Sacked for using 'N' word

I don't know how to copy link sorry but has anyone been following the story of the Lloyd's bank manager who was sacked for asking a relevant question in a so called anti racism training session by his employers but in his question he used the full 'N' word.
His question I believe was how would he be expected to deal with black employees or customers speaking to each other using that word.
The trainer was so offended by the word, she had to take 5 days off work. However, he got sacked.
He has since been awarded £500,00 but no apology from Lloyd's and no job back.
As far as we know, the ridiculous incompetent trainer is still employed.

I am close to this story but afraid to say how.
But will say that I'm losing sleep and furious more and more at this bank.

There was just no need for him to say the word, there never is. He could just as easily have asked his question referring to it as ‘the n word’ which is surely what most people would do?

Oh come on, in this context, completely fine. Even the most offended should be able to see this.

fixingmylife · 08/01/2024 22:34

@Theunamedcat. Really good point. I would like to know the answer as I am sure the people that work in that bank would too. Maybe it would have been better handled in a more sensitive way from the bank and lessons need to be learned as its embarrassing for the bank to have this sort of publicity

Hollyhead · 08/01/2024 22:34

I think judgement should be reserved on the trainer, they may have been black themselves and subjected to all sorts of other racism within the session which is why they took time off (just read some of Nova Reid’s accounts of training to see how pernicious the racism in edi training can be).

However I agree with both that there is never any need for a white person to use the word, but also that given the context, it wouldn’t strike me as gross misconduct either. A clear warning would have saved Lloyds an awful lot of time and money.

Superduper02 · 08/01/2024 22:35

The trainer is a melt. The employee is an idiot. Safe space or not, did he really have to say it?

Ladybughello · 08/01/2024 22:35

I don’t have a Torygraph subscription but the headline “White middle-aged men are ‘bottom of everything’ says bank worker sacked over N word” doesn’t sound promising 🙄🙄🙄

At work: See all - Hear all - say Fuck all. Go home .

The tribunal found that he said the full word because of a disability. Tbh though I think that even without a disability, it’s ill-advised but it’s not gross misconduct. It concerns me a bit that there are some words considered so heinous they can’t be said in any context. They’re words, they won’t literally hurt anyone.

What I find most astounding is that Lloyds doubled down even to the point of appeal, incurring enormous legal costs, in a case that is obviously very borderline. Why don’t they go for some real racism?

Yes he was dyslexic , plus he had tried to ask the question without using the word . He had an unblemished record and it was in a training session . Seems completely out of proportion.

fixingmylife · 08/01/2024 22:36

I think it goes to show that people are extremely offended by the word and for very good reason. It's offensive in its connotations and history and what it meant throughout history. It can't be just erased. We have to be sensitive about it. Really we do.

You said "I am close to this story but afraid to say how" but you have only just heard about it? Can you explain what you mean by "close to this story"?

Alicewinn · 08/01/2024 22:37

It was a strange choice for a white man to use it with presumably a black trainer?

About half a million quid for wrongful dismissal seems to be what he deserved in that case.

Having said that I do suspect the guy is a total nob.
a) because anyone with an ounce of common sense would have not used the word and said 'n word' in that situation.
b) anyone who uses the 'woe is me I'm a middle aged white male and being discriminated against' argument generally is.

Walker1178 · 08/01/2024 22:39

Honest thoughts? He probably didn’t need to say the full word but seriously, a trainer delivering a course on racism to be so traumatised upon hearing it that they had to take a week of work is just insane. I’d say they were both unsuitable for the role they were employed in

VanGoghsDog · 08/01/2024 22:39

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 08/01/2024 22:18

If he's been awarded half a million quid for wrongful dismissal, it would seem chances are he wasn't doing any such thing.

I don't know the case but I can assure you noone has ever been awarded half a million quid for wrongful dismissal. Certainly not a bank branch employee. And that claim would have to go to county court anyway, not the tribunal .

Superduper02 · 08/01/2024 22:39

Also, a separate point but in my view no-one should be using the N word. The end.

He was awarded £500,000. That's a massive payout from a bank!

eurochick · 08/01/2024 22:41

If you read the story he only used the term when the trainer claimed not to understand his original question (which did not use the term). And then he immediately apologised. So it doesn't sound like he was looking for an excuse to say it. If he was he would have included it in his original question.

steff13 · 08/01/2024 22:41

SpursFan2 · 08/01/2024 22:09

How is the trainer ridiculous and incompetent? That seems like a very harsh judgement. The N word is extremely offensive because of its history and cultural connotations.

If she's that offended by that kind of language, maybe anti-racism training isn't the job for her. Those types of words must come up in the course of her job.

It’s pretty hefty

It's in the telegraph.
The Conseravtive Councillor has used Dyslexia as his defence........

"“I feel very discriminated against,” he said. “I often wonder if I wasn’t a white middle-aged male would I have had to go through everything I went through. There is no way of telling. But when I talk to my friends – and as you can imagine a good many are white, middle-aged and male – we all agree that is the worst thing you can be right now. You are bottom of everything.”

Gosh I could hear the tiny violins playing in my head as I read this 😂

fixingmylife · 08/01/2024 22:43

I agree that nobody should be using the N word. It is extremely offensive.

This reminds me of the story about the people who gained all that publicity for displaying a certain type of doll in their window. I don't know why, but it does. It's different, obviously but I don't like the idea that racism is on the increase in the uk. We don't want to become like America. Let's remember that.

StopTheBusINeedAWeeWeeAWeeWeeBagOChips · 08/01/2024 22:43

I have dyslexic kids, and one with tourettes, they would never inadvertently blurt out any word that wasn't already comfortably in their vocabulary.

This bloke sounds like a total bell end, he was comfortable using the word, then cried discrimination when he said it in the wrong setting, and now is whinging that the poor middle age white men are the bottom of the pile. He sounds desperate to be oppressed.

Prawncow · 08/01/2024 22:44

It wasn’t until 1968 that it was made illegal in the mainland U.K. to refuse housing, employment, or public services to a person on the grounds of colour, race, ethnic or national origins. Thankfully most of us have moved on.

fixingmylife · 08/01/2024 22:45

@StopTheBusINeedAWeeWeeAWeeWeeBagOChips I'm inclined to agree with you. And he got a huge payout as well.
