I've had a thread on here before about this and found it really useful as there's no one in real life who doesn't look at me in horror if I even mention this.
You know how people have SAD when the nights draw in , I have it the other way round. This morning, the birdsong by me set me off. Its like a sense of dread. I think it's to do with change. I don't cope well with change generally, I have anxiety made worse by peri menopause so I think moving from something you know well and feel happy with (the dark nights) into something new makes me feel a bit unsettled . Are you the same? Want to chat about it?

I am not with you about hating Spring. However, given your comment about change, there is one thing where I hope we could find common ground. I would not put clocks back in winter, I'd like BST all year round. Even GMT year round for me would be preferable to what we have now.

I would happily have GMT year round. BST year round would be horrible for me

New2024 · 29/01/2024 08:52

Slightly different for me. I don’t dislike Spring weather or even Summer if the heat isn’t humid. I do dislike long days though. I’m a Summer birthday quite near the longest day but when it’s light until nearly 10, I really dislike that.

Don't be so spiteful

TheSlantedOwl · 29/01/2024 08:58

Yeah the ‘weirdos’ are the posters astonished to learn that some people feel differently about some things 🙄

They’re reminding me of an old French and Saunders sketch: “I don’t understand it therefore I don’t like it!”

OP I don’t feel this way, but I have a friend who feels this about summer. I wonder if it’s connected to losing the cosy hibernation of winter where you feel protected and enclosed?

ThePerfectDog · 29/01/2024 09:06

Although I feel very differently I get where you’re coming from. Winter is about hibernating and nurturing yourself, shutting everything away (and in nature rebuilding ready for the new year). Spring opens everything out again it’s very exposing and I think particularly those who lean towards anxiety or low mood (not saying this is you, OP) it can feel awkward, uncomfortable and unpleasant.

I’m totally the opposite, I find winter depressing and constraining, the sound of the birds and the drier / warmer weather makes me so happy.

Branster · 29/01/2024 09:10

I must confess it never crossed my mind that there would be anyone in the world not liking spring. My favourite season (I really like all of them for various reasons).
So this has been an eye opener for me.

It's not nice to call people weird if they experience things in different ways.

But then again, I suspect I am the ultimate weirdo because I absolutely detest chocolate and most chocolatey things. I cannot comprehend at all how do so many people (everyone of all ages) claim to love or crave chocolate.

Rockshore · 29/01/2024 09:11

I find it a bit depressing that so many people hate parts of the year this much. I used to dislike January then I decided it was pointless wishing away 1/12 of the time I have left in life so I’ve done my best to embrace it. I can’t help thinking it’s a bit of a non-problem tbh.

PTAProblems · 29/01/2024 09:12

I feel like this too OP. I love autumn and winter. I hate it when the clocks change and we have light nights. It really unsettles me and I don't sleep well until they change back again in October.
Makes me laugh how the people who suffer through the winter couldn't possibly comprehend how anyone can feel this the other way and have to derail the thread with it! If you don't feel that way, just let this be a supportive thread for those who do.

Freakinfraser · 29/01/2024 09:19

Do you struggle with change in other areas of your life? Like moving home, or job?

the seasons don’t really affect me as much as it does folks on here, but I am not a fan of long cold dark nights, it limits me, and I find the signs of spring quite joyous, I’ve a camellia in the garden which is unseasonably in full bloom already, but I can’t say it really impacts my day to day.

midgetastic · 29/01/2024 09:19

But surely not having spring would be the change ?

I don't hate parts of the year- as I have stated many times
I have enjoyed January so far and find much to enjoy in my life - in my PPs you'll see the feeling more clearly explained

I'm not sure what this means

OP posts:
ginasevern · 29/01/2024 09:43

I kind of get you OP. I'm not a fan of the transition to spring. I find it really unsettling. I feel restless but not in a good way and for some reason it makes my skin incredibly itchy (pollen maybe?). Spring can be quite windy and I also find that unsettling. I also get frustrated trying to figure out what to wear. It can be frosty in the morning and 20 degrees by the afternoon. I struggle with clothes anyway (ND) so this tips me over the edge. I like to know where I am.

On the other hand I absolutely love the summer. I can slip on a loose dress and flip flops without any drama. In the winter I can bundle up in jumpers (not wool!) and boots.

My favourite by far though is definitely the summer because I really don't like the cold and there is a sense of happiness and freedom about it.

Nice. Do you always pigeonhole people as weirdos if they express an opinion you don't happen to understand?

laclochette · 29/01/2024 09:46

I find Spring hard for different reasons - I just expect too much from it! I want it to be warmed and lighter than it is, I'm so desperate for summer and yet Spring is often still so chilly and deceptive.

As TS Eliot wrote, April is the cruellest month...

midgetastic · 29/01/2024 09:48

You said you find change unsettling

But Winter turns to spring each year

That's normal

The change to the natural order would be if we didn't have a change of the seasons

Just trying to help you view it a different way around

Rockfordpeach · 29/01/2024 09:50

Yes I'm the same, I have SAD in reverse and it makes me sad when the evenings start getting lighter. I love autumn and winter so much more than spring and summer

TheBayLady · 29/01/2024 09:54

I feel like that about Autumn, can't stand that time of year, everything dying, the dampness....Hate it.

jusanotherperson · 29/01/2024 09:59

100% agree with you and understand.

I hate the bright mornings and evenings - and love the dark and cosy mornings and evenings.

Least favorite day of the year is December 21st because the days start to get longer!

ah I see

It's not that change - it is the very change to the season that is the unsettling thing

I bet you won't get called a weirdo for this on here though :)

OP posts:
RampantIvy · 29/01/2024 10:03

When it's dark and bad weather, you can hunker down and be all cosy at home, candles lit, insence burning...

All of the above just makes me feel constrained and trapped. I like nothing more than to be outside pottering in my garden or going for a walk near one of the many local reservoirs.

It doesn't have to be hot, just not raining or grey.

Do winter lovers not like being outside much?

BarrelOfOtters · 29/01/2024 10:05

I know what you mean and get you.

There's a point in March where I always get quite down and find the arrival of Spring hard to deal with. It might be a change thing. I'm used to it now and try to accept it and go with it and know that it generally my lowest point of the year and that it gets better.

I like the longer days, I'm a gardener so I should welcome the first signs of spring and on some levels I do. But I'm in the North West so it can feel like winter will never end.

I've found it easier to deal with since regularly going on a warm holiday in February...
