For ages I thought there was a poster called Tia. I always used to think it was a bit weird that they would sign their name....not very anonymous. Now I realise it means thanks in advance.
I am 45.

@GerundTheBehemoth Wow. But then it makes me ask why chickens and ostriches can't fly 🤔. It's all messed up.

That ducks can fly 🙈. Only realised this at around age 39 😂

I had almost the opposite of this. I was about 37 when I discovered that gulls can swim. This discovery is immortalised in our family as "look at those big white ducks" said as I pointed at the river Ness while my mother dissolved in laughter. 😳

@Daisypod actually there were seven pairs of some types of animals despite this never being depicted in children's books or wooden play sets!

@Firecarrier but how much pampas grass?

Chickens can fly. Just not very far or high.

I learned that cashew nuts grow out of cashew fruits (also edible) and that melons grow on the ground when I first saw both for real, in my mid-thirties 😳 I'd thought cashews were, you know, nuts. And that melons probably grew on bushes, I'd never asked!

Cashew fruit is fabulous!

😧😱😰

Hm are you sure about that? I'm rethinking the whole rhyme now. I know most nursery rhymes mean something completely obscure but If a little piggy can have roast beef then why can't it go shopping?

In my fabulous ladybird books, the illustration was clearly a Pig happily carrying a wicker shopping basket as he trotted off 😁

@Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong can't help but add to this - "arctus" means bear. Bears live in the arctic. Antarctic means no bears.

I love this kind of information!

socialdilemmawhattodo · 12/01/2024 00:45

So in the Uk - where can you buy cashew FRUITS and what do they taste like?

I've never seen the fruit in UK
They are hard to describe in terms of taste, but yum!

We've had the piggy, we've had the envelope vests, but weirdly not had the "side of the petrol cap on the petrol pump symbol" yet... can we get a bingo?

Oh and something about the dials on toasters, incorrect backronyms and TO LET signs...

Yes!

jinyjo · 12/01/2024 07:40

I used to think there was a band called The Dashboard Lights, they did a fantastic song called Paradise. Used to love it when the DJ said next song would be Paradise by The Dashboard Lights

Can I raise you yellow dandelions and those gone to seed (dandelion clocks) being the same thing?!

There is a chap on a local group I'm in that communicates by email and his email address is 'Welsh The Rapist @ XXXXX.com' which I thought was pretty obnoxious although he seems a very nice man.

One day I realised it was
'Welsh Therapist @XXXXX.com' 😩

Thank goodness I never said anything as he would have thought I was mad!

Is his name Tobias Fünke? (For the arrested development fans out there)

I just realised last week that to reply to a PP you type @ and a list of posters on the thread is prompted. I thought you had to go to their post and copy and paste their name.

I know this is extremely silly but I only recently realised polar bears name literally means bears that live in the North Pole / polar area.

Well, you might think it’s silly, but the polar bear thing never dawned on me until right now 😆

scalt · 12/01/2024 07:48

While whiling away hours in church as a child, I puzzled over two things to do with organs:

There are only a few pipes there. How does it make so
many different sounds? (Answer: there are literally hundreds of pipes hidden behind the ones you can see. On some organs, those on the front are decorative, and don’t sound at all.)

You play louder by pressing the keys harder, like on the piano, right? (Not true at all!)

I was cured of these when I started playing organs.

I didn’t find this out recently, was 17 at the time. I was told that someone’s female pet had blood stained some soft furnishings/items in their home during heat. It just never occurred to me as someone who never owned pets, that you’d need to consider that they have periods too… then it got me thinking how do pet owners prevent their carpets or sofas from being stained in the same way humans use sanitary towels etc

Cats don’t have a menstrual cycles though, and most cats don’t bleed on heat, only some do a little and its not from the same source. Animals mostly have oestrus cycles which means they re-absorb their uterine lining. Only humans and some primates, a few bats and elephant shrews menstruate.

Auntieobem · 12/01/2024 07:49

This is a bit niche. On the A90 to Aberdeen there's a sign post to the Grassic Gibbon centre. Every time I drove past it I would think how fab it was to have a gibbon centre relatively near us and would plan for when to take the kids there.

Turns out it's not monkeys. Kids would have been very disappointed. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Grassic_Gibbon

What? Where do they grow?? I’m 56 😂

In line formation in the soil.
Same with melons.
We grew our own when living overseas 😋

Also pineapples don’t grow on trees, but I don’t feel so stupid because most people are surprised when they google that one.

Well you've taught me something new!! I am 43 and until today I thought they grew on trees Smile

And it’s called the Arctic because the presiding constellation is the Great Bear ( arctos in Greek)…..
I know this isn’t pedants’ corner , BTW.

As my dear old mum used to believe, “ a titbit of knowledge every day” 😊

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 12/01/2024 07:57

I always thought an acre was a lot bigger than it is, like huge compared to miles.

Used to work with a foreign company where my contacts email address was ukie@“companyname”. I thought they were called Ukie for around 10 years until I saw their email sign off as “Sarah” and I realised it’s Uk ie 😅So glad I never called them on the phone and asked for Ukie!

My brother thought Ausfahrt was a very big city for the same reason and a friend couldn't find her car but told the Gerrman policeman she's parked in Einbahnstrasse, one way street.

Someone already posted both of these, but it was themselves that thought Ausfahrt and a male colleague who talked about Einbahnstrasse.

Dogs also bleed when in season. And you can get doggy nappies specifically to protect furniture.

I just had to google this to find out why. I supposed it's better than thinking they're called 'man get out' peas.

Me too 😆
