Asking employer to cover childcare costs

I’ve been asked to go on a business trip for a week, is it unreasonable to ask the company to pay the incremental childcare costs?

Well done! I think it's entirely unreasonable of any employer to expect an employee to go to a distant country (especially one where hardship payments might be paid to expats) for 10 days without paying something extra. Presumably you will be working many additional hours to your normal ones and have to suffer all sorts of inconveniences on top of the difficulties with wraparound child care. I'm glad your employer had recognised this and coughed up. I don't think anyone should just see this kind of travel as 'normal' unless they work for a travel agent or the military or some such. Enjoy your trip!

Kp987 · 03/02/2024 22:05

Are you for real? Why take a job with potential travel then? No the company is not obliged to pay your child care. Suck it up and get on with your job. Or be a stay at home mum. Your decision! I am a single mum who juggles this and would never dream of asking for child care costs. It was my decision to be a mum

NolaG · 03/02/2024 23:24

Of course you are being unreasonable…it is part of your contract to “travel as required” - you chose to have children - if you couldn’t take a job where you need to travel as required because you have children then you shouldn’t have taken it…your husband should pick up and drop off his own son - he too chose to have children.

I am fed up of getting notifications for this thread.

THE OP NOT ONLY GOT HER CHILDCARE PAID FOR (AS SHE SHOULD) SHE GOT EXTRA PAY FOR HER TEN DAY TRIP

boozeclues · 04/02/2024 06:15

All the people who are saying yabu either don’t work or have shitty jobs and shitty employers.

I as a senior manger and a person employed would expect much more from my employer and would absolutely facilitate a request like the OPs

Nope. Try again.

As above.

I'm a manager. I'm a woman. I have a family. I'm a feminist. My family live in a different country.

The OP is still U. And absurd requests like hers for special treatment could be setting back women, and mothers in particular, decades.

Absolutely they should pay the childcare costs.
With my employer, if a part time employee had to work full time to attend training because that was the only way it could be delivered their extra childcare would be paid this is no different.
Even if it says in your contract that you are expected to travel and work extra hours they are still liable to pay you for those hours and travel expenses.
They are asking you to be away from home for a week which means that you are not available to collect your children at the usual time. You shouldn't be out of pocket because of extra hours that your employer is asking you to do.

Firstly, it varies between sectors. When I travel I don't get paid for the extra hours I work or for travel time but it's expected that I take that time back as TOIL. We have a specific policy for that and we don't offer overtime payments.

Secondly, what constitutes as 'expenses' will vary. For some sectors people are paid a daily rate whereas for others there are strict limits on what you can claim and how much you can claim. We have a limit for meals and you can claim up to that limit but not over. And you can't claim for alcohol. Travel and hotels are booked by our finance team and again there are rules around that.

In my organisation (and probably sector) childcare isn't something that we could claim on expenses.

What country do you line in? This is an outrageous expectation for a U.K. employer

@EarringsandLipstick well that sense of entitlement you hate so much has just earnt me an additional 2.5k

So you earn £2.5k a day? And you’re complaining about £300 childcare costs?

Come on, the extra day pay didn’t happen, or you’re bullshiting about getting that much.

Both my spouse and I have to travel for work from time to time (and in description of job that travel may be needed). Both of us have times where we adamantly feel the travel is not needed, and may push back on need. But employer does often disagree.

I cover when my spouse travels. My spouse covers when I travel. It may require additional childcare, but I would never expect my employer to pay it. It may also mean taking more time off work if child is sick while one parent is traveling.

We do coordinate travel and will refuse trips with overlapping schedules. Overnight childcare is not something we are willing to do and no family close. Although have had cases of international travel w less than 24 hrs in-between, which is stressful due to potential delays etc.

If your job requires travel (and sounds like you have avoided this for the most part) it is part of the job and requires figuring out how to manage childcare just like the rest of your job.

How has this earned you an additional 2.5k?

Because she's getting paid £250 per day above her normal salary..
Because she had the temerity to ask for extra pay to cover costs...

No, an employer should not have to pay for your life choices, as in having children.

Not their circus, not their clowns.🙄

Because they want to? 🤷‍♀️

Because they value their employee? Because they're already forking out £££££? Because others have asked for it and it's no big deal? 🤷‍♀️

WGAF why?
