Why do people do this? They write their OP with "I have this friend, let's call her Susan... Let's call him Steve..."

And then never once use the name in the rest of the post or any subsequent posts. Why give your "friend" a made up name, tell everyone it's a made up name, and not use it anyway?

It's a small thing, but it really rubs me up the wrong way.

YABU - get over yourself, you ridiculous pedant, who cares if people want to assign unused names

YANBU - Assigning names that are never used is just dumb. (It's a horrible blustery Monday and I am feeling as petty at LenaLamont)

You’re forgetting the whole other set of cousins who then arrive in the story and who are dubbed X, Y and Z.

(Though admittedly, there are also the posters whose fake names have a weirdly distracting mismatched element, like the two couples whose fake names are Bob, Carol, Frank and Annabella-Mary.)

There was a thread a little while ago where the OP had assigned names to the people involved that began with X, Y and Z - but Y was a man and OP couldn't think of a male name starting with Y; so it then diverged away into a 'Suggest male names that begin with Y' thread!

25 (f) and 24 (m) annoy the hell out of me.

25 (f) and 24 (m) annoy the hell out of me.

Especially when they sound like a bra size, e.g 34F.

Things like DD5 are very confusing too. Some people mean their daughter is 5 and some people mean this is their fifth daughter and some mean it's their fifth child, who happens to be a daughter.

I tend to assume any thread with a large cast of names characters is made up. Though I do prefer Arya, Ben, Cornelia and Daiki to A, B, C, D... At least it's easier to follow the made up story.

The: "I think my stepmother (75F) is having an affair with my brother (22M). Should I tell my Dad (34M)?" is the standard writing style from Reddit's AITA. It doesn't bother me, and it can highlight some pretty egregious age issues in the (mostly fictional) posts.

I don't necessarily kind the ages being given, if it makes a difference from what you might expect, but when somebody feels the need to tell you that their mother is a F or their husband is a M, it seems kind of pointless.
