Non Kennel Club Lab

More of a WIBU! We got a Lab puppy in October. At the time, they were advertised as KC-registered Labs. The breeder sent us the details of both the mother and father and we saw both dogs. We paid 1300 for the puppy (which is a lot for us!). The vendor told us that she was in the process of registering the puppies and would send us the details.
I'm not quite sure what's happened with the vendor, but she seems to have had a bit of a meltdown (I think a family crisis) - and either hasn't or can't register the puppies. I'm honestly not sure what's going on. She's stopped responding to texts etc. A friend of ours also has one of the puppies and she's not responding to them either. We (obvs) love our puppy, but we also might want to breed from her and so the KC registration is important. Just not quite sure where to go from here! Any thoughts?!

op you’ve been scammed

regenerate · 22/01/2024 15:10

absolutely do not breed without Kc reg

CharlotteMakepeace · 22/01/2024 15:10

You bought your puppy from a puppy farmer.

regenerate · 22/01/2024 15:11

We paid 1300 for the puppy (which is a lot for us!)

and a heck of a lot for a puppy from a puppy farm

Floralnomad · 22/01/2024 15:12

Have you checked the names of the parents to see whether that are registered

aprilshowers2015 · 22/01/2024 15:13

Why do you want to breed from her?

purplemonkey12 · 22/01/2024 15:15

I really don't think she's a puppy farmer. We know the shoot where she works her dogs. She's local to us. We saw the puppies in her house. I'm pretty sure that she's sent us the relevant KC club registrations for both parents.

We don't especially want to breed from her, but we do want her to be KC registered (if that's what she is!)

root them out then
and check

but if a hedge… you don’t have

ComtesseDeSpair · 22/01/2024 15:16

Presumably you didn’t buy your dog because you are experienced Labrador enthusiasts active in the world of showing and improving the breed or maintaining excellent working lines - which are really the only reasons to breed dogs? If this breeder is as renowned as you say she is, then why don’t you trust that she’s currently just a bit off radar and will get around to registering shortly?

DancefloorAcrobatics · 22/01/2024 15:16

Contact Kennel Club and report that someone is using KC registered names X & Y to sell puppies.

But yes, you have been scammed.

Is the puppy microchipped? The details of the breeder should be on there. It's by law that puppies are registered first to breeder them you change details when picking up.

For future reference, never buy a puppy that is KC registered without receiving the papers when picking up the puppy... papers take 2-3 weeks max to come through. No excuses for breeder not to have them!

TheDevilGun · 22/01/2024 15:17

From your OP. I seriously, seriously hope you do NOT breed from her, you are all that is wrong with dog owners!

puppy farmers aren’t stupid

they will bring them in to a home environment for viewings

regenerate · 22/01/2024 15:19

the very fact you took this puppy home without reg details and now you think the owner gave you reg details for parents… would indicate that you are not appropriate person to be a breeder

SwingTheMonkey · 22/01/2024 16:13

We’ve had 3 labs, all KC registered before we collected them. We wouldn’t have taken them without it. How old was the puppy when you collected it, op?

Haydenn · 22/01/2024 16:41

£1300 maybe a lot for you, but it is cheap for a KC registered lab. I am thinking you’ve been had - or at the very least the breeder has realised that KC registration isn’t as I’m simple as submitting some forms. If you have the mum and dad names you can look them up on the KC database and check that they are registered, and maybe decide if it was an intentional scam or if they’ve just dropped the ball

Haydenn · 22/01/2024 16:43

Most decent breeders will put an endorsement in the contract and on the KC registration that would prevent you registering any pups as KC anyway. Particularly for first time/inexperienced breeders

HairyQueenofSnots · 22/01/2024 16:47

Was going to mention the endorsement. Fairly standard unless prior agreement not to impose one.

muddyford · 22/01/2024 16:48

The puppy should be registered to the breeder before the puppies go to their new home. Ditto microchipping. And I paid more than double that for my KC registered puppy with all health and genetic testing done on both parents.

muddyford · 22/01/2024 16:49

And there is an endorsement on his registration to prevent him being randomly bred.

KitchenSinkLlama · 22/01/2024 16:49

Why would you want to breed from your pup? Why would you risk her health?

Yes this.

In my experience registered pedigree dog (and cat) breeders want you to sign something which says you'll get the puppy or kitten neutered and will want the name of the vet practice which did it. And rightly so.

No responsible breeder will want you to take their pedigree animal and breed it with just anything and sell on the babies.

Usually if you want a show or breed quality animal from a breeder you have to pay A LOT more than you do for a 'pet' quality animal and they almost certainly wont sell it to you anyway.

PinkflowersWhiteBerries · 22/01/2024 16:53

I would agree with PP that you should check the registrations of the parents. Pay particular attention to the number of litters the Dam has registered against her name. - if she is legit.

If this is not intentional puppy farming it could be overbreeding of the same bit h. Either way, contact the Kennel Club, if she is truly reputable, they should help you sort it out.

Jennyjojo5 · 22/01/2024 16:54

Inexperienced new puppy owner might want to breed from her new lab? Appalling.
