If you’re in a stressful job how do you not let it affect you out of work?

Ive always admired people in stressful / busy jobs who seem to have a enjoyable life outside of work. Can anyone give me any tips?!

This doesn’t apply to all jobs of course, but for jobs like mine I just tend to think to myself “it’s all made up” which helps me get perspective. All these people running around like blue arsed flies to provide something which is fantastic, but a nice to have really (media organisation).
An old colleague of mine used to have the mantra “nobody has died, nobody has gone to prison” (which again cannot be applied to all jobs!) but really helped her get perspective on how unimportant it all is, really.

Exercise.

I get up at 5:30-6 several days a week and run or sea swim.

Home by 7 and ready to get DS off to school. Walk at lunchtime or gym, and another walk after work.

10 mins on the calm app to meditate

Not checking emails and weekends or late evenings.

I'm a happier more balanced person and more effective employee this way

For me, it helps to actually enjoy what I do and feel as though I'm making a difference. When I feel massively overwhelmed by 'all the flying objects' (everything from too much on my plate to dealing with other people's conflict), I remind myself why I got into it in the first place.

Agree with PPs about being ruthless about out of hours time too. They know I'm always contactable in an emergency but I've had to define what an actual emergency is, e.g something that genuinely cannot wait until the morning.
