Ready yourself for the Citizen's Army

Is the head of the army being sensationalist to highlight lack of army funding or is the reality of a citizen's army in the UK a step towards a new era of conscription? Both parties would play anything like this down in an election year.

I wouldn’t get out of bed for this warmongering government. Let them send themselves and their own kids out first. They have done nothing for the people of this country except fill their own pockets by arming other countries. They can fuck off, then fuck off some more. I’m not playing war games and I suspect the majority of the uk would say the same.

Virtually none of the servicemen and women who have been butchered in wars in the past hundred years have died "fighting for their country", that's a massive cynical con. They died fighting for the careers of politicians/American oil interests/various other grubby and venal causes. War is predominantly working class people being slaughtered to protect the interests of the rich and powerful. Nothing to be proud of there; plenty to be angry about, though.

100% this. Perfectly put.

ChedderGorgeous · 24/01/2024 23:59

JenniferBooth · 24/01/2024 23:47

They mean working class people right. Including those living in social housing
Because im sure they would be happy to step up after being told they are entitled and should be grateful , that they are more likely to have problems and that they affect the value of privately owned houses nearby.

Yeah Fuck off!

Working people living in social housing DID step up during Covid many in essential roles as key workers and yet afterwards its back to the default as ive listed above.

Ever heard the saying............fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me

I think the phrase goes,
"fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."

If the country's against the west get together the war probably will come to us especially missile and drone attacks on the major cities.

This is why I believe the west can't afford to give away too much to Ukraine.

For the last 70 years we have forgotten about war and always see it as a distant thing we don't need to worry about.

Russia are now going to spend a third of their budget on defence.

They're decommissioning two battle ships, not enough crew.

So you'd be happy to live under a Nazi state?

My dad fought in WW2. He drove armoured bulldozers. Had to dig the pits to bury the dead in the extermination camps.

And yes, he didn't fight for his country but for his mates who stood next to him facing the incoming.

But he knew that the Nazi were not good people. Which is why he volunteered, despite being in a reserved occupation.

justasking111 · 25/01/2024 00:08

Statistically very few young people from the south east enlist. The forces have relied on the north, Wales and Scotland for that.

I'm not sure that would be the same these days.

I’m an historian, and know all about NATO, and have family in the military. My slightly tongue in cheek comment was about how we have isolated ourselves from wider support. But seriously, Donald Trump has said he will withdraw from NATO if re-elected and that the US would never defend the EU. Your certainty about the defence NATO might offer in future appears optimistic in the light of shifting geopolitics.

constantgarden · 25/01/2024 00:18

The WW2 conscript army kept fighting because they were promised the NHS, welfare state, council housing, and all that was delivered after the war. That’s all been dismantled.

Really?

My dad didn't.

Do you speak for all of the generation?

I think Finland still has national service

About 85 countries worldwide.

In Europe: Austria, Belarus, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Netherlands (not enforced), Norway, Moldova, Lithuania, Switzerland.

Russia and Ukraine do too.

OzziePopPop · 25/01/2024 00:55

I’ll volunteer DH (they won’t want him, he’s physically disabled, like me). He’s adamant that he’s prepared for the zombie apocalypse though so he should be of some use!

I forgot to add Sweden to the list.

In the news recently.

I see you've added Sweden now. Also, Germany still has conscription on the books although the actual draft has been suspended for over a decade. Some geniuses have talked about reinstating it but the organizational realities don't make sense - no more trainers, no more barracks, etc etc. Plus iffy legally- there'd no way they'd need everybody, and if you only draft a small member how do you justify whom you pick? Which is in part why the draft got suspended in the first place.

Justfinking · 25/01/2024 01:20

ComtesseDeSpair · 24/01/2024 22:17

Conscription to do what? Half of the U.K. can barely waddle half a mile, let alone take a physical position in the armed forces.

So I’m guessing it’s simply intended to draw attention to lack of funding / shit conditions.

Ha ha, yes! And given everyone has anxiety, mental health issues or some kind of 'hidden disability' I think if this was a necessity we'd all be doomed!

I can’t imagine it would be any worse than living under the Tory party we have now, or the so called Labour Party we might expect.
No, let the warmongers play their “ billy big balls” games.
Putin is not interested in going to war with the UK. And we should stop bombing other countries to destabilise them. It’s all about the money, it’s a game and people die, but not the ones who benefit by it, they stay safe in their bunkers.
Oh and yes my father fought in ww2 as well, it was a different time. We are not in the 1930’s now.

Livinginanotherworld · 25/01/2024 01:24

Another point, Germany “ lost” the war and we “won”. Ask yourself who has the better standard of living…..clue, it’s not us.

OlympicProcrastinator · 25/01/2024 03:15

We’d be annihilated. At least 70% of people would be signed off with ‘anxiety and depression’ (always both).

The rest would say they have already suffered enough ‘literal violence’ because people got their pronouns wrong.

oatmilk4breakfast · 25/01/2024 04:51

one of my worries is that Sweden and Finland haven’t spent the last four decades eroding the idea of ‘society’

Asiatoyork · 25/01/2024 05:11

Lobbying in advance of the government spending review I would think.

But from what I understand, our military is in a terrible state.

Ap24 · 25/01/2024 05:27

The military has been underfunded for years. They have a massive retention problem, partially due to low pay and partially due to changes to the pensions and benefits. They are not allowed to strike and have to pick up the pieces when other public service workers do so. So similar to the NHS what can be done if you can't get the staff? That's his point.

Newchapterbeckons · 25/01/2024 05:43

I doubt very much this war will be fought with ‘people’ there are far easier ways to bring a country to its knees.

Its sensationalist.
