My Primark allows all dogs

Pribark24 · 13/01/2024 16:50

All dogs are allowed in my local Primark and it's really pissed me off. The store manager said he was really annoyed about it too, but had been told that the policy had changed.

AIBU to think that dogs do not belong in shops? There's not much room to start with!

Shrewsbury is a nightmare now for dogs. Shropshire council encourage it. They didn’t even respond to my email about dogs and allergies. Every time I go to Shrewsbury there are dogs in cafes, often having a go at other dogs. Last week a woman let her wagging tailed allergen laden mutt wag its tail over my legs in a restaurant and another time there was a huge dog who came in and it’s owner was feeding it at the table. I can’t get up and move mid meal and I had no idea that Alsatians were allowed upstairs in restaurants.

Justlovedogs · 13/01/2024 18:44

YANBU. I have survived over 30 years of dog ownership without feeling the need to take my dogs in shops. I've only ever taken one in Pets at Home once and that was because she had an appointment at the groomers! In my opinion, it's lazy dog ownership. People can't be arsed to train their dogs so that they can be left.

BobnLen · 13/01/2024 18:47

Because a lot of shops allow them, people then seem to think that is all shops, hence one in M&S foothall which I'm sure is not allowed.

Maddy70 · 13/01/2024 17:34

Why would a dog do that? Dogs know how to only pee outdoors the same as humans know they have to go to the bathroom

Yup because all humans always only ever pee in a bathroom. Not on trains, doorways, under tables at conferences, in the corner of pubs, where they're standing in a field at a festival in the middle of a crowd..... etc etc etc
(All places I have seen people, well men, peeing)

Livelovebehappy · 13/01/2024 18:48

I guess they’ve done it because they think it will bring in more custom. They definitely won’t be doing it because they love dogs. Probably something they’ve picked up in their marketing questions. I understand cafes and restaurants because a lot of people have dogs, and are out on walks and might want to call in for a snack/meal. Our local cafe would be empty on a weekend if they adopted a no dogs policy. But cant see why clothes shops would do it. There will be a business reason for it though.

I love dogs, but I don't think they should be allowed in shops (apart from assistance dogs). Not nice for non-doggy people and not much fun for the dogs either, I suspect.

My dog loves a shopping trip - it always involves lots of fuss and normally plenty of biscuits from the assistants Grin

FourChimneys · 13/01/2024 18:50

This I why I very rarely go to cafes or restaurants, only ones which clearly say dogs not allowed. It is also why I very rarely go into clothes shops. Seeing a dog lift its leg and pee on a rail of nightdresses in M&S while the owner was looking in the opposite direction was my limit.

For every dog lover the shops are welcome there is another shopper like me being repulsed and voting with their feet.

Pribark24 · 13/01/2024 18:16

Woman is anyone that says so to Primark

Yes but there would have been nothing potentially controversial about challenging these men, they just didn't want to or see the need

Who are you expecting to challenge them? The minimum wage paid floor staff? Would you want to challenge them? Did you?

BCSurvivor · 13/01/2024 18:54

I was in Fatface last year and a dog had a poo just inside the door!
Its owner was apologetic, made a big thing about picking up the poo but left half of it behind and walked off.

Portakalkedi · 13/01/2024 18:57

Vile. I don't get this at all. Another place for me not to shop in, along with all the cafes, hotels etc I no longer wish to give my money to as they allow dogs.

DollyDaydreamW · 13/01/2024 18:57

Running joke here, if the dog is slightly constipated, to take her to Pets at Home. Because she immediately shits as soon as she steps in that shop, every single time 😂

She also gets very interested in sniffing items there, around knee height, on all the displays. Which means that male dogs are definitely pissing up those displays. So they probably would in clothes shops too which is disgusting.

I love my dog but nah, she doesn't need to be in John Lewis. It's handy to take her in cafes sometimes though as she hates being in the car alone but there needs to be RULES (no pissing, no barking, no smelly dogs, no letting your dog come up to mine and upset her, and ABSOLUTELY NO PUTTING IT ON A CHAIR OR LETTING IT LICK CUTLERY/PLATES etc) As with most things there's got to be a middle ground.

Lovelynames123 · 13/01/2024 19:18

I like dogs, I've had dogs (in the distant past when it was completely normal to leave a dog home all day when you went to work) but I am getting really fed up of dogs everywhere. I own a cafe, we are not dog friendly inside as we are so busy it would be dangerous. We have outdoor seating and provide water and sausages yet I've had 1* reviews for not being dog friendly which is obviously hugely unfair!

