ID for buying calpol?

Lovelyjubbbly · 31/01/2024 16:15

I was in Morrisons this morning grabbing some shopping and a bottle of calpol for my son who is not well.

I got ID for one bottle of calpol as she said she needed proof I was old enough I’m 30!!!
is there really any need for this pritty obvious I’m not 16 , 18 or even 21.

so what happens if a younger person has a child early at 16 or 18? And have limited family who can get them it if there child is ill?
surely this needs looked at.

I could see the point if i was buying 2 or even 3 bottles but I done my normal shop plus one bottle of medicine!

absolutely livid. So I currently left Morrisons with no medicine for my son I’m I AIBU for been annoyed?

It's a daft policy and I understand your stress when you're rushing back to a sick child. But 'losing your shit' with someone for doing their job is unacceptable- it's good you apologised, but I still wouldn't want you allowed back in if I worked there. I really think its time for zero tolerance policies to be enforced for abuse against retail staff.

Prinnymio · 01/02/2024 10:15

im gonna chime in as someone who works in a shop. our tills block purchases without id. we have to follow what the till says and there is cctv above us. if we get caught not following this we can lose our jobs. and honestly my job is worth more to me than your sick child. your not going to pay my bills if i get fired. so yeh id rather you had to go elsewhere to buy your calpol if you cant prove your age. i get its frustrating but also not staffs problem if you dont have id. the whole Think 25 is because sometimes you just cant tell with people.

Glitterblue · 01/02/2024 10:22

I was thinking about this the other day when I was buying some Panadol in Tesco - it came up on the self check out thing saying Challenge 25. I was thinking how stupid it is that I had a mortgage, was working full time and was engaged at 22 and wouldn’t have been able to buy a packet of paracetamol in Tesco!

beanii · 01/02/2024 10:33

You have to look over 25. The employee is purely doing his/her job - if they get it wrong, THEY (the employee) get fined.

Look up challenge 25.

celticprincess · 01/02/2024 10:34

There’s a few things that are age restricted that I hadn’t realised. Using the self serve tills means I always get the amber light for things like calpol, but not all medicines. My daughter was buying some bits in home bargains for secret Santa when she was 13. She wasn’t allowed to buy some false nails as they’re age restricted due to the glue. She was fine, she handed them over and paid for her other thing. But I didn’t even know they were restricted. Again at Xmas I got amber lighted for my Xmas crackers. To be age verified. For many it’s 16. It’s not that you don’t look 26 but that you might not look 25+. 25 is a far cry from 16 though for those products. I agree they 16 year olds should be given ID cards. I know you can buy some but why should you have to. And these might be for 18. And yes there are many young mothers.

stayathomer · 01/02/2024 10:37

Don’t sell calpol but we did sell lottery and they send corporate secret shoppers in to catch people out. Retail workers can’t chance it, especially if there’s a manager who’s said there’s a chance someone could pop in! But I do get why you’re pissed off too!

Samlewis96 · 01/02/2024 10:47

I got asked for I'd to buy calpol at asda self scan. I'm 52 and was buying for my grandson Left it there ( along with rest of my shopping ) and went to sainsbury instead

HawkeyePierce · 01/02/2024 10:55

It’s probably a challenge 25 product. The cashiers can get into serious trouble if they get it wrong, and get fined personally. If your kid needs the calpol that much, show your ID and get on with your day. Definitely YABU in my eyes

MamPadi · 01/02/2024 11:14

Sorry but there's a policy and most places you have to be over 16 to buy calpol, with good reason really as paracetamol overdose can be fatal.
The store worker were only doing their job, they probably have a "look 25" policy, take it as a compliment!
I used to get IDd quite often until I was in my late 30s (42 now), used to make my day Grin

Northernladdette · 01/02/2024 11:32

In our local Savers a woman got refused calpol as her son carried it to the till and put it on the counter. I kid you not …..

“Show your ID”. This is the U.K. we don’t have ID. Most people don’t carry their passport or drivers licence (if they even have one) everywhere they go with them. And no one expects to be asked to show Id for stuff like medicines, for which there Is no legal age limit to purchase.

malmi · 01/02/2024 12:01

That's not true. Everyone on this thread now knows that paracetamol is subject to Challenge 25.

