Why do people do this? They write their OP with "I have this friend, let's call her Susan... Let's call him Steve..."

And then never once use the name in the rest of the post or any subsequent posts. Why give your "friend" a made up name, tell everyone it's a made up name, and not use it anyway?

It's a small thing, but it really rubs me up the wrong way.

YABU - get over yourself, you ridiculous pedant, who cares if people want to assign unused names

YANBU - Assigning names that are never used is just dumb. (It's a horrible blustery Monday and I am feeling as petty at LenaLamont)

I also hate the posters who reply with:

"Bear with me. Could it be possible that...."'and then some incredibly unlikely, far-fetched possibility in answer to the OP.

Or ones where the OP says something like "my husband is cheating on me. Am I unreasonable to chuck him out?"

And somebody replies "I voted YABU because you should have thrown him out long before now"

🙄 Yes, very clever, but that's not how the voting works, is it?

This reminded me of something my ex does. He will say “I used to work with a woman they called Jane”, or “I used to play golf with a man they called Bob” or whatever. The first couple of times I asked why they called her Jane, or what Bob’s real name was and he replied “because that’s her name” or “Bob…”

Eventually I stopped asking and just assumed it was a phrase he used (that I’ve never heard anyone else use, ever), instead of saying “I used to work with someone called Jane”. It didn’t get any less annoying though.

Reminds me of this!

This irrationally pisses me off too!

Also, when people say 'DD has an expensive hobby, THINK animal related blah blah blah...'

For some reason that '...think' turn of phrase is so grating to me (think, nails on a chalkboard).

Oh my GOD I’m so glad it’s not just me!

Soubriquet · 22/01/2024 13:51

I hate hate hate it when they won’t say what hobby they are talking about because it’s outing.

It really isn’t. Millions of people likely do your hobby so unless it’s digging up skeletons to make them dance to music for a Facebook page, trust me, your hobby isn’t outing

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 22/01/2024 13:51

Surely inverted commas convey the situation with the least amount of fuss?

My friend 'Susan' and her DH 'Steve' makes it very clear that they aren't their real names, but you're just using them for simplicity.

gardenfoundry · 22/01/2024 13:52

ohididntrealise · 22/01/2024 13:35

Oh yeah, the ridiculous overuse of "said". Why? It's Mumsnet, not a legal document.

I use "said" in that context all the time, both on MN and off 🤣

As soon as someone names their friends Steve or Susan I've closed the tab. I'd much rather read "DF1" and "DF2" than "Friend A" and "Friend B". For some reason if it's abbreviated in a MN style it's a lot more easy to digest. Is that just me?

Ifulikepinacoladas · 22/01/2024 13:54

For some reason that '...think' turn of phrase is so grating to me (think, nails on a chalkboard).

Same, just say e.g. or like!

Gobolina · 22/01/2024 13:55

I can't stand the posts that are one long bit of text with no comma, full stop or paragraph to be seen. Not to mention the text speak and 'he should of's instead of 'should have's etc.

There seem to have been a lot of them this weekend for some reason.

SmallGreatThings1 · 22/01/2024 13:57

Mine is ‘spends’ as a noun. I hate it so much.

Ah!! Is this a northern thing?

I'm not from the north but I now live in Yorkshire. People often ask me about my dog: "What do they call her?" 🤔

I'd never come across that kind of phrasing before I moved to Yorkshire. And I find its people in their 60s and older that use this kind of phrasing more than younger people.

KimberleyClark · 22/01/2024 14:07

If I see posts referring g to people by name I always assume they are not the real names anyway.

KarenNotAKaren · 22/01/2024 14:08

YANBU it just confuses things!

My pet peeve is when they say, I can’t tell you my hobby/job/kids ages as that would be too outing.

Yes because you’re the only accountant with a 5 year old who plays golf

could be outing, unusual for a 5 year olds to play golf.

Greenpolkadot · 22/01/2024 14:09

I also find it irritating..I want to say..' let's not'
And all this..' think cleaning.'...think horse's..
Why not say what it is for fucks sake

I don’t like posts that look like poems either. Each sentence on a separate line and lines of different lengths etc.

Or referring to something as 'spenny'

LoreleiG · 22/01/2024 14:10

I totally agree. Also ‘fast forward to’ usually makes me close a thread for reasons I can’t explain.

Exactly...it can't be that outing..
Who cares what hobby you do..why don't you want mnetters to know what it is. ?

Ha! I mentally reply, "Must we?"

Maybe the OPs have loads of unused children's or pets' names their partner vetoed and this lets them use them at last.

Let's call her Araminta Hephzibah Trixiebelle...

You say this but there was someone who was in a brass quartet that specialised in a specific genre.. that was quite a niche hobby.

MorrisZapp · 22/01/2024 12:56

Beats the heck out of person A and person B.

When friend C turns up I hop it and get the dinner on.

You’re forgetting the whole other set of cousins who then arrive in the story and who are dubbed X, Y and Z.

(Though admittedly, there are also the posters whose fake names have a weirdly distracting mismatched element, like the two couples whose fake names are Bob, Carol, Frank and Annabella-Mary.)

Ime it's an old person/parts of the north thing. Wrong footed me a few times when I wasn't used to it - eg "What do they call you?" ... er, my name, they call me my name ... 😵‍💫

Anyway OP yanbu but I don't have time to get into this because I'm supposed to be doing something else, think work, and then I've got somewhere to be, think home, can't say more as too outing.

Newgolddream70 · 22/01/2024 14:39

If I see a post with persons A, B and C etc my brain just 🤯

Deathbyathousandcats · 22/01/2024 14:40

I totally agree, OP
