to eat the same breakfast and lunch every single day?

I didn't realise it was weird until a colleague pointed it out. Disclaimer - the colleague is a friend, we were just chatting - she wasn't criticising!

Every week I pot up 5 lots of overnight oats (literally just oats and a spoon of trail mix) and have 1 a day for breakfast

I cook a chicken on a Sunday and have a chicken, pease pudding and stuffing sandwich every day for lunch.

I use the rest of the chicken in a family meal, sometimes dh will make himself a sandwich with it.

I've been doing this for about 2 years straight. Every single work day - never given it a thought!

How weird am I?

I don't find it weird but I do think it's a bit dull. I'd be so bored having the same things 5 days in a row. But then I also get why you'd do it - sometimes having to think about what to make or have for lunch and dinner every single day until the end of time makes me want to cry! If it works for you then carry on.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 20/01/2024 17:51

I do this It takes the stress of planning what to eat for me and I live alone

GrandColombier · 20/01/2024 17:51

Weekday breakfasts are always 2 eggs scrambled, spinach, kimchi, and slice of sourdough with a black coffee. Simple but starts me off nicely for the day.

But lunches are varied, not sure I could have them fully the same.

bookmarket · 20/01/2024 17:53

If it suits you who cares what anyone thinks. There's plenty of other opportunities for variety at the weekends and evening meal. It sounds sensible to eat the same breakfast and lunch if you're busy and also trying to eat sensibly.

Wallabyone · 20/01/2024 17:54

I get it, but it's not for me. Same profession, but I make work lunches as interesting/nice as possible to have something to look forward to 😂 Usually a sandwich or sushi, but a nice sandwich (yes, you need something you can eat one-handed!). Bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon, egg mayo and watercress, decent ham, salad and mustard. I usually skip breakfast and have coffee in my travel mug, making a fresh one at break.

MassageForLife · 20/01/2024 17:57

Granted it's unusual - but I was just speaking about this to someone today. It saves time, it saves money and food waste - it's a really smart way to eat.

But I think I would have to have a rotation. I could cope with the same things all week - but not every week. Maybe I could do eight different options so I have two months worth of choice...

SwordToFlamethrower · 20/01/2024 17:58

Eating a restricted, samey diet is bad for your health, not to mention boring!

ManchesterLu · 20/01/2024 18:00

I don't think it's weird. Some people literally just eat to fuel their body and that's great. I wish I was like that!

diddl · 20/01/2024 18:01

I'm not sure it's weird more unusual I would think to have two meals the same.

That a lot of people probably have the same breakfast most days.

And lunch might be sandwiches, crisps & fruit so perhaps not a great variation?

junebirthdaygirl · 20/01/2024 18:01

One of my work colleagues..also teaching had the same lunch everyday for his 40 years career. Exact same bread. At least l do change the bread depending on what catches my eye in the supermarket but l do have the same breakfast and the same lunch filling every day. I also have the exact same yoghurt as its my favourite so no need to change! I wonder is it a teacher thing as we can't leave the building to try new places or buy something on a whim .
My dh has 2 poached eggs for breakfast everyday for years. We are very predictable.

KnittedCardi · 20/01/2024 18:02

Modern hypothesise about variety aside. Which is actually only recently available. The most healthy previous generations, tended to have a very limited, seasonal diet, with very little variability. I don't think there is anything intrinsically wrong with that. It seemed to work for them.

Hocuspocusnonsense · 20/01/2024 18:04

i couldn’t bare that, I would be so bored of those foods. My ex colleague used to do this. Tiny tub of oats type breakfast with 5 blueberries! Always 5 never 4 or 6. It used to freak me out 🤣

GingerLiberalFeminist · 20/01/2024 18:05

I tend to do this, but I've got ludicrous dietary requirements and I CBA with cooking so it's partly a need.

Honestly cooking different food is a total faff, who has time in the morning? I just wanna fuel my body and go!

RedLorryHelloLorry · 20/01/2024 18:05

I've been doing it my whole life and didn't realise it was "weird" until a couple of years ago. Food boredom isn't really a thing for me. I don't eat breakfast and lunch for "fun", just because I need the nutrients/food to stave off hunger: Oats for breakfast, Greek salad for lunch. Both of which i make myself. Sometimes I'll have a cheese and ham toastie for lunch if I'm cold.

I don't think having cornflakes, then toast then a fruit salad, then special k, then a bagel etc would enhance my life in any way. Same with lunch: just means I need to spend more energy and effort planning things and more money. 🤷‍♀️

hopscotcher · 20/01/2024 18:10

I don't think that's weird. I have exactly the same breakfast and more or less the same lunch (if I'm at work) every day.

ScroogeMcDuckling · 20/01/2024 18:13

I think a lot of people who do this, not with chicken pease pudding and stuffing sandwiches, that is sophisticated, more like “cheese and Brandon on white” for lunch, and a bowl of cereal for breakfast.

My first lodger froze rolls - always reduced - with delicious fillings in the freezer, and took them out in the morning on her way to work.

she ate a massive bowl of porridge for breakfast made with water daily, and would do the pear, apple, banana, orange and grapes after the porridge.

for tea it was either a roasted chicken breast or baked salmon fillet on salad and supper was stewed apples with a spoonful of yoghurt.

My husband was always shocked at the rigidity of her diet, but in my opinion she ate extremely well.

If someone else cooked, she would eat anything she was given, thoroughly enjoy it and be a very entertaining guest.

MasterBeth · 20/01/2024 18:18

YANBU, apart from the pease pudding. Is it the 1930s where you live?

Wearegettingfedup · 20/01/2024 18:20

My husband eats the same food for breakfast and lunch at exactly the same time everyday. He is definitely ASD …took me many years to figure it out .
I wouldn’t say it’s weird because it’s normal for him.
I personally like variety.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 20/01/2024 18:42

I don't mind alternating between only two or three things for breakfast- I don't have time in the morning to be thinking about what I want to eat. But lunch and dinner are pretty varied. Apparently d's grandparents used to have specific dinners on specific days of the week, same every week!

Riapia · 20/01/2024 18:42

Some people get up, catch the same train and go to the same job every day.
Is that boring?
What about going home to the same house every day. Is that boring?

Atethehalloweenchocs · 20/01/2024 18:55

There's a lot to be said for freeing up brain space by not spending time and energy thinking about simple decisions - its why President Obama owned multiples of the suit, tie and shirt he wore every day and ate the same things repeatedly. If you dont get bored, why not? Would not work for me, but that does not mean its not a good idea.

Octomingo · 20/01/2024 18:57

It frees me up to think about my outfit and makeup choices for work!

Octomingo · 20/01/2024 18:58

And I do get really bored of my lunches, but they do the job. And Monday to Friday are shit anyway. Weekends are for nice lunches.

Seaside3 · 20/01/2024 19:07

I find it quite sad that so many people have such low expectations for their working life.

sunglassesonthetable · 20/01/2024 19:13

Well Vicky Becks does it OP. Enjoy. 👍🏻😄
