to eat the same breakfast and lunch every single day?

I didn't realise it was weird until a colleague pointed it out. Disclaimer - the colleague is a friend, we were just chatting - she wasn't criticising!

Every week I pot up 5 lots of overnight oats (literally just oats and a spoon of trail mix) and have 1 a day for breakfast

I cook a chicken on a Sunday and have a chicken, pease pudding and stuffing sandwich every day for lunch.

I use the rest of the chicken in a family meal, sometimes dh will make himself a sandwich with it.

I've been doing this for about 2 years straight. Every single work day - never given it a thought!

How weird am I?

I eat the same breakfast and lunch every weekday

DragonFly98 · 20/01/2024 16:04

Also you need to eat the chicken within 72 hours of cooking it so not on the Thursday or Friday lunch time.

That's just nonsense, though. Plenty of people keep chicken for longer than that and nothing happens to them.

NorthernGirlie · 20/01/2024 16:22

We're only a family of 3. Stuffing and pease pudding pad out my sandwich so I don't use loads. The rest in a curry or stir fry. I put loads of veg in the stir fry, veg and mushrooms etc if it's curry

Itsconvwniwnt, but is it healthy? I'm sure there's evidence that people who eat from 30 different plant sources a week have better gut health, I cant see how you'd get anywhere near?
Maybe go mad and add different fruits to your Oats, and make your chicken into different things. Like a salad, pasta salad, noodles, chicken soup. At least you're getting a little variety for not much effort?

NorthernGirlie · 20/01/2024 16:24

I don't get to the staff room 4 days if the week due to clubs, building moves so can't heat up a soup or noodles.

Salad or sandwich seems like the only option to eat in the classroom but salad takes bloody ages to eat!

SloaneStreetVandal · 20/01/2024 16:24

Not strange at all imo. I alternate tuna and wholemeal and scrambled egg and wholemeal for lunch.
I cook a variety of meals in the evenings, because my husband and daughter prefer a change. If I was on my own though, I'd probably eat the same thing every evening too (when I lived with my parents, my Mum would make me - at my request! - the same meal every evening 😂).

Seaside3 · 20/01/2024 16:26

Invest in a flask. It will revolutionise your lunch.
And noodles can be eaten cold as a salad.

SunSparkle · 20/01/2024 16:27

Apparently the most successful people in the world have very monotonous routines to what they eat for lunch. It removes a round of decision making from the day, and depending on your choices, can be healthier too as you’re less likely to make impulse decisions for high fat/salt/sugar foods on a whim. You carry on doing it if you enjoy it!

NorthernGirlie · 20/01/2024 16:28

@Seaside3 I bought a food flask and took pasta in it. It was minging by lunch time. I meant to Google what to use it for. It's languishing at the back of the cupboard

OP posts:
soupfiend · 20/01/2024 16:32

I wouldnt put pasta or noodles in a flask because they go all overcooked but certainly a curry or stew is good in it

NorthernGirlie · 20/01/2024 16:34

@soupfiend I couldn't put my beloved chicken in though - it'd be sat warmish all day.

I feel like it's the only thing that fills me up. When I took sandwiches or salad with shop sliced meats or tuna in I was always hungry by mid afternoon

I can't grab a coffee either so I'm usually craving caffeine and if I was hungry too I'd be murderous!

Also just to agree with other posters about this being a modern trend. Our ancestors would have had a very samey diet and if you go very far back they had the same meal 3x a day, every day, more or less/give or take

Previous generations weren't as well-nourished as we are now. Life expectancy was lower and people were shorter, partly because of what they ate (or rather didn't eat).

Bargello · 20/01/2024 16:35

I have overnight oats most days too, although I have it for lunch. I do mix up the recipe a bit though - raspberry and almond, or blueberry and raisin, or mango or whatever is kicking around the fridge.

I would think exactly the same thing every breakfast and lunch would be dull, but if it works for you?

Edited

Nothing wrong with a sandwich and like you say, its the quickest thing to eat, was just thinking about something warm if you were able to

Glitterybee · 20/01/2024 16:36

im with the previous person who said we need the sandwich details…

what bread? Do you have butter or mayo, or both?!

love a nosey food post 😂

Moonlightdust · 20/01/2024 16:37

Breakfast not so weird as it’s easy to get into the ritual of having the same everyday - I usually always have porridge but mix up the fruit and at weekends I might have eggs etc.
Having the same lunch every single day for 2 years straight is rather odd!

BreatheAndFocus · 20/01/2024 16:37

I usually eat the same breakfast every day and a similar lunch but with variations. I do this to save brainpower. However, every so often I make a point of eating something different every day for a couple of weeks. I do feel better then so I guess my body likes variety.

I wouldn’t eat leftover chicken from a Sunday any later than Tuesday night though. Food poisoning from that is awful.

WinterMarchesOn · 20/01/2024 16:37

NorthernGirlie · 20/01/2024 15:54

@WinterMarchesOn nooooo - I just pot them up on a Sunday! I add the milk the night before if I remember, or on the morning if I don't

They're the same whichever - not sure why they need to erm, marinade over night?!

They’re not the same if not left overnight! The oats swell up and take on the milk and yogurt and get creamy, making the liquid thick and delicious. If you’ve added fruit, the flavours meld and it’s a real treat in taste and texture. Oats with milk freshly added is just uncooked porridge! But if you like it, crack on. I’m glad you’re not just making a big pot of oat concrete on a Sunday though 😁

WolfFoxHare · 20/01/2024 16:37

soupfiend · 20/01/2024 15:36

Nothing wrong with eating chicken on Friday that was cooked on Sunday

What do you think the length of time pre cooked chicken is in terms of use by dates in supermarkets?

They often use preservatives though. And vacuum seals etc. I wouldn’t eat sliced chicken on Friday if I’d opened the pack on Sunday, either.

Bracksonsboss · 20/01/2024 16:38

It’s weird that you can make a chicken last so long. It’s gone in one meal in my house….and that’s with two vegans not eating it😂

CurlyhairedAssassin · 20/01/2024 16:38

GoodlifeGlow · 20/01/2024 15:08

its not great for your microbiome you probably don’t have a varied gut bacteria population which is what we need to build a strong immune system and keep our bodies as healthy as possible.

We should be getting 30 different fruit, veg, nut, seeds a week. If Out of 21 meals, 14 are exactly the same, you aren’t giving your gut much of a chance to introduce new beneficial bacteria by eating a variety of foods.

Where is the evidence for that? I don't believe it's true at all. We only have access to such a wide variety of foods these days due to imported out of season fruit and veg. Historically people wouldn't have moved far out of their local area, and would also have been tied to what was seasonally available. People's diets wouldn't actually have been hugely varied.

NorthernGirlie · 20/01/2024 16:38

@Glitterybee whatever bread DH brings in - he does the shop. I don't even think about it tbh, sometimes it's wholemeal, sometimes granary, sometimes wharburtons white sliced!

I have butter and sometimes mayo!

I'm similar. My taste buds look forward to the same breakfast and lunch flavours, though evening meal is always varied.

If I lived on my own I'd probably eat the same evening meal as well.

WolfFoxHare · 20/01/2024 16:40

In fact if you google it, every result says you should eat cooked chicken within 3-4 days of cooking. So even Thursday would be pushing it a bit.

My husband does this, it only irritates me as in it’s something I would find dull as ditchwater! I couldn’t even eat my favourite foods twice in a row without being a bit meh.

Totally off topic but.....

All my life I've said as dull as dish water!!! 😱😱 I cannot believe this! 🤣🤦‍♀️