Asda has a good article summarising their age restriction policies: https://asda-stores.custhelp.com/app/answers/detailgrow/aa_id/2157/~/age-restricted-sales

There are other products that would be legal to sell but the industry standard is to restrict, like energy drinks. Let's all educate ourselves so we don't end up "losing our shit" over a can of Red Bull 👍

fliptopbin · 01/02/2024 12:04

Another one from my local Morrisons (the same one as the postman story), is claiming that an Irish passport was not suitable ID! I'm sure that the official policy is not Challenge 25 (and no foreigners), and I am more guessing that since this was a small rural corner shop that Morrisons has just taken over, it was probably that the cashier had never seen one before!

Noglitterallowed · 01/02/2024 12:10

The assistant didn’t make the rules they have it drummed into them and it automatically pops up on the till. Losing your shit with her was bang out of order

Noglitterallowed · 01/02/2024 12:13

When I worked in retail we had to go and do an online course and test to make sure we knew aswel all the ages. Some are very surprising but they do then send in secret shoppers - our manager actually got caught out and did get in serious trouble so being rude to someone that’s just doing their job isn’t on

lola8345 · 31/01/2024 17:18

if you can't tell the difference between an 18 year old or a 45 year old women...you shouldn't be checking ID! Jesus no 45 year old women looks 35, certainly not 25.

Yes, I'll loose my shit, it's stupid, and I have no filters when it come to stupid. 27 years over legal age... yes I'll pull you up.

I got asked not that long ago when buying pain killers in Tesco - I’m nearly 50! I generally have my driving license on me so don’t really mind, just take it as a compliment. It is a bit bonkers though.

lieselotte · 01/02/2024 12:59

As I knew would happen, people on this thread are confusing the law with policy.

Nobody can be fined for selling the OP Calpol. With or without ID.

When I am Queen I am going to sort out this problem. I'd also do away with the whole proxy sale nonsense as well. And require all staff selling age restricted products to be over 18 so you don't have to hang around while they ask for a transaction to be approved.

Abbyant · 01/02/2024 12:59

I’m 30 and I’ve found the chemist is the only place that doesn’t id me for when I buy medicine. I had my two kids hanging off me last week and got ask for id for an energy drink it’s a pain in the butt.

And that also betrays a massive lack of training too. Energy drinks are not alcohol, proxy sales don't apply, they don't need ID from someone who is very obviously over 18 (16?).

Think 25 shouldn't apply to products which have an age of 16 and are part of a voluntary code.

I wonder what they'll do if the tobacco age is raised to 21? Ask everyone under 40 to show ID?

lieselotte · 01/02/2024 13:06

At my local Waitrose I went to the cigarette counter to buy a bottle of wine because I assumed the person on the desk would be over 18. Nope she was 16 (maybe 17). "Well I can sell lottery tickets" she said (this was before the age was raised to 18).

Why would you put someone under 18 on the cigarette counter. When I complained they really couldn't see what my issue was.

Last week I was buying a bottle of wine so went to a manned checkout - I then realised there was a young lad on it. I was thinking please be over 18. He obviously was as the transaction went through fine.

But on a separate note, it turned into a "kerfuffle" queue as the person in front of me needed a new packet of something as it was leaking! So I had to hang around regardless. And the person behind me chose the queue because I only had a couple of things and it would be quick Grin

Netflixmad · 01/02/2024 13:09

A huge over reaction on your part.

fliptopbin · 01/02/2024 13:47

Well I was discussing this with my husband, and he told me that he went to our local village Morrisons last week (the one that didn't accept Irish passports as ID), and he was refused alcohol because the manager was"busy", and there was nobody over 18 on the shop floor, so no Challenge 25 products could be sold!
This has all happened since Morrisons Daily took over the store, but I now realise that this is an incompetent manager issue, rather than any policy thing.

SalviaDivinorum · 01/02/2024 17:38

just take it as a compliment...

It really isn't a compliment, you know.

If the OP was underage, the cashier could be fined!

Yes and isn't that ridiculous because as has been clarified multiple times there is no actual age restriction in law for the sale of calpol.

It's the shops own bonkers policy and makes about as much sense as applying challenge 25 on the sale of shoes because you might hang yourself with the laces...
