Beside myself - DH in hospital

Posting here for traffic. I'm a first time poster, but been on MN for years.

My DH have not been feeling well for the last couple of days. Had intense abdominal pain for nearly 30 hours. Yesterday he agree to go to A&E (which is a feat on itself). He got seen and left overnight waiting for a CT scan to rule out either appendix or gallstones.

CT scan this morning and his appendix is inflamed, there's also something "they can see" which might signal a small bowel perforation.

DH went in for surgery at 2.20 this PM. Been ringing his ward since 5 PM to see how he's doing, but apparently he is still in recovery.

My question, I suppose is: does it take that long to be in recovery? Every time I ring his ward no one can tell me anything. I'm making myself sick with worry, I can't eat, I can't move. All I want to know is if he's okay.

I feel very stupid posting this, I really do, but I don't what else to do.

Just read the update, so pleased he is ok. Enjoy your visit tomorrow

As promised, an update: he is fine and hungry!

Surgery took longer than anticipated, his appendix was close to burst. No word yet on potential bowel perforation, but judging by what he said, I don't think that was the case. He should be able to speak with surgeon tomorrow morning.

I offered to go see him for a few mins, but he is exhausted, with the exception of the odd couple hours of sleep between waves of pain, he has been awake since Thursday morning, so tomorrow morning I'll be there with him.

I feel inmense relief he is okay. He's never been sick before, he's a 40-year old man 6"6 and the picture of health. We come from fairly healthy families and surgeries are a rarity. I've been with him nearly 20 years and he is my world.

Thank you, inmensely for all your replies, I have read them all and I am so grateful for the sanity check and the understanding I found here. I'm going to get some sleep and more dog cuddles, will read you all again tomorrow. Thank you ❤️

Great news... when I read your OP my immediate reaction was "appendix and nothing else" - glad I was right! I was a teenager when mine went... it was agony, but within a day or two I was itching to get out of hospital and well on the mend.

So glad your OH is ok! When I had my appendix out I think my OH was ringing the ward and panicking because they couldn’t tell him anything.

Hope his recovery goes well.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 06/01/2024 21:51

Glad he’s okay, time for you to rest now too.

My very health DH had similar just over a year ago, sudden onset of ill health and after being diagnosed with food poisoning, constipation, he ended up with emergency surgery after vomiting blood. They thought it was cancer for one fateful night after CT scan and before the surgery when they established it was (just) an acute bowel obstruction and he had part of his bowel and also his appendix removed and as it was very inflamed.

His time in recovery was so much longer than I anticipated and the most stressful time of my life. He’s fine now but recovery was slow. Hope your DH recovers well and is home soon.

Mostlyoblivious · 06/01/2024 21:52

Great news. Hope you both have a rested night

Andthereyougo · 06/01/2024 21:53

Great news.
Wishing him a speedy recovery.

olympicsrock · 06/01/2024 21:55

sounds like no Bowel perf and he should make a good recovery.

So pleased to see your update. Hope you get a good sleep too. Hope you get some answers on what caused this soon.

Not meaning to derail OP's thread but I have to ask why you're calling them 'Guardians?' I'd be annoyed if a HCP referred to me as my own child's 'guardian' when I'm very much a mother

Oh for heaven's sake, how petty are you? Does it really matter? They didn't refer to them as the Antichrist - and this isn't about you.

OP, sending very best wishes for some good news soon and hoping your husband makes a speedy recovery. He'll be in good hands. 💐

Really glad to hear hes ok OP.

Now it's time to look after yourself. Eat, and try to sleep. He's in safe hands, so you can relax now.

NoraWaves · 06/01/2024 22:23

When my son had that the operation took 5.5 hours. I was waiting on the children's ward next to the space for his bed, so I'd have been waiting longer for them to wheel him back then call me I expect.

gemloving · 06/01/2024 22:25

I'm glad all is ok OP. Shows you love him and care. Sending hugs and I hope your husband recovers xx

TigerJoy · 06/01/2024 22:26

Thank goodness, I'm glad he's ok.

I hope you sleep well - look after yourself.

Crucible · 06/01/2024 22:32

Oh that's great OP, and at 6 feet 6 he will be trying to fit comfortably on a hospital bed I imagine, poor soul! Hope he makes a quick recovery. Best wishes

AdoraBell · 06/01/2024 22:54

So glad to see your update, hope you can sleep tonight.

I was going to say this too but then realised visiting time is over. Is it different for post op patients?

When my DM had open heart surgery, we were there waiting the whole day. She didn't get to her room until night but we were allowed to go in and see her, even though visiting hours were over.

Have the rules changed since Covid about being able to wait in a waiting room when a family member or friend is having surgery?

Nanaof1 · 06/01/2024 23:53

@ThomasTheTwerkEngine
So glad to hear it all went okay and there was no bowl perforation.
I am sure you are relieved and will like going to see and hug him tomorrow.

I hope you can get a good night's sleep tonight.

Ormside · 07/01/2024 00:31

I've had a perforated bowel. It was all rather dramatic I was rushed straight into theatre and in surgery for over 8 hours, on life support in ICU for a couple of days, three weeks in a HDU, then home a few weeks later.

Joeslaol19 · 07/01/2024 00:35

Glad all ok 😊

Fullofxmascbeer · 07/01/2024 01:09

What a relief for you.

Themountainwithsnowonit · 07/01/2024 01:14

That's great news OP. I hope you both sleep well and he recovers quickly Flowers

Fraaahnces · 07/01/2024 01:32

Hi @ThomasTheTwerkEngine - I know he is fine and the fear of waiting to hear from him. My DH went through exactly this a few months ago. He said that he felt better two days after the surgery than he had in months, so suspected he had a low-grade infection cooking up for a long time. He had slight pain in the incision area for a week or so but bounced back very quickly. I hope you find this reassuring.

DreamTheMoors · 07/01/2024 03:39

My surgery was delayed from 2pm till 7pm on a Friday and when they finally wheeled me down, they went sooo fast and then took me inside the operating room and the anesthesiologist had the needle in my arm in about 2 seconds. I said, WAIT WAIT WAIT will you please ask the doctor to make my scar small?
And the next thing I remember, I was back in my room with a nurse and a machine recovering because the recovery room was closed.

FrancisSeaton · 07/01/2024 15:28

Hope your DH is recovering well today
