I've had a thread on here before about this and found it really useful as there's no one in real life who doesn't look at me in horror if I even mention this.
You know how people have SAD when the nights draw in , I have it the other way round. This morning, the birdsong by me set me off. Its like a sense of dread. I think it's to do with change. I don't cope well with change generally, I have anxiety made worse by peri menopause so I think moving from something you know well and feel happy with (the dark nights) into something new makes me feel a bit unsettled . Are you the same? Want to chat about it?

What's your AIBU OP?

Why do so many posters put chat topics in AIBU?

Also, bring on the Spring, looking forward to getting in the garden again!

Cos it's more active than other boards

This is today's weather, and this kind of weather really gets me down, regardless of the season.
I can do cold, but I hate dull, miserable weather. Having not great eyesight doesn't help.

Suicide peaks in spring. Most folk are happy, making plans for summer but for others it's just a reminder that they are stuck in a pit.

BrainInAJar · 29/01/2024 13:59

Also spring reminds me of exams.

ouch321 · 29/01/2024 14:06

I imagine that spring is the least disliked season of all.

Many people hate winter due to the lack of daylight and the temps when it drops below zero which it has quite a bit this winter.

Many hate summer because it's disgusting and sweaty.

Many hate autumn because that's when the 'monsters' come out for breeding.

But there's nothing bad I can think of that people say about spring.

Not disputing that you don't like it but I'd bet it would come top in a favourite season poll.

Marchintospring · 29/01/2024 14:07

I totally get what you mean about change. For me its the sodding expectation of it all in Spring. The change in weather ( takes forever) , fresh start, the spring cleaning, the bikini bodies for summer. Everyone seems to be so busy but its still not really warm or light enough for me.
There's half term which is the most pointless of all the school holidays and Easter which is busy and expensive if you want to do anything or go away.

I like January because its quiet and no one but me seems to like it ( I have a birthday and go away on the cheap somewhere nice every year). After that it all goes a bit downhill.
I do love the easiness of summer so I just hope for a hot April and pretend its not Spring.

Really! That made me feel better about being so depressed - it's not me, it's Spring!

And yeah, the feeling of stuckness is real.

GoosieLucie · 29/01/2024 14:16

I feel the same about Christmas! For me, the prospect of Christmas looming up ahead (and its obligations to buy presents, send cards, write letters, be happy and jolly etc) really spoils any enjoyment I might get from the beauty of the autumn days. Maybe it's because Christmas usually coincides with the darkest and dreariest days.

Once December is out of the way, I feel so much more positive. I actually really like January! I have the "thank God Christmas is over" feeling and the prospect of spring being just over the horizon.

@RampantIvy “Where does everyone live where May and October are hot?
Is everyone from London and the South East on this thread?”

This did make me laugh. Nope, not everyone is from London and the SE but many millions of people live here😂 It’s 15 degrees here today. I was too warm to wear a coat on my walk into the village. It’ll be chilly again in an hour or so, but still. It’s pretty mild here today. I genuinely think about moving north just for the weather!

ComeAlongPeggy · 29/01/2024 14:22

@GoosieLucie I never understood people who didn’t like Christmas and I’m so much more sympathetic now. It can be such a tough time of year for so many reasons.

9 degrees here with a yellow rain warning and very low light levels as per my photo which I took out of the bedroom window.

ComeAlongPeggy · 29/01/2024 14:30

@RampantIvy See, thats january weather in my book. Feels really spring like here today. It's forecast to get cold again. But January days where I don't need a coat and the sun is warm on my face feel so strange. Most people like that feeling of the first warm rays of sun. I get that. I can appreciate that it feels quite nice but it also signifies the roll towards bloody summer which I dislike so much. A few years ago we had high 30's/early 40's for a very long time and I felt so trapped and almost panicky. I don't feel at all bothered by the -10 degree cold snap we had last year, or snow, rain, hail, fog etc. Cold crisp days are the best though.

SerafinasGoose · 29/01/2024 14:33

I 'get' it. My least favoured months are November and December (including Christmas): I start to feel better in January, especially toward the end when the days start to draw out more. (This year, however, for some reason January has felt interminable). I like the changing seasons and do find Autumn a pleasant time of year; it's the shorter days and early darkness I can't get enthusiastic about.

