How do I get rid of these little fuckers? 😆not an AIBU but posting for traffic. I have small DC so can’t use anything harmful.

i have been using the dehumidifier to help with condensation as I know they like damp but keep finding them in the washing basket and under dcs bed. I know they are harmless but I want them gone.

please tell me if you have had any luck getting rid of them? What works?

thanks!

We had a full on infestation in the loft when we bought our house. They were crawling on walls and we found them in every room of the house (apart from the bathrooms, weirdly). I got a company to sort out the loft because we couldn't do it ourselves, and now I just Indorex our skirting boards every six months or so and I barely see them. Indorex is pretty hardcore stuff but it works like a charm and you only need to use it a few times a year. Would recommend (although I would keep kids and pets away and ventilate all rooms after treatment).

But yes, sweep/vacuum floors and clean surfaces etc to keep crumbs away. Keep using the dehumidifier and air out rooms. Seal all gaps in skirting boards etc. Cedar wood blocks can also help and they smell nice. 😊

😂@Lwrenagain we only have two teeny ones and they live in the toilet room. I only see them when I go for a nighttime pee, and yes they are bathroom buddies. They don’t do any harm and you know, biodiversity and all.

Same, we don't have many but I grew very fond of ours during my nightly wees when pregnant. It made being up every 7 minutes to pee more enjoyable seeing them just dicking about on the bathroom floor.

I stopped seeing one of mine and it turned out DP stepped on it "accidentally", bollocks, cold blooded murder.

If I'd have been well enough at the time I'd have staged a justice for Keith campaign 😁

therealcookiemonster · 20/01/2024 04:14

it's their house now. they won. Time to move on

Mumoftwo1312 · 20/01/2024 05:07

When I had these, I tried all the naice remedies like diatomaceous earth and various herbs and spices but in the end poison was the only thing. You can get a specific poison which is mixed with diatomaceous earth, for silverfish.

It only needs to be left overnight once, then hoover and mop it away, so I don't see why it should be unsafe for your kids. Do it when they're in bed, clear it up in the morning

I used to hate them until I read that they date back to prehistoric times and then I admired their pluck. They don't bother me now.

I love this worldview, I wish I could have such a sunny disposition

Still, they're so disgusting bleurgh. Poiiiiiison them!

I fucking love mine, dp goes fucking apeshit about them, he caught me giving them quaver dust and read the the riot act.
I told him that if I couldn't keep the silverfish I'd get a Shetland pony.

I won purely because we'd 100% be paying to feed a wee horsey had I not been allowed to keep my bathroom buddies as I call them.

I'd leave if I were him. I'm sorry, but this is batshit bonkers Grin

I told him you'd said this and he said, the CF, the silverfish are so low on the bat shittery he comes home to, they don't even compute ☺😂

JaneJeffer · 21/01/2024 06:59

I think woodlice make superior bathroom pets because they don't eat carpets

Lwrenagain · 21/01/2024 07:13

@JaneJeffer I used to be team woodlice but they just don't have the cute little "whoosh!" Of the silverfish.
Plus the name silverfish is infinitely cooler than "woodlouse".
If someone called me a wee silverfish I'd think, fuck yes, I sound like a rockstar, someone calls me a woodlouse and I feel like they think I'm in need of a shower 😂

Grimchmas · 21/01/2024 07:25

@Caswallonthefox spiders eat other pests, that may be why!

JMSA · 21/01/2024 07:38

Hoglet70 · 21/01/2024 07:51

@JaneJeffer team Woodlouse here too!

PurpleCar02 · 19/01/2024 21:24

They hate lavender, get some drops from Holland & Barrett and dilute with water into a spray. It won’t get rid forever but they will stay away for a while. Sadly the only thing that got rid of them for me permanently was moving house!

How did you get them to move house? Did you have to pay their estate agents fees? 😉

Londonrach1 · 21/01/2024 08:16

I love woodloose. They make amazing pets and very interesting to watch. Dd agrees and very gentle with them. Mil has been known to kill them until dd told her off. Now dd relocates a woodloose outside if dmil sees one...

AllTheChaos · 21/01/2024 16:37

Oh nooo, I had a bad experience with a wood lice as a young child! Have never fully recovered…

Lwrenagain · 21/01/2024 16:53

@AllTheChaos silverfish never would!

What happened??

SarahSays1 · 21/01/2024 17:46

Ant baits (in a child safe container, obviously) seem to do the job, As well as vacuuming all food away

FromHereToSomewhere · 19/01/2024 22:14

Amazing. They are kinda cute...but they eat carpets.

...and cardboard

DH caught me feeding the rats in the shed once. I bought them rat food from Pets At Home 😅
