For ages I thought there was a poster called Tia. I always used to think it was a bit weird that they would sign their name....not very anonymous. Now I realise it means thanks in advance.
I am 45.

@vipersnest1

I don't know what envelope necked vests are supposed to do ?

They pull down
So if you've had a poo drama with baby, pull them down not over the head

I don't have DC so don't ask me why I have retained this information but can't remember my computer password

TheSilentSister · 12/01/2024 00:18

@wwyd2021medicine I'm with you! I always wondered what the fuss was about a bunch of marbles.

What? Where do they grow?? I’m 56 😂

They grow on these sort of spiky plants! I bought a little dwarf one for my grandmother once and she actually got a few mini pineapples off it. 😂

@Scrantonicity2

We've had the piggy, we've had the envelope vests, but weirdly not had the "side of the petrol cap on the petrol pump symbol" yet... can we get a bingo?

Oh I took great pleasure in explaining the petrol pump arrow symbol to a clueless looking husband about three years ago, by which time he was already in his 50s and had been driving since 17.

It's the little wins that count. ,

I was in my late 20's before realising why Noah took two of every animal into the arc ☺️

LORD, at the mice that came of the Ark!

@ClairDeLaLune - they grow on the ground.

@Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong can't help but add to this - "arctus" means bear. Bears live in the arctic. Antarctic means no bears.

The Greek "bear" derivation of Arctic refers to the northern constellations Ursa Major and Minor, not to actual bears. Antarctic means "opposite to the Arctic", not a direct reference to bears.

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 12/01/2024 00:00

WHAT???? I did not know this!!!!

I only learnt this last month when my SiL showed me. With a straight face, bless her.

I do remember a relative thinking for years that Celine Dion’s name was actually Via Satellite because she’d seen her on Top of the Pops but missed her name.

Palindrone · 12/01/2024 00:26

My friend was most surprised when I told her recently that the expression is "giving up the ghost" not "giving up the goat."

She's a creative writing professor and has had numerous novels published by a major publishing house.

Why a Twix is called a Twix

(Because it comprises of TWo StiX )

Arktos means bear, pole star and the constellations we know as Ursa.

....and the dooby dots on the side of cling film boxes that you poke in to make a life-changing cling film dispenser!

Nearly 36 and only realised this last week 🤦🏽‍♀️😂

Strawberrypicnic · 12/01/2024 00:33

I realised last year that K9 is shorthand for 'canine'. I thought it was just the name of a brand of dog harnesses.

2024GarlicCloves · 12/01/2024 00:33

I learned that cashew nuts grow out of cashew fruits (also edible) and that melons grow on the ground when I first saw both for real, in my mid-thirties 😳 I'd thought cashews were, you know, nuts. And that melons probably grew on bushes, I'd never asked!

Same!

I worked in record shops for years when I was younger and never understood why so many artists had the same name for their albums - eponymous.

RobertaFirmino · 11/01/2024 22:36

It took me a while to realise that a 'miniseries' is a mini series. I was pronouncing it in my head as 'min-is-eries' and thinking 'what the hell is that?'.

I did that too! It's exactly what I was going to write when I opened this thread.

Ah she's confused it with "getting someone's goat"! Everyone also confuses "safe to say" and "suffice it to say" but that's less funny than goats and ghosts...

FlamingoFloss · 12/01/2024 00:35

@PorridgeFace i didn’t realise this either and complained to my husband about them when our daughter sent them over with our granddaughter!! That nappy was not fun!!

So in the Uk - where can you buy cashew FRUITS and what do they taste like?

TheSilentSister · 12/01/2024 00:46

I've never worked out what HiFi stands for. Yep, I know it's a sound system but what?

Took me about four years to figure out what my daughter did on a regular basis at school in the ‘Icy Tearoom’. Envisaged some sort of playhouse or imagination corner. It was only as the years went on and she was evidently a bit old to be playing in such areas that I finally asked her.

’Computers mother. Typing and that’

😳

Edited

Love this!

starfishmummy · 12/01/2024 00:46

When I was a kid, I'd see houses with big signs saying Toilet. Seemed a bit odd. Except they said To Let and my mind was adding the "i". Mum soon put me right.

There is a chap on a local group I'm in that communicates by email and his email address is 'Welsh The Rapist @ XXXXX.com' which I thought was pretty obnoxious although he seems a very nice man.

One day I realised it was
'Welsh Therapist @XXXXX.com' 😩

Thank goodness I never said anything as he would have thought I was mad!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I was in my late thirties and in the middle of teaching a class of teenagers when I realised that mommy wasn’t having a torrid affair with Santa Claus.
