Sorry if I’ve missed any threads on this.

It’s not just sky news reporting this but for days now in the media this is being raised.

AIBU - to be extremely worried and concerned about this?

Is anyone else not worried?? Are we being prepared ready as “the higher up” know more and the threat is bigger than we’re told.

what age would it be from and to??

l‘m so scared for the world our children are growing up in 😢

Time to 'think the unthinkable' and consider UK conscription, says Britain's former top NATO commander

General Sir Richard Sherriff tells Sky News that even if Russia is defeated in the war against Ukraine, it is going to remain determined to rebuild another empire, subjugate Ukraine, and then move on to other ex-Soviet countries, like NATO members. Tha...

@Blah12345678999 you are desperate to pick an argument aren't you?

No no I would like to learn and understand what I’m missing. Putin is a bad guy but I don’t think our government is squeaky clean either, they know Putin is a problem and should be protecting the nation from things like this. It’s like we haven’t progressed from WWII and ending up in the same situation which is mad!

Some of you probably don't know anyone who has a living memory of going to war. A few older family generations went to fight for our freedoms and our nation which we all take for granted. They all came back very different and proud.

I think if our Nationhood was challenged, you wouldn't be fighting for a political party it would be for our basic freedoms and our way of life.

Would no one on this thread take up arms for your town or city, as I think I would. We are all reaping the benefits of WWI and WWII.

I would fight if an aggressor landed on our shores without a second thought.

I would not, however, fight another countries war. Essentially I am against all killing of everything, including animals. But I would fight in self defence.

Not RTFT, but the Russians have accepted convicts and former convicts into their army in this war, with the promise that their criminal records will be purged after their service.

It’s not just Russia though. If Russia did invade a nato country I can guarantee China would take the opportunity to retake Taiwan which puts them in direct conflict with the USA. China is set to overtake the USA in GDP soon. War is definately inevitable at some point

So they all refuse. What then?

Not everyone will refuse. But many will

The Government will reap what it has sown basically.

Theothersideofthefence · 25/01/2024 22:24

@Drosera that is your opinion. I have had plenty of family blood spilled at war. I've lost family members to suicide, on the return from war also. In my profession, I have counselled many, many men and women who have been irreversibly damaged by going to war. Your view is your view. That one is mine, regardless of emotional manipulation.

Which is why, after your post at 2212, you need to spend some time researching this pretty basic history.

TBF - we have a problem recruiting for the Forces at the moment.

I wonder how the army do it during strikes when it's not that big.
The Navy doesn't have many ships
The RAF has about 200 combat aircraft

It still ultimately comes down to money.

cerisepanther73 · 25/01/2024 22:25

@pinkstripeycat

Thank you for your very insightful post

It certainly shone a very bight light on how even the basics such as uniform and Food which is essential to keep the morale going of an army wasn't even catered properly for,

Gas masks being 25 years out of date

Bloody hell !

😳

Mboscodictiasaur · 25/01/2024 22:25

OP I think you should be more worried about the amount of people saying they would object.

If the time came when this was truly needed, I despair for our country that this is the attitude now.

raspberryjuiceandpompoms · 25/01/2024 22:26

I think it’s ridiculous to think that Russia has any intention or resources to fight another land war, especially with NATO forces. What would they do with Britain?! Annex it? Russia is stuck up to its neck on Ukranian soil. Not enough men to fight that war so that they had to bring the “dad army” out of reserve.

i think it’s scaremongering tactics by the government to increase spending on army and also to justify what comes next. The only reason why this war is still being fought is because Ukraine is being supplied with missiles and artillery. NATO Is going to supply Ukraine with long range missiles that will hit civilian targets in Russia. Which, as you may understand, Russia will not tolerate. This might trigger Vlad to press that red button. Nuclear warheads are no longer just bling mass killers, there are strategic ones, ones that can be used to destroy underground targets etc etc. I think if things are taken too far, Vlad might use a nuclear war head in Ukraine in attempt to regain control. The rest will depend on how NATO reacts to this.

I suspect MN is not the demographic for conscription.

Blah12345678999 · 25/01/2024 22:26

To be clear I am not trying to argue with anyone, I am keen to understand other people’s perspectives especially where they don’t agree with my comments. I don’t think our government is squeaky clean either and I’m amazed if we could end up being in a conscription situation in this day in age 🤷🏻‍♀️

Good news, we live in the modern world. They don't even need to shoot you!
The government can just cancel your bank account if you step out of line. Either your husband and/or son joins up or you all end up on the street forever.

If it were to happen (which it won't), that's how it would happen.

We are not a dictatorship and if we became one what would we be fighting for anyway.
Ps. Don’t forget husband/ wife / son / daughter could be called up.

Shropshiregirl51 · 25/01/2024 22:29

I suspect posturing. It makes a good headline and garners public support to spend on defence.

russia in two years haven’t conquered Ukraine. Their special forces are wiped out and their airforce resembles a small limp penis!

As time moves on their tech people are moving out and they can’t develop. All the time the west is developing better and better AI better capability.

if we had a war with Russia we would have conscription, but it’s a very big if.

worry about healthy eating, not drinking too much, spending enough time with your kids and looking after yourself. This talk of war is just white noise

I posted this earlier but here’s a YouGovn survey from 2018
Theres a lot that would refuse and I suspect even more now after we ve experienced Covid

I'd rather fight than sit back and wait for drunken soldiers to go knocking on doors, beating up/killing men, and looking for pretty young girls to gang rape. Which is what happens every time a country is overthrown and has been happening in Ukraine.

Saying "let the government throw me in jail" won't work when the government have been deposed and there's nobody left to fight for your human rights.

Blah12345678999 · 25/01/2024 22:20

Well then the economy would crumble because no one would be able to spend any money 🤷🏻‍♀️

How long would you (and your family and your friends) be willing to live like that when your menfolk could just 'do the right thing' and have it all put right.

The economy would be fine.

Theothersideofthefence · 25/01/2024 22:32

@Drosera good for you.

Any war landing on our shores would be most likely cyber. They could shut us down and cut us off easily enough without a boot on the ground

Edited

It’s more likely the US election prompting NATO speaking up

Drosera · 25/01/2024 22:33

Although, realistically there's more chance of Rishi Sunak winning the men's heavyweight boxing title than there is Russia beating NATO.

MyopicBunny · 25/01/2024 22:33

I can't see anyone starting a land war with a country that has nuclear capability. Mutually assured destruction.
