To be annoyed that DH used my Christmas gift before I did

Just that really

He bought me a book for Christmas, not one I had asked for, more of one of his interests than mine but I would still read.

I haven't had chance to start reading it yet. Tonight I walk into the living room to see him sat reading it himself.

AIBU to say that he is out of order to have done so?

OP posts:

It’s not your Christmas gift at all.

I bought husband three books for Xmas. He only reads on the loo. A slow reader a book lasts a couple of months. I buy him a new one when I see the bookmark is approaching the end.

I picked up one of the books and started reading it the other evening because he was watching hours of sports.

Now this is a whole other thread

Only reads whilst on the loo 💩 ....... 🤮

Grimbelina · 14/01/2024 22:12

Definitely cut out the last few pages and hide them.... and don't give them back until you get a new Xmas gift.

WinterDeWinter · 14/01/2024 22:12

HINBU to read it.
HWBU to buy it, instead of something you actually wanted.

Nooo - think of the pooticles! 💩

As someone who loves books this would horrify me. Its your property . He gave you it. Cant stand it when people try to read your book before you. Bad etiquette. I would be seriously upset.

Yep and if he turned the corner of the page to mark his place.....

Under the patio he goes!

ChiIIieB · 14/01/2024 22:28

I cant believe how many people would be annoyed at a book being read! Wow.

But I don't think it's just about the book being read, it's about the fact the book was one better suited to the DH and then read?

Minglingpringle · 14/01/2024 22:29

Ha! What a rubbish present! I couldn’t bring myself to really care though.

They're his pooticles 😂

He never read bar hobby magazines manuals. I read that reading was a good way to keep your mind sharp when you're ageing. So I started buying books for him. It's supposed to improve memory.

I mean that's not really why OP is posting or the post would have gone on at Christmas saying he got me a book he likes better. OP said she will read it so still a gift that she will use. I actually couldn't imaging caring that someone read a book before me!

pontipinemum · 14/01/2024 22:35

He bought that for himself!

wronginalltherightways · 14/01/2024 22:36

OP, have you asked him why he bought himself a book for Christmas and pretended it was for you?

kisstheblarney · 14/01/2024 22:37

@ChiIIieB straw that broke the camels back? You but me a shit present that more for you than me, then reinforce it by reading it before I do!

Suppose OP wants to start reading her present tomorrow? Does she have to ask for convenient times?

howdoesyourgardengrowinmay · 14/01/2024 22:41

God, the solution is so clear.

Next birthday, buy him something you want.

Simples 😁

ChiIIieB · 14/01/2024 22:44

@kisstheblarney entitled to my opinion, just like you are. I couldn't give a flying fuck if someone read my book, much much bigger things going on in life like my DH going through cancer treatment. So yeah he could read whatever he wants 🤯

Yes, Christmas was three weeks away. How long do you expect him to wait?

Granted, it would have been nice to have asked you first but there are worse crimes.

Sorry about your DH, but OP came on to talk about her own situation.

I'd no idea about your DH, I wouldn't have interacted with you if I had.

ChiIIieB · 14/01/2024 22:51

@kisstheblarney OP came on to talk about her DH and I've given my opinion just like everyone else has, which I am entitled to. Just seems crazy to me that anyone would care about a book being read, even before my DH got sick I still would have thought this way.

Guessing you don’t read books much!

londonmummy1966 · 14/01/2024 22:52

DH did this to me once buying me a Jeremy Clarkson book that he clearly wanted on the grounds that I watched Top Gear. There was a simple answer - read it (or in my case not as I was not interested) and immediately donate to a charity shop. Take it off him as its your book not his read it or not as you prefer and then get it out of the house so he can't.

tachetastic · 14/01/2024 22:52

pontipinemum · 14/01/2024 22:35

He bought that for himself!

In fairness I buy several Christmas presents for myself each year but I do address them to me, so I have something to open on the day that I actually want.

That said, this year was a good year with two of my kids getting me books I actually like, one by an author I'd never heard of. 🎄
