ID for buying calpol?

Lovelyjubbbly · 31/01/2024 16:15

I was in Morrisons this morning grabbing some shopping and a bottle of calpol for my son who is not well.

I got ID for one bottle of calpol as she said she needed proof I was old enough I’m 30!!!
is there really any need for this pritty obvious I’m not 16 , 18 or even 21.

so what happens if a younger person has a child early at 16 or 18? And have limited family who can get them it if there child is ill?
surely this needs looked at.

I could see the point if i was buying 2 or even 3 bottles but I done my normal shop plus one bottle of medicine!

absolutely livid. So I currently left Morrisons with no medicine for my son I’m I AIBU for been annoyed?

The government is consulting at the moment - here is your chance to express your views. I hope more people will respond and say how silly these rules are and that retailers have to train their staff properly:

Alcohol licensing: age verification

Consultation on age verification in connection with alcohol sales.

lieselotte · 31/01/2024 16:18

Oh and by the way you'll get told you are being unreasonable because poor staff etc.

Nobody has ever, in the history of retail, been punished for selling Calpol to an obvious adult.

CunkEverywhereOnEverything · 31/01/2024 16:24

It contains paracetamol and you
need to be 16 to purchase paracetamol. Most companies have a challenge 25/think 25 policy- if the customer looks under 25 you need to ID them. People have different ideas of what “under 25” looks like. It’s not personal against the customer, it’s the law. Take it as a compliment or something.

Mothership4two · 31/01/2024 16:29

So you had to leave empty handed? How OTT

I posted on here last year when my 25 yo son was ID checked for just standing near me when I put wine through the tills with my shopping (not Morrisons). He had to run out to the car as fortunately had brought it with him. It was pretty obvious that it wasn't for nefarious reasons

Sapphire387 · 31/01/2024 16:31

I agree, OP. That is ludicrous. A sick child needing medicine and it's refused for that reason? The law needs to change.

Howdoidoit100 · 31/01/2024 16:32

I was also asked to provide ID at co-op for calpol when I was in my 30s. My child was in the pushchair. Luckily I had my driving licence.

Brefugee · 31/01/2024 16:34

as i say on the alcohol threads too: in a country without mandated government ID it is batshit to pull stunts like this.

and the "think 25" campaign? yeah. If you are 30 you don't look too young to buy alcohol. again, batshit.

So if you are a mum under 25 you can't buy certain medicines for your own child (or yourself)? How silly

HermioneWeasley · 31/01/2024 16:35

It’s an age restricted product and all retailers operate a challenge 25 policy. They obviously thought you looked 25 or younger.

if you’re a 16 year old parent who wants to buy calpol then you need to take proof of age when you buy it.

justasoul · 31/01/2024 16:36

When I worked in a shop, the rule was that once you ask for ID you can’t take it back. I’m not sure if it’s rule just for the shop I worked in. Truth is, you have a split second to make a decision and maybe on a second look, yes, it might be obvious that you’re an adult but once asked that was it.

lola8345 · 31/01/2024 16:40

Yes it's crazy, I got asked for ID in my forties....I totally lost my shit! I had two teenage children with me, and absolutely do not look under 25. I may have ranted at the 16 year old twit for quite a while before I insisted she put my purchase through. (she did, I doubt she was even old enough to sell booze)

Common sense people. If I had been blocked from Calpol with a sick child...goodness me, say a prayer for that idiot!

Paracetamol is not an age restricted product. In fact no medicines are age restricted.

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 31/01/2024 16:42

I had kids younger and didn't have ID (stupidly). I got asked a couple of times while my kids were with me.

It’s not age restricted at all. It’s individual retailers making up their own policies. There’s no statutory or licensing requirements all, unlike alcohol or tobacco sales.

Lovelyjubbbly · 31/01/2024 16:45

I am still livid! It’s ridiculous my son is ill in the house and couldn’t manage to get him what he needed?

but I went to my local boots just not far down the road and got it no problem no hesitation?

I did lose my sh*t lol! But I did apologise after it’s just frustrating she knew bloody fine well I wasn’t the age they needed to ask for.

the law definitely needs changed feel sorry for these younger mums and dads who actually are going to get these things for the poor children and are told no

@Mothership4two under 25s can buy Calpol. Challenge 25 is if they think you look under 25 they ID you. It's because some teenagers look like they're in their 20s (like Luke the darts player)

in UK you are not required to carry ID. And indeed many people don't have any. so either you introduce ID cards, or you find another way to exercise your need for batshit rules (like school uniform) 😁

lazyarse123 · 31/01/2024 16:50

Nice to call retail staff names, especially youngsters. I work in a shop and it's drilled into us to do this shit. We really don't enjoy dealing with customers who think we're making it up and just generally being wankers for the sake of it. We're really not.

puncheur · 31/01/2024 16:51

@Lovelyjubbbly what law do you think needs changing? There is no law to change. The law says anyone of any age can buy medicines. Individual shops are free to make up their own rules (although it could be argued that if they bring in arbitrary restrictions based on a protected characteristic such as age then that might be a breach of the Equality Act).

But you, or rather your employer, really are making it up. That’s why people get angry.

Well exactly. Why "lose your shit" at the cashier who is only doing what they've been told? And please don't say we're jobsworths. We are repeatedly told we could be sacked although at my age I know that's unlikely because the customers are usually the required age. But I'm old enough and experienced enough to use my common sense. Not everyone is.

Denimdenimdenim · 31/01/2024 17:00

That is madness.

lola8345 · 31/01/2024 17:18

if you can't tell the difference between an 18 year old or a 45 year old women...you shouldn't be checking ID! Jesus no 45 year old women looks 35, certainly not 25.

Yes, I'll loose my shit, it's stupid, and I have no filters when it come to stupid. 27 years over legal age... yes I'll pull you up.

Mothership4two · 31/01/2024 17:19

I think he looks about 40 @NerrSnerr! Which is kind of proving their point I suppose.

I didn't realise that there weren't legal age restrictions for buying medicines - just assumed there would be. Morrisons policy is over 18, but OP said she clearly doesn't look that age. And it was Calpol! Common sense should be used.

When DS was challenged it was clearly my shopping, which I was packing and I am in my 50s. He could have waited in the car but decided to come in. It was a few bottles of decent wine not cheap party booze. DS looks mature for his age. Again common sense should have been applied. It was a fluke that he had his drving license with him.