ZellyFitzgerald · 13/01/2024 19:34

@HaPPy8

Whilst I do t think it’s great for the dogs, I can’t buy the argument that’s it’s unhygienic etc if assistance dogs are allowed. It’s either hygienic or not, not for some dogs but not others. So if assistance dogs are allowed?

Assistance dogs go through rigorous training to be signed off, including navigating shops.

But we're talking about any old dog going into a shop and as mumsnetters demonstrate by the numerous threads on here, there are a vast number of untrained dogs and ignorant owners out there.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 13/01/2024 19:37

I don’t think it’s possible for anyone to adore animals more than me, but obviously a side from Assistance Dogs that’s bat shit crazy not to mention completely unhygienic. Another thing to consider is what about those who have a phobia of dogs, they wouldn’t expect to be confronted by one in Primark of all places.
These top Superiors or Superiors Superiors make all these crack pot decisions while sitting in their Ivory towers. However, It’ll be the shop floor staff that’ll get moaned at.

SpacePotato · 13/01/2024 19:38

It's the owners that are the problem.

I can understand cafes, especially in places where the passing trade is a high % of dog owners on walking routes, but why the fucking hell would someone think it's a good idea to take a large slobery dog into a busy shopping centre or clothes shops?

Why cant they leave their dogs at home if they want to go shopping?

Lighrbulbmo · 13/01/2024 19:39

Yanbu. People are gah gah over their dogs these days. It’s a weird attachment and separation anxiety that owners have now. Consequently dogs are forced into the lives of everyone, everywhere.

43ontherocksporfavor · 13/01/2024 19:40

I’m a dog owner and agree. I was waiting for my husband outside Jones the Bootmakers with my dog last week and the shop assistant invited me in . Was so surprised and politely declined. Not a place for a dog.

43ontherocksporfavor · 13/01/2024 19:42

Just to add , I was in a dog friendly cafe recently ( outside tables would be my choice but none were vacant and the waitress showed us to a dog friendly area of the cafe indoors. I went in with my small dog. A man walked in with a massive Newfoundland with sticky drool all about its mouth. One shake and that would’ve been all over everyone’s flat whites. I made a hasty exit.

1990s · 13/01/2024 19:43

Went in the Hayward Gallery in London last weekend. Three dogs in there. Some barking. Hated it.

I have a dog and like them but this is way too far for me. On their website it says only assistance dogs.

Pribark24 · 13/01/2024 19:57

I guess we all need to complain and hopefully the tide will turn.

Whilst i don’t like dogs being in shops, the more dog friendly places, the more places i can take my cats!
Currently i take them out into town in their pram once a week for a potter about and a trip to a cafe. Whilst they will walk on a harness and lead, neither are particularly willing to do so outside yet.
We rotate between about 3-4 different cafes, and in all honesty I’ve observed the same thing in each one, my kittens will sit happily, most likely have a snooze and maybe get out for a bit of fuss, and a sneaky drop of my oat milk. All in all usually very relaxing for me.
The dog owners on the other hand don’t seem to be able to rest for a moment, as their dogs don’t want to be there, can’t keep still and constantly bother other customers too.

these are my kittens on our trip to muffin break this week.

Andthereyougo · 13/01/2024 20:55

Dogs everywhere today when I made a rare trip to town. Why? Why do dogs like Springers, Labradors and Vizlers who should be in parks or woods being dragged around shops? I’ve never thought I’ll pop out to buy some new clothes and take the dog , he’ll enjoy a look around the shops.

Misstabithabean · 13/01/2024 22:40

I was in Fatface and someone brought a dog in which started barking. The manager asked the owner of he could give it a dog biscuit!! He must have had a supply of them ready to offer to any dogs in the store. Really bizarre!

Keepingthingsinteresting · 14/01/2024 00:08

RotundCheese · 13/01/2024 18:16

I think the problem is that there are just WAY too many dogs in the UK. One in three households has a dog! That's just insane and totally unsustainable. I can only see it increasing, which means dogs will be accepted in more places, which means dog numbers will increase - the cycle continues.

Why is it up to anyone to legislate the number of dogs, and why is it unsustainable ?
People should train their dogs and look after them properly, but otherwise it’s no business of anyone else’s who has a dog.

Shellbenj87 · 24/10/2025 21:51

I always take my dog shopping 🤣
