For ages I thought there was a poster called Tia. I always used to think it was a bit weird that they would sign their name....not very anonymous. Now I realise it means thanks in advance.
I am 45.

A friend thought gwesty was a really popular hotel chain in Wales until she realised the signs were bilingual and gwesty is hotel Grin

For years I thought Gwasanaethau meant Swansea and vaguely wondered why there were signs to it along the entire Welsh M4.

@Verbena17 I just don't think I actually thought about it 🤷‍♀️

Years ago before WiFi was a full blown thing I remember seeing "WiFi lounge" thinking it was pronounced "wiffy".
I remember thinking that place sounds cool, it sounds like a tiki/boho kind of place.

My mum did this. My brother teased her for ages, but I didn't know how to pronounce it either!

When I was a kid, my dad made us an amazing wooden sledge which had metal runners with measurements on them.He worked at a place that sold fabric by the metre.
It was only 30+ years later when I bought a sledge for my kids and it had no measurements on the runners did I realised they were never for measuring the distance you went on the sledge.

That’s funny - my dad made us a wooden sledge with metal runners - my God it went faster than anyone else’s.

Mid 40’s former English teacher, only quite recently realised that the phrase “captive audience”, eg in a conference room or in a car, meant captive as in held in one place and not enthralled, as in captivated 😳😬

I always thought you searched for something with a fine toothcomb. Thought a toothcomb was some ancient implement.

About 2 years ago it dawned on me, out of nowhere, that it's a fine-tooth(ed) comb, ie a comb with very close, fine teeth so nothing much could get thru it unseen💡

The accepted term in English did used to be fine toothcomb though. It's fallen out of use these days.

We've had the piggy, we've had the envelope vests, but weirdly not had the "side of the petrol cap on the petrol pump symbol" yet... can we get a bingo?

Oh and something about the dials on toasters, incorrect backronyms and TO LET signs...

....and the dooby dots on the side of cling film boxes that you poke in to make a life-changing cling film dispenser!

I found out yesterday that gherkins are pickled cucumbers ! I'm 49 and was told by my teenagers. Shocked!

When I was a child I thought the Sketchley’s “We drycleanest” had Latin onto dryclean - as in dulce et decorum est.

Bit random but....

Old street lamps were unused cannons from the wars, rolled out and lengthened to become steet lighting.

Can you please give the source for that???

Minglemangle007 · 11/01/2024 23:59

Was way too old when I realised that crimes against minors was so heinous because they were children and not, as I thought, large burly gentlemen who worked underground in coal mines.....

I didn't realise pull up nappies rip off so every nappy change I was pulling them down. Very messy with a wriggly baby. Couldn't understand why people thought they were so good. Doh!

WHAT???? I did not know this!!!!

@RadFs

I was in my early 20s when my friend said to me she always shops in the petite range. I asked her how ? as we are similar sizes and I don't fit petite!!? She then explained petite range is for short people. I always thought it was for people below a size 4/6 😂.

Also pineapples don’t grow on trees, but I don’t feel so stupid because most people are surprised when they google that one.

What? Where do they grow?? I’m 56 😂

What?! Also ESL teacher, I thought it made perfect sense with the enthralled meaning, pretty astonished at how I didn't know this.

The French pronounce it ‘wiffy’ so you’re not totally wrong.

Driving through ROI and wondering why there were SO many roads leading to 'Amach', thought this town must be pretty accessible from everywhere before copping on that 'amach' in Irish means 'exit'

Similarly, I drove from Berlin up to the Baltic coast and wondered where the huge town of Ausfahrt was and why I'd never heard of it.

And a colleague, who asked for help from a copper. He couldn't find his car abut it was on Eingangstrasse.

.... One way street!

I had the same misunderstanding about Ausfahrt when driving across Germany.

It also took me a while to realise 'Danke' on the bins meant 'thanks' and not 'bin.'

@vipersnest1

I don't know what envelope necked vests are supposed to do ?

IcakethereforeIam · 12/01/2024 00:15

There were some books I read when I was very young. One I remember was called 'Down the Bright Stream'. The author used the pen name 'BB'. When we were driving in the countryside I saw a pretty cottage with 'BB' by the door. I was convinced that was where the author lived. Didn't twig for ages because all the other such places had 'B&B'.

I thought the Elgin marbles were small round things that you could play marbles with
