How to pronounce…

LightheartedMy friend and I disagree on how you pronounce the word advertisement. One of us says “add-vert-iSS-ment” and the other says “add-ver-tiZe-ment”. We’re both English if this is relevant 😊

AdVERTissment

misskatamari · 23/01/2024 18:52

Wow this thread has shocked me! I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone in the UK say ad-vert-is-ment, only ever heard Americans say it that way. I’d say advert-eyes-ment. I now need to ask everyone I encounter over the coming days how they say this!

gardenfoundry · 23/01/2024 18:52

Ad-ver-tiss-ment. The strongest sounding syllable is the 'ver'.

Grew up in west London.

Harrietsaunt · 23/01/2024 18:52

Definitely emphasis on the second syllable.

Saying advertIZement is all kinds of wrong. SE

AdVERTissment.

This is the way

Turkeyhen · 23/01/2024 18:57

I’ve heard adverTIZEment up north but adVERT-is-ment down south. I think both are acceptable pronunciations.
