Sacked for using 'N' word

I don't know how to copy link sorry but has anyone been following the story of the Lloyd's bank manager who was sacked for asking a relevant question in a so called anti racism training session by his employers but in his question he used the full 'N' word.
His question I believe was how would he be expected to deal with black employees or customers speaking to each other using that word.
The trainer was so offended by the word, she had to take 5 days off work. However, he got sacked.
He has since been awarded £500,00 but no apology from Lloyd's and no job back.
As far as we know, the ridiculous incompetent trainer is still employed.

I am close to this story but afraid to say how.
But will say that I'm losing sleep and furious more and more at this bank.

There would have been ways to describe the issue without using the word, so chances are he was looking for an opportunity to use it and upset without repercussions and it backfired

According to the report he did exactly that. Described the issue without using the word. The trainer then said they didn't know what he meant. He then used the word.

Caerulea · 08/01/2024 22:45

5 days off work is bloody ridiculous.

That said, I've managed to get to 45 without once saying the N word, not once. Not by accident, not on purpose, not 'started to then stopped myself'. Not. Once.

There's absolutely no need to say anything other than The N Word 🤷🏼‍♀️. I'm not a delicate flower, I swear too much & cunt is one of my favourites. But there are limits, that one & the F one for gay men.

Also... His repeated use of 'middle aged white guy' in the quote is sus AF.

Will admit to being slightly confused as to how dyslexia causes you to say the N word.

What was the original question he asked that wasn't understood and required him to use the word to clarify.

I mean the trainer asked for clarification here

Ok, I work for Lloyds. Every week there is a new minority project they get behind. Dyslexics may well have been the one the week of the racists course that Carl found himself on.

It's exhausting.
They contradict themselves week by week.
Different flavour different day.
Employees are sick to death and frustrated but terrified of speaking up for fear of losing jobs.
I'm sure it's all banks and industries.

Hell, I would use that word once for half a million quid (almost 10 years’ salary in his case) and be delighted with that payout with no apology required. He is definitely the winner out of him, the bank and the snowflake trainer.

As he has effectively been exonerated, he can now ride off into the sunset with his massive payoff and get a job with another bank 🏦

MyCatWoofs · 08/01/2024 22:48

Why wouldn’t he have just said ‘the n word’ instead of saying it in full? Seems very odd that he did that.

I’ve encountered people who love saying it whilst saying it’s a bad word they’re not allowed to say. Without fail they’ve always been racist idiots.

If you need to say it like on this situation to ask a question, or maybe to report what was said, you say the initial, not the full word, end of story.

Prawncow · 08/01/2024 22:48

I’m sure they’ll be queuing up to hire him …

Honestly? White people using the full N word, whilst whinging that they're only using it because some black people are using it, are generally unpleasant racists. There may be exceptions to this. I just haven't met one.

But that isn't what this man did he asked how to deal with it when other employees or customers used that word.

Dyslexia can cause disordered thinking and word blindness. My partner has it and often uses wrong words.

Depends how old he is . Half a million won't last if he is young . I only hope he negotiated a reference .

IClaudine · 08/01/2024 22:49

I looked up the case. The judgement says:

  1. The claimant was unfairly dismissed.
  2. The respondent subjected the claimant to discrimination arising from disability by dismissing him and not upholding his appeal.
  3. The claim for failure to make reasonable adjustments is not upheld.
  4. The claim for direct race discrimination is not upheld.

I wonder if 2 contributed to the high amount of the award. 4 is, um, interesting - he tried to claim that he was dismissed because he is white.

@CwmYoy What is the difference context between the UK and the USA? As a black woman born in the married to a middle aged white man also born in the UK I am not aware of this.

That would be tiring. They have to be seen to be doing the right thing. As long as its genuine then it's OK. I doubt it from a bank, though. ..

RafaistheKingofClay · 08/01/2024 22:50

I don't think the reference will matter if they google him and find that Telegraph article.

Agreed. It’s pretty easy to not say that word. I’ve known many dyslexic people over the years who have managed to not say that word either.

SpursFan2 · 08/01/2024 22:20

I see your point @WalKat (and I have to say I haven’t read the full story that this is about), but there are ways to avoid using the full word as it causes so much offence.

I’m not sure why the man couldn’t have just said ‘the N word’ instead of saying the full word - if he’d just said ‘the N word’, everyone would have known what he had meant.

I think part of it comes down to being professional and behaving well in the workplace. It’s a bit like if someone at work said a very serious swear word (e.g. c**t). It would look unprofessional and pretty rude if someone else repeated the full swear word rather than just say something like ‘the C word’, as most people know what that’s referring to).

But if you are attending a course on how to address racism, should this not be a safe space to describe language that you have to deal with others using in your daily life?

I do agree that he could have referred to "the N word" but I also strongly suspect the course leader encouraged people to share their experience. They normally do. To then take five days off work because of the trauma of hearing such language is ridiculous.

Does anybody know if this happened to coincide with half term holidays or the course leader's wedding anniversary?

SpursFan2 · 08/01/2024 22:25

@SisterHyster I did report accurately. Everyone knows which word I meant - it’s very clear which word I was referring to.

I had a trainer who used the phrase N word.....he meant naughty

TooOldForThisNonsense · 08/01/2024 22:51

I was wondering if your thread was about this case, I had read about it.

Whilst it is plainly unacceptable language I can’t help but think it’s pathetic that the trainer was so distressed they needed 5 days off work. I mean FFS

You’re finding your employer’s commitment to increased diversity and inclusion exhausting?

Bet you use the phrase ‘health and safety gone mad’ more than is reasonable, too.

The world is changing and old-fashioned bigotry isn’t acceptable anymore. Get on board or go retire to the Med where you can complain about the lack of a decent fry up. Although you probably voted for Brexit, so it’s Blackpool for your seaside home.

newnamethanks · 08/01/2024 22:51

Absolute bollocks. If I go into a training session and start throwing F and N and C words around, it's offensive and inappropriate. I'd expect to be marched to the door and told to leave and not come back. I'm not a white, sorry for myself middle aged male but a white, older woman. People like the whinging complainant to the Telegraph - was it Toby Young or James Delingpole? Privileged put upon whingers both. Just provocation. I do hope they dug up Laurence Fox for a comment, another badly used middle aged white man who likes to snivel that his privilege isnt as privileged as it used to be. Its SO unfair that I'm expected to consider other people's feelings.

Does he use racial slurs? Or just he just mix up words he’d normally use?

BusyMummyWrites01 · 08/01/2024 22:52

Lots of comments here saying he should have referred to the n-word, not used it. If you read the articles, he did ask the question intelligently and sensitively - he only gave the example using it in full when the DEI trainer couldn’t understand the question. Then, when they had a fit about it, they would not allow him to apologise. This was supported by multiple participants at the training. He was treated appallingly. I suspect his pay out is meant to recompense him for earnings until retirement age (he is 59) as he will be unlikely to get another job at that level now - but it does little to compensate for loss of reputation and the distress he has experienced. Lloyds should apologise.

Because he was repeating what a customer had said in the branch so the actual word was relevant and not racist in this situation.

I’m so glad he’s got a payout. What a ridiculous trainer.