But if I feel that way about autumn then it's no great stretch of the imagination that others will feel the same way about spring. Not quite computing the gratuitous offence taken by some people simply because others are different, make different choices, or have preferences which are different from theirs. Is this myopia recent? It seems to be worse recently.

I try to find things about the seasons I struggle with that I do like. The healing darkness, and the fact that the time of year can make fewer demands. My lovely wood burner, and proper stargazing. I'll always love spring best, but solidarity and empathy to those who are feeling now what I felt in November!

SerafinasGoose · 29/01/2024 14:35

NB. late, blowzy summer isn't a season I dislike particularly, but it's spoiled for me by the wasps. I'm positively phobic about them. One really good thing about November is that the evil buzzy little shits have all died off, and I can actually start to wear scented products again without attracting them. Bleurgh!

This is exactly how November weather usually looks - perhaps that's why I'm finding January unusually hard this year (been ill for weeks over Christmas which didn't help).

Grey, dank dampness, and whole days of perpetual twilight when it never seems to get properly light, are the worst!

Morecatsarebetter · 29/01/2024 14:57

I love it when it gets dark at 3.30-ish. Lovely and peaceful. As soon as the clocks go forward in March out come all the kids to trash where I live

Bookist · 29/01/2024 15:00

This is me.

I would be very happy for it to be permanently Autumn and Winter. I love closing the curtains against the dark nights, lighting candles and getting cosy. I love a bright but frosty morning and I love a chilly, rainy day. I deliberately keep our bedroom cold because we have a thick, goose down duvet and brushed cotton bedding. It's bliss.

I actively dislike strong sunshine and temperatures over 20 degrees. I rarely sunbathe because it's dull and uncomfortable. I hate feeling sweaty and unclean, it actually makes me stressed. I hate biting insects because they make a bee-line for me and I have Skeeter Syndrome so any bites really swell up and become inflamed.

Even though I never put my face in the sun, I still get stressed that the strong sunshine is damaging my skin because I just cannot tolerate any sunscreen on my face.

JaneyGee · 29/01/2024 15:14

Not spring, no, but I AM dreading the summer. Well, I’m dreading the heat. I seem to be hyper-sensitive to it. I would rather put up with anything - snow, rain, storms, flooding…anything but the heat. To make it worse, rural Essex (where I live) is unbearably crowded, with new housing estates appearing everywhere. The traffic is now so bad I hardly bother going out. For an introvert like me, the combination of heat, traffic and overcrowding is torture.

MooseBreath · 29/01/2024 15:19

I hate spring. It's cold, but not cold enough to wear consistent jumpers and coats. It's wet and muddy, so coming home from a walk with the dog and kids is always a mess. The pollen starts, so guaranteed my hayfever will act up. The only decent holiday is Easter, but with the weather likely to be miserable and prices everywhere jacked up for the school break, it's not worth the money to go away. It's brighter in the mornings, so the kids won't sleep in past 6 anymore, but it's not warm enough outside to enjoy the lighter evening outside. The bastard time change will destroy any semblance of routine on our house.

Spring sucks.

Do you have good eyesight? I really struggle in low light levels because I have rubbish eyesight - thank you measles.

Those of you who prefer to shut the world out - would you say you are introverts?

No I have absolutely terrible eyesight!

I wouldn't say I'm an introvert either. I do sometimes wonder though if my hatred of spring is somehow tied up with lack of confidence. Not sure how to articulate it but I've always felt this way for as long as I can remember.

I get that people are different and many people have a preferred season. I get that some people don’t like change. What I’m struggling with here is that it’s nowhere near Spring - it’s fucking January!! We’re more likely to have snow in the next two months than warm weather. It’s still dark between 5pm and 8am. We’ll get more storms and floods before any chance of a heatwave. Do you really spend 3 months every year dreading the arrival of Spring, OP?

Spring is definitely on its way, bulbs are up, the light is changing, subtle but it's happening.

Doveytail · 30/01/2024 00:00

I feel exactly the same OP, thought I was the only one! The longer days give me so much anxiety 😟
