My Primark allows all dogs

Pribark24 · 13/01/2024 16:50

All dogs are allowed in my local Primark and it's really pissed me off. The store manager said he was really annoyed about it too, but had been told that the policy had changed.

AIBU to think that dogs do not belong in shops? There's not much room to start with!

Men in women's changing rooms, dogs pissing on clothes, having to serve yourself everywhere and being filmed doing so?! Shopping in the 2020's sucks. I think I'll stick to online shopping.

Sounds about right ☹️

Notmetoo · 13/01/2024 17:23

Unless it's a support dog why on earth would someone take their dog shopping?
It can't be a pleasant experience for the dog and as you say it just adds to the crush in the shop. It would put me off going in

sorrynotathome · 13/01/2024 17:25

"I work in Next and even though dogs aren't allowed we have them brought in anyway. I had to clean up a puddle of dog wee a few weeks ago that ruined several pairs of trousers hanging on a stand."

And the cost of those ruined clothes will be factored into the prices we have to pay. Honestly, I think this country has gone absolutely bonkers regarding dogs.

MillicentRogers · 13/01/2024 17:27

Here I can take minute in
Screwfix
Hobbycraft
TK Maxx in a trolley
Wickes
B&Q
Petsathome

I would be interested to see if anyone else can confirm this change in policy. It seems like an unusual decision.

A Next store near us now allows all dogs inside. I only found this out when a St. Bernard nearly had me over in there last week when it crashed into me next to the knickers. Not content with that, the Shetland-pony-sized beast then shook its head and slimy, snotty slobber flew out of it in all directions, showering everything within spitting distance (see what I did there?). The custodian of the Shetland pony chuckled and said "Now then Roscoe, you need to watch where you're going in the shops, you're bigger than you realise".

Whilst at the checkout, a lady next to me was 'reporting' the dog's presence to the store manager. The manager advised her that branch policy was now to welcome any "well-behaved dogs in their store".

I love animals - a lot more than I love most humans, but non-service dogs in shops? Just no.

StopTheBusINeedAWeeWeeAWeeWeeBagOChips · 13/01/2024 17:29

I couldn't think of a more stressful way to spend a morning than taking my puppy clothes shopping, she would be drooling everywhere, get bored, start playing if I was trying stuff on, bouncing on other dogs.... I adore her, and most dogs actually, but clothes shops aren't the place for them.

ronoi · 13/01/2024 17:30

The problem I have with it is that many dog owners don't respect other people choice not to have contact with their animal. A shop for me is usually a safe space away from such encounters, I have seen the occasional guide dog over the years but they work and are focused and never approach people.

If they all control their dogs and keep them away from me, fine. But so many will allow their dogs to approach others. I don't want that.

Pribark24 · 13/01/2024 17:30

@Sebsaloysius that is absolutely awful and now has me fearful for all future shopping trips. Also, gross. Maybe if people are complaining, it will be short-lived.

I really love dogs and am a dog owner, but I don’t understand this obsession people have with taking their dogs everywhere (not assistance dogs of course). I wouldn’t take mine into any shop with me other than a pet shop, and don’t understand why anyone would possibly want to either. And as much as I love dogs I don’t want to buy clothing that has another dogs drool or hair on it.

Pribark24 · 13/01/2024 17:32

I don't know how many people know the town, but it has a large park in the town centre, so there's actually quite a lot of dogs about in the shops.

The dog-obsessed people will just buy a "service dog" vest on Ebay.

Maddy70 · 13/01/2024 17:33

The country I live in its law that dogs are allowed in shops. Really don't see the issue. It all works well here

Maddy70 · 13/01/2024 17:34

WithACatLikeTread · 13/01/2024 17:05

What if they cock a leg on the clothes?

Why would a dog do that? Dogs know how to only pee outdoors the same as humans know they have to go to the bathroom

Assuming their owners have taught them. I saw a dog peeing in St Pancras station concourse (which is inside) last week, have seen them peeing in the inside bit of garden centres and someone upthread said that she had to clear up dog pee in Next.

BobnLen · 13/01/2024 17:36

There are a lot of dogs in the shops in our retail park, some of the shops seem to actively encourage them, I saw one in M&S food hall the other day. It's near a dog walking area which doesn't help

FionnulaTheCooler · 13/01/2024 17:37

platinumplus · 13/01/2024 16:57

John Lewis is like this too. I don't want to be tripping over dogs and leads or being licked or buying clothing with dog hair on it.

But the biggest bugbear for me is that how is this a nice environment for the dogs? Bright lights, noise, lots of people. Someone once took their dog on the escalator and it cut its foot. Taking dogs in a shop like Primark is just 100% selfish.

I always think the same when I see people take their dogs to the funfair. Its always really loud and crowded, must be stressful as hell for the poor dogs, who in their right mind would take them there.

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/01/2024 17:41

My dogs wouldn't fit in any of their clothes, they don't have money to spend in shops either. They would rather stay away from shops.😂

ZellyFitzgerald · 13/01/2024 17:42

Maddy70

Dogs absolutely pee indoors, up thread I posted about dealing with this personally.

Also if you add in the stressful environment and lots of new smells then a previously well trained dog may pee in a place they wouldn't normally.

Theatrefan12 · 13/01/2024 17:44

platinumplus · 13/01/2024 16:58

Many retailers allow them now I think

Even more reason to stick to online then

Absolutely ridiculous policy.

soupfiend · 13/01/2024 17:49

Every bloody dog is an 'assistant dog' these days.

And I like dogs

Santiagopink · 13/01/2024 17:49

I was in pets at home for the vet upstairs once, with my dogs, but another dog that was clearly very ill had left little dollops of diarrhoea all down the stairs and down two of the aisles that it's owners had browsed. Despite the smell they were totally unaware of the trail they were leaving and i had to find an employee to tell them. I counted 11 dollops inside and 1 on the mat outside the store. One customer had already trodden in one. Can you imagine if it was a clothes store 😳

NotAnotherPylon · 13/01/2024 17:55

kisstheblarney · 13/01/2024 16:52

Here we go again......

Is nobody else ever allowed to complain about this just because other people have?

YANBU OP. There was a dog in the home ware department of a shop I was in last week, knocking utensils off a display and LICKING the crockery. Unless the dog needed to pick its own bowl or wanted a say on the family crockery, I'm not sure why it needed to be there.

Pribark24 · 13/01/2024 18:01

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!

SwordToFlamethrower · 13/01/2024 18:01

Great, so dogs pissing on clothes and getting their nasty hairs all over everything.

So sick of dogs everywhere!

TannedFrombirth · 13/01/2024 18:02

An my dislike for dogs grows even more...
