Is anyone else basically mute when alone or am I weird?

Is anyone else “mute”?

I’ve realised I never talk to myself. I don’t ever speak out loud, I rarely gasp or make noises out loud if I’m on my own. I can’t physically sing to myself, it makes me recoil and cringe. Not because I can’t sing; but I just make myself cringe.
I am genuinely mute when I’m alone. I’m so so far in my own shell. The thought of me talking out loud to myself makes me recoil and feel sick.

What is wrong with me? What do I do to overcome this??

I don’t think it’s a problem really! I was like that until I lived on my own, would hardly ever laugh at the tv! Now I talk to myself out loud almost non-stop and crack up at anything 😆

maddiemookins16mum · 22/01/2024 17:19

I talk to myself constantly. I was in Aldi on Saturday having a chat to myself about Fage yoghurt.

I even talk to myself when i am wandering round the supermarket trying to find stuff.

I do this. One time I was looking for bisto took me ages to find then when I saw it I was like ahhh bisto. Then I laughed to myself 🤣🤣

I talk to myself out loud so much after years of working from home that I'm a total nuisance in an office!

I talk to things when I’m alone. Stuff like “Now don’t start that again” to my laptop, “Ah, there you are” to my hairbrush/my favourite spatula/keys, and “Hello. I’m not sure that’s the best idea” to the spider making a web between my desk lamp and my notebook (can’t be persuaded to live on my pot plants).

I sing along to the radio, say Hi to dogs in the woods, and also to the sheep in the field who are too far away to hear.

I’m not sure whether this is normal or not but I don’t care. My head is full of dialogue and songs anyway so some of it will inevitably slip out.

This is so familiar to me Grin
I work at home, usually alone, and my job basically involves sitting in silence and concentrating. I have to talk to my laptop ('Come on, little Mac' when it's being slow) and spiders in the corner/birds outside the window etc, or some days I wouldn't say a word.
I also sing along to the radio/music. And do things like groaning/squeaking out loud when I'm standing waiting for the kettle to boil and try to touch my toes or stretch my quads etc.

Another chatterbox. More likely to go mute around people. When I’m alone I have overlapping thoughts in my head and all kinds of random thoughts slip out, as well as some imaginary conversations. The neighbours cat stops by for a chat some afternoons too.

Your inner world sounds so peaceful op.

I talk out loud to myself a lot when I'm on my own.
In fact I'm probably the person I have my most interesting conversations with 😂
I think that's weirder.

Me too. I debate all sorts with myself, muttering away, especially when gardening.

KatnissNeverdone · 22/01/2024 18:38

I have a constant internal monologue. Sometimes it's in my head and sometimes it's out loud but it is always there.

Meditation is pointless because I can never silence my thoughts or let them just pass me by. My thoughts also keep me awake at night. Not like an anxiety thing, my head just DOES NOT turn off. I do have aphantasia though so wonder if my brain just overcompensates.

RedRobyn2021 · 22/01/2024 19:09

I talk to myself all the time 😂

Me too, don't care if I seem nutty!

Lemonyfuckit · 22/01/2024 19:50

I talk to myself out loud when stressed / annoyed eg swearing at traffic / at my computer at work emails tend to be the main culprits. Do quite like the odd singalong when by myself - by myself is really the best time to do that as I am an awful singer. But have a fairly regular monologue going on inside my head the rest of the time.

Gwenhwyfar · 22/01/2024 19:52

Count yourself lucky. I talk to myself and I'm regularly scared someone will come in and hear me eg empty place at work where somebody could then appear.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 22/01/2024 19:52

I don't think this is weird or if it is then I'm happily weird too.

I think a lot rather than talk...silently.

I do sing I'm the shower sometimes but I am completely tone deaf so maybe the water makes it sound better!

Pickingmyselfup · 22/01/2024 20:47

I talk to myself loads! I do wonder if people think I'm one of those dramatic attention seekers who make a sudden noise or sneeze or cough loudly but I think it's just that I live in my own head and I'm oblivious to my surroundings. Probably why I talk to myself actually!

I always talk to the animals too, as soon as I walk in the door I say hello to the rats and if I see a cat I'll talk to them too.

TheaBrandt · 22/01/2024 20:49

I’m the opposite never internally shut up! Dont do it out loud! Or sing songs or complete musicals. Listen to podcasts to shut myself up!

Fionaville · 22/01/2024 20:54

I don't talk to myself. I'd think it's more concerning if you do, isn't it? I know I'd raise an eyebrow if I walked into DH talking to himself.
I do sing though and I'll laugh out loud if I hear something funny on a podcast or something.

liveforsummer · 22/01/2024 21:06

I don't say anything out loud, didn't know that wasn't normal? But the voice in my head is never quiet 😅

Highwaypatrol · 22/01/2024 21:08

My internal monologue becomes external, then sometimes i forget and it happens in the supermarket and i startle old people.

EC22 · 22/01/2024 21:09

I do not talk to myself 🤣

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 22/01/2024 21:09

I'm surprised how many people aren't talking to themselves? It helps me process my thoughts. I'd rather talk to myself than most other people, tbh.

AuntMarch · 22/01/2024 21:16

I called myself a dickhead the other day and then that amused me because I never normally speak out loud when I'm alone. If I have a quiet weekend while my son is at his dad's and I just want to chill sometimes the only words I speak in 48 hours are to thank the take away delivery person.

Gowlett · 22/01/2024 21:17

I do a running commentary most of the time! Even when I’m at the shops, people assume I’m in the Bluetooth or chatting!

Caswallonthefox · 22/01/2024 21:40

It depends entirely on what mood I'm in. And what the subject is. I talk to my cat mostly but that's usually when she meows first. I also have one word convo's with my ds when he goes by my door. I talk to myself when I'm shopping.
Otherwise, I don't give a shiny shite what people think of me.

hottchocolate · 22/01/2024 21:44

I don't usually talk to myself except if I am worked up such as after an argument with husband and then I may talk it through with myself if I am in the car or home alone.

mrlistersgelfbride · 22/01/2024 22:28

I'm the same as you. There is no problem.

Talking to yourself (more than the odd word of exclamation or something) seems a bit batshit to me. I don't see the need to speak words when I can think them.
