Why doesn’t the country support having children?

Just seen an article on The Guardian about the 15 free hours for childcare for under 2’s and how the whole system is a mess.

I’m just starting to lose hope that this country doesn’t support working families anymore?

AIBU and need to think more positively, or have we screwed up massively by not supporting families?

The Guardian article which I read.

UK government’s free childcare scheme in disarray, charities say

Thousands of concerned parents reportedly struggling to sign up for flagship offering that starts in April

I was following this thread yesterday and today I found out that our nursery fees will go up 20% from February. So even with the 15 hours from April (which I was looking forward to in order to ease the pressure a bit) we will end up paying more than we are currently paying. It won’t be a second mortgage, it will be more than our mortgage.

Nursery places are scarce in my area and my dc enjoys this one, so no point trying to find something else. But I definitely don’t feel very supported today.

There will always be someone moaning

We are not over spilling! Fly over the UK and see how much of it is built on.

What we are lacking in is building houses on that land and the infrastructure and services to support it. That I agree with and I'm looking right at the Tories when I say it.

I don’t know why it’s the government or the tax payers job to support families. It’s families jobs to support themselves.

There is a huge amount more financial support now for nursery than there was 10 years ago. I was paying almost £60 a day then.

Having kids is a choice and should be made with informed decisions about costs etc , shouldn’t be made in the hope someone else will fit the bill!

This. I couldn't have put it better myself.

Got to get some female attention I suppose without having to pay for it.

The main ways of reducing climate change are

  1. reduce births / population
  2. stop using large animals for food.
  3. change ways of producing energy ( and stop using so much )

The world is overspilling. This has been widely reported for many many years ( this is not just about our tiny island )

There are too many of us consuming too much !

Genevieve29 · 16/01/2024 19:26

One of the biggest problems is that the lower the income, the more children people seem to have. No plans how to support them. Higher-income parents are, I guess, better educated and can figure out what is affordable and how to make contingency plans. OK - shoot me now!!

BooBooDoodle · 16/01/2024 19:28

It was a real kicker to us 12 years ago when our eldest was in nursery (back then they had to be 3 for the free hours) when the scroungy sod from school with multiple kids by different dads and no job arrived with 2 of her tribe with vouchers for free childcare. Ours was a private nursery due to me working in a school and son was home with me during the holidays which saved money but to see her turning up to a private nursery and getting free childcare for 2 ruddy kids when we were paying the equivalent of a second mortgage each month just for one child was a joke. She wasn’t using childcare for work as she had no job and was getting it all for free! Stupid over here was back working and contributing to society and trying to keep a roof over our heads. The second kicker was when DH got a promotion at work and my tax credit of £35 a month was stopped because we were 50p over the threshold. Working doesn’t ever pay it seems and the family unit isn’t respected whatsoever.

Ohmylovejune · 16/01/2024 19:29

I'm past the menopause, so don't worry. Your wish is my command!

I did have two although I'm past the legal return date now. They are 25 and 27 and don't appear to have any plans for children.

I'd be interested to know who is going to be working to pay their pensions and keep the economy going if their generation have no children? Assuming you don't like the idea of immigration either? (Although I suspect with climate change that will happen as people have to migrate)

As for not wanting green belt land built on that's different from overspilling.

And assuming it will be poorly built. It doesn't have to be like that. Again...I'm looking at you Tories!

Perhaps the free childcare should be more focused on getting people back to work and supporting workers and therefore only available for those working the hours that they receive the free childcare for.

It not right that workers have to pay and non workers don’t.

Redragtoabull · 16/01/2024 19:37

In the UK, we are all very fucking lucky to have the health benefits we have, however, childcare is extremely expensive and we need to rip out the 'many few' that exploit this, along with many other systems subject to exploitation. Fix up Gov!

The drivers of population increase in the West is people living longer & immigration. And a family with 6 kids in the Sub Sahara region has a much smaller carbon footprint that a much smaller family in the West.

So because another western country is shattered then us we should be grateful.

We have the highest childcare costs in Europe( article below). Ironically the goverment does understand that parents ( mostly mothers) not working to facilitate having kids is bad for the economy but as usual royally fuck up doing anything about it

https://www.euronews.com/next/2023/03/06/childcare-puzzle-which-countries-in-europe-have-the-highest-and-lowest-childcare-costs

i am not sure where these figures come from. I live in the Netherlands and it is just as expensive if not more and places are equally scarce. The main difference though is that it a lot cheaper for a second/third child etc if they are in nursery at the same time.
