ID for buying calpol?

Lovelyjubbbly · 31/01/2024 16:15

I was in Morrisons this morning grabbing some shopping and a bottle of calpol for my son who is not well.

I got ID for one bottle of calpol as she said she needed proof I was old enough I’m 30!!!
is there really any need for this pritty obvious I’m not 16 , 18 or even 21.

so what happens if a younger person has a child early at 16 or 18? And have limited family who can get them it if there child is ill?
surely this needs looked at.

I could see the point if i was buying 2 or even 3 bottles but I done my normal shop plus one bottle of medicine!

absolutely livid. So I currently left Morrisons with no medicine for my son I’m I AIBU for been annoyed?

I don't understand why you wouldn't just show some ID and get the Calpol you needed for your child? If anyone should be annoyed it should be your child because of the decision you chose to make.

At the age of 30, I din't think I needed id. So I didn't carry it. That's why. Going home without essential medicine, because someone can't recognise an adult???

that's not OK.

Mothership4two · 31/01/2024 17:23

Presumably because she didn't have it on her @Jijithecat? Wasn't really her decision, she probably didn't take any because she didn't think at 30 she'd need it to buy a child's medicine

malmi · 31/01/2024 17:24

If you're lucky enough to appear under 25, expect to be asked for ID when buying age restricted products. It's the industry standard to restrict paracetamol sales to 16 and under. It's been that way for years. Frustrating to not be able to buy it when you need it but next time you'll take ID. Also worth keeping a stock of Calpol in the house so you're not in a panic needing to get some when a child needs it.

Mothership4two · 31/01/2024 17:25

I think OP would have worked that one out for herself!

Jijithecat · 31/01/2024 17:26

Shops don't have to serve you and if you don't like it, don't use those shops.
Abusing retail staff is unacceptable and that little in store protest changed nothing whatsoever, just left everyone feeling unnecessarily bad.

Superscientist · 31/01/2024 17:30

I once got idd buying schloer like drink. When I pointed it out that it wasn't alcoholic so wasn't an age restricted product the cashier was very apologetic. I'm mid 30s and still get idd routinely although never for paracetamol but for everything else and I've been buying paracetamol since I was 14. The people in the pharmacy do know my name's and have my dob on prescriptions so that might help!

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 31/01/2024 17:31

Paracetamol / ibuprofen products now have an 16 age limit and a challenge 25 policy on them which I think is nuts. Many young girls start their periods by age 13, as a teen who suffered horrifically if I ran out of pain killers I could just pop and get some more on my way to or from school or out and about now you need a parent to go for you. Back in my day (I’m not that old either) you used to just keep stuff like that in your bag and use it as needed now kids aren’t allowed to take their own meds and have to see a school nurse. Its bloody ridiculous.

ALongHardWinter · 31/01/2024 17:31

I think this rule is crazy. My DD (who is 40) regularly gets asked for ID when she buys alcohol, paracetamol etc. Drives her mad.

KreedKafer · 31/01/2024 17:32

Yes, usually I sympathise with the staff in these situations, but applying a 'Think 25' policy for a bottle of Calpol purchased along with groceries is just absurd.

In a country with compulsory ID cards, it wouldn't matter because everyone would always have ID on them anyway, but lots of adults don't have photo ID and if they do, it's their passport which they understandably do not routinely carry around with them.

lola8345 · 31/01/2024 17:37

@Jijithecat If that's aimed at me, the protest worked very well, the 45 year old women left with her wine. Which was appropriate.(and legal) I was 27 years above legal age.
I'm older now and would argue in a heartbeat. if your'e not smart enough to identify someone two decades over legal age...you should be shelf stocking.

Obviously no idea what ID the OP has - but unless someone has a photo driving licence that they keep in their wallet/purse, or routinely carries their passport everywhere, what official photo ID with a date of birth on it do you think they might be carrying?

How many people in their 30s are going to have shelled out £15 for a sodding PASS card so they can buy Calpol for their children?

ItIsLobstersAllTheWayDown · 31/01/2024 17:38

Someone else may have already said it but the phrase "if you're lucky enough to appear under 25" is itself extremely ageist. What, exactly, makes it "lucky" to be or look under 25, eh?

This phrasing of the 'Think 25' policy should be consigned to the dustbin labelled NONSENSE.

I was told the other day told that people legally have to be over 18 to buy paracetomol, and the shopkeeper wasn't happy when I politely tried to explain that this was incorrect, after I overheard someone (with ID) being denied it.

Being allowed as a shopkeeper to denying anyone over the age of 16 (who is legally entitled to make their own healthcare decisions) access to medicines, on the basis of age specifically, is a situation that shouldn't have been allowed in the general 'creep'.

Off to fill in the consultation.

Mothership4two · 31/01/2024 17:39

It tends to be shop policy to age check non alcohol wines like Nozecco @Superscientist to stop mistakes and pubs may do it too - but it's happened to me and yes it seems nuts

Jijithecat · 31/01/2024 17:41

@lola8345 I was responding to the OP because it's their thread. Had I been responding to you i would have tagged you in. If you want to start your own thread you can.

It being a glass bottle seemed to throw her. It was sparkling elderflower cordial so not like it was particularly marketed as no/low alcohol.

One's that want to buy products that are actually age restricted.
I've said it once and I'll say it again. Shops don't have to serve you. If you don't like their policies don't shop there.

AffIt · 31/01/2024 17:46

Challenge 25 is a fucking ridiculous policy that has been inappropriately used to put the fear of God into NMW till assistants with very little power or autonomy, and does little more than rile people up (and I sat that as somebody who used to work in the wine trade and is very familiar with the law).

lola8345 · 31/01/2024 17:46

@Jijithecat Op never said she abused staff?? Have to say at the age of 30..I would have. Calpol is not an abuse product, it's necessary for children. Failing to provide necessary medicine because the 30 year old doesn't look 16? Leaving a child sick and in pain.

Have a look at yourself.

mitogoshi · 31/01/2024 17:47

To those saying that paracetamol shouldn't be age restricted - tell that to the parents of the youngsters who deliberately od on it. Yes calpol has been used alas. Horrible situation

AffIt · 31/01/2024 17:49

And to agree with a PP's point - as we do not live a country in which it is mandatory to carry state-issued photographic ID by law, it makes the whole thing doubly nonsensical.

What does "I did lose my shit lol' mean to you if not abuse?

lola8345 · 31/01/2024 17:52

@mitogoshi

paracetamol has been restricted for years, If I wanted to OD. I. would just visit several pharmacies/supermarkets. Same with Calpol.

Restricting purchase will never stop an overdose.

Ignorant argument.

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 31/01/2024 17:55

CunkEverywhereOnEverything · 31/01/2024 16:24

It contains paracetamol and you
need to be 16 to purchase paracetamol. Most companies have a challenge 25/think 25 policy- if the customer looks under 25 you need to ID them. People have different ideas of what “under 25” looks like. It’s not personal against the customer, it’s the law. Take it as a compliment or something.

This is true!
The company I used to work for followed their own policy! Which was basically a young-middle-old challenge. If you thought the customer was in the young or middle category then you had to ID check to be on the safe side. Unless the customer was clearly in the old category (ie - grey/white hair pretty much) you had to ID. They followed like a 'challenge 40' policy. It was ridiculous and the staff felt stupid in having to ask, esp considering not many 40 year olds would carry ID most the times.. especially non-drivers who are not going to walk round with their passports everyday. We had a lot of kick back from it, understandably 😩
