I had said and has done some shuffling about and has secured myself and the woman I'll be job sharing with an office space to ourselves.

So it has thankfully ended well and I am actually looking forward to returning to work now. Thank you all for your insight and support. It was and is very much appreciated 😃

I hope this post helps anyone that's in a similar situation to realise that they are NOT being unreasonable and gives them the confidence to challenge any unfair decision making in the work place xx

Miraculously resolved 😂 Very pleased to hear it. Hope you're settling back in okay!

Somewhat....the reshuffle has caused issue as the other disciplines within the team have new staff starting and are starting to get v annoyed that the other office is still occupied.

When at full capacity there isn't even the option to hot desk. So we really do need it back to be able to house all the staff in our team. So the saga continues but I am more confident we will find a resolution...I think 🤣 The whole team are unhappy and there's a good arguement to have those desks back, so time will tell.
