To be annoyed that DH used my Christmas gift before I did

Just that really

He bought me a book for Christmas, not one I had asked for, more of one of his interests than mine but I would still read.

I haven't had chance to start reading it yet. Tonight I walk into the living room to see him sat reading it himself.

AIBU to say that he is out of order to have done so?

I could think of worse things

Lighrbulbmo · 14/01/2024 21:22

Yabu the words won’t wear out. Would you feel differently if he had asked first ?

NashvilleQueen · 14/01/2024 21:23

Sorry OP but I think he bought it for himself and he's just left it a couple of weeks

VainAbigail · 14/01/2024 21:23

I get that it is yours, but “out of order” to read a book?!

Pallisers · 14/01/2024 21:24

of course you are being unreasonable. He is reading the present he bought for himself - a book about a subject he is interested in and you are not. What do you expect him to do!

GalileoHumpkins · 14/01/2024 21:24

He obviously bought it for himself.

Lollypop701 · 14/01/2024 21:24

he bought it for himself really, and I would point it out!

LittleGreenDragons · 14/01/2024 21:24

more of one of his interests than mine

So he bought himself a present? That is why he's reading it before you, it's his.

Friendofdennis · 14/01/2024 21:24

That would annoy me. He bought it to read himself really and him reading it before you had the chance just confirms it

SunRainStorm · 14/01/2024 21:25

It sounds like he bought himself a present.

Mairzydotes · 14/01/2024 21:26

It's a bit cheeky, but the book doesn't lose any of it's worth because someone has already read it.

GenXisthebest · 14/01/2024 21:26

I'd be more upset about getting it in the first place (as it sounds like a pretty thoughtless present). I wouldn't really care about him reading it first.

rickyrickygrimes · 14/01/2024 21:26

😱😱😱 omg he broke the Sanctity of the New Book!!

That’s justification for murder in my family.

I’m outraged on your behalf.

This!

He owes you a Christmas present and I wouldn't be making no bones about it either.

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 14/01/2024 21:27

Just use it as an excuse for a shopping spree in Waterstones! Grin

NancyJoan · 14/01/2024 21:27

The book will still be the same! It’s not like he opened your biscuits or used your new bubble bath.

You haven’t looked at it in three weeks, he clearly fancies giving it a go.

Mumaway · 14/01/2024 21:28

Yes, you should be annoyed. I got a lovely selection of fancy coffee for Christmas, and discovered hubby had opened it and used quite a lot without asking. As mums we often get a bit overlooked at Christmas, so having your gifts taken off you stings a bit more.

Agreed!

BeeCucumber · 14/01/2024 21:28

I would burn it and then download a copy onto my kindle and then hide it. Reading a new book or newspaper that does not belong to you is a capital offence in our house.

DisforDarkChocolate · 14/01/2024 21:28

The unreasonable thing is him buying a present for himself and giving it to you

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 14/01/2024 21:30

Not so much a present for you then!

id laugh at DH & make some crack about stealing his new (whatever I fancied) as we appear to be present sharing!!

on a slightly serious note, did you get other presents, is he generally good at buying gifts? Or crap? Do you drop heavy hints/write lists/suggestions?

I am utterly crap at buying gifts. So a book on a shared interest doesn't seem too terrible, but he shouldn't be reading it first, without at least asking, and spoiling the newness!

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 14/01/2024 21:32

@Mairzydotes

it does. It's list it's new book feel/smell...

Mumofteenandtween · 14/01/2024 21:32

Have you ever seen the Simpson’s episode where Homer buys Marge a bowling ball with “Homer” on it?

RawBloomers · 14/01/2024 21:33

That would be a declaration of war in our house OP. First read of a book is sacred!

Though agree it sounds like the real issue and obvious solution is that he owes you a Christmas present.
