My Primark allows all dogs

All dogs are allowed in my local Primark and it's really pissed me off. The store manager said he was really annoyed about it too, but had been told that the policy had changed.

AIBU to think that dogs do not belong in shops? There's not much room to start with!

Dogs know how to only pee outdoors the same as humans know they have to go to the bathroom

Righty ho. I wonder why I had to take a cloth and knife to the cracks in my floorboards to clean up the wee from one of SIL's dogs? My floorboards were indoors last time I looked. There have been a couple of wee's on the kitchen tiles - not so bad. There was also a turd once. On the hall rug. It happens and I accept that but, seriously, don't pretend it doesn't happen.

OneMoreTime23 · 13/01/2024 18:04

I mean, Primark think it’s a brilliant idea to let men into changing rooms with women and girls, to the point it has its own form of voyeristic porn named after it.

Dogs are the least of my worries!

Bibbitybobbitty · 13/01/2024 18:06

They tried this in Silverburn Glasgow last year, was a controversial among shoppers.
Shops weren't particularly happy about it.Came to abrupt halt when a very pleasant dog owner let his pet poop in one of the restaurants & refused to clean up the mess, this was after several instances of puddles around the centre, which cleaning staff were obviously not happy about having to deal with.

Many years ago I worked in a newsagents where one of the regulars was allowed to bring his dog in. UNTIL it was caught peeing on the sweets.

True assistance dogs go through a lot of training that allows them to go places I would never take my dogs.

It's unfair to dogs to take them to places where they will suffer sensory overload.

Then there's the peeing issue as untrained dogs will want to mark where they've been. It won't be a torrent of pee so likely to go unnoticed but what happens if you buy a pee or slob-stained item that doesn't fit? Would you be able to return it?

I'm another that will continue to shop online now that dogs are allowed (and men are allowed in women's changing rooms). Glad to see I'm not alone.

The manager needs to sort out the changing rooms as a priority! Can't believe you're more concerned about the dog than the two men in the female changing room.

It’s company policy. All gender and female changing rooms. But anyone can identify as female, so…….

My young DD wouldn’t step foot in a Primark if you paid her.

PinkflowersWhiteBerries · 13/01/2024 18:08

Fairly certain my dogs would look upon a trip to Primark as a waste of a walk. Absolutely ridiculous. Let dogs be dogs, in dog- appropriate settings.

These were the bog standard old fashioned kind of men.

Yes I'm sick of it. Dogs welcome everybloodywhere. Why??!! Some people are frightened of dogs. In every cafe and shop. Owners so entitled . Was in a tiny gift shop before Xmas with my mum. A large dog came in wagging tail, nudging and knocking things over. We couldn't pass as it took up so much room. The poor owner was being polite. Selfish, arrogant owners. I have a dog and I love dogs, but they are dogs not human.

Well, putting lipstick and a dress on them doesn’t make them women either.

Woman is anyone that says so to Primark.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 13/01/2024 18:12

So common now that owners take their dogs shopping, personally I don't get it. Our shopping centre allows dogs so I assume the shops inside do too. Recently I've had a lively husky puppy trying to leap up at me whilst looking at fireplaces then a couple with a boxer blocking the aisle whilst choosing tiles. I like dogs but come on why do people need to take their dog to sort out these type of jobs.

letstrythatagain · 13/01/2024 18:13

That's just ridiculous! I own a dog and at no point would even think about taking her into a shop.

RotundCheese · 13/01/2024 18:16

I think the problem is that there are just WAY too many dogs in the UK. One in three households has a dog! That's just insane and totally unsustainable. I can only see it increasing, which means dogs will be accepted in more places, which means dog numbers will increase - the cycle continues.

Pribark24 · 13/01/2024 18:16

Yes but there would have been nothing potentially controversial about challenging these men, they just didn't want to or see the need

I get panicky in Primark within ten seconds. It's such an overwhelming shop (that I avoid at all costs, but sometimes my teen dd drags me in). I'd never subject my poor dog to that!

I must admit, when I saw three dogs in Waterstones recently I thought I might pop in with her some time, until I heard one low level unhappy whining and realised that she would probably feel the same way—tbh it's almost as busy as Primark.

RunsLikeaLittleFatDuck · 13/01/2024 18:19

I was at the theatre the other day and yes you've guessed there was a dog sitting on a woman's knee. Can't imagine it being impressed with Swan Lake.
Thankfully it didn't bark not sure if it pee'd I wasn't sitting near it.

TooMuchPinkyPonkJuice · 13/01/2024 18:19

I suspect this idiotic drive to allow people's slobbering mutts everywhere is to increase footfall in shops. It's done the exact opposite for me and my family.

Fairymother · 13/01/2024 18:22

takealettermsjones · 13/01/2024 16:53

YANBU, who wants clothes that have had a dog's nose smeared all over them

Better than clothes full of childrens snot. 🤷🏻‍♀️

dancinfeet · 13/01/2024 18:24

this is also really shit for people with allergies- my DD is very allergic to dog dander, it can make her very itchy and wheezy, but if it gets through broken skin like a cut can also cause anaphylaxis if it gets into her bloodstream. There is absolutely no reason for any dog apart from service dogs to be in a clothes shop.

cristokitty · 13/01/2024 18:27

I love dogs and welcome them anytime I see them but it's not good. People are allergic to dogs, they can't buy clothes covered in fur. I also have a friend with a fear of dogs. She's from a country where there are stray dogs with rabies. It's bad enough when she takes her children to the park but imagine not being able to shop.

Pribark24 · 13/01/2024 16:57

I've seen threads about dogs being in cafes etc and about people claiming dogs are assistance dogs, but I've never seen a thread about a major retailer openly allowing all dogs. Sorry! I'm really shocked, but also realise retailers are really struggling, but this is definitely off-putting.

Loads of retailers allow dogs and have done for ages now. Where I am:

Waterstones
Fat Face
WHSmith
Joules
Blacks
Garden Centres
Rohan
Weird Fish
John Lewis
White Stuff
Mountain Equipment
Trespass
Starbucks

It's really common.

Lovelylydia · 13/01/2024 18:34

Try and see the bigger picture. Whether you agree with shops and cafes allowing dogs in or not, these businesses have made the decision that it is more economically viable to do so. Times are very hard for many businesses and they don’t want to turn business away. I live in a densely dog populated area and if the shops didn’t allow dogs their sales would be heavily reduced as there aren’t enough non-dog owners to make up the deficit. People would then complain about empty shops and a dead town centre.
if you don’t like it, complain to the business involved.

Lifestooshort71 · 13/01/2024 18:34

I say give them the vote 🐕

takealettermsjones · 13/01/2024 18:36

Fairymother · 13/01/2024 18:22

Better than clothes full of childrens snot. 🤷🏻‍♀️

That's equally disgusting imo but I reckon it's easier to stop a child snotting on some clothes than it is to stop a dog sniffing them.

HaPPy8 · 13/01/2024 18:39

Whilst I do t think it’s great for the dogs, I can’t buy the argument that’s it’s unhygienic etc if assistance dogs are allowed. It’s either hygienic or not, not for some dogs but not others. So if assistance dogs are allowed?

CatSighs · 13/01/2024 18:43

I love dogs, but I don't think they should be allowed in shops (apart from assistance dogs). Not nice for non-doggy people and not much fun for the dogs either, I suspect.
