Shit, I’ve just bought men’s shoes

Bought them online from a well-known department store with a very nice discount in the January sale. They’re Kurt Geiger, a brand I like, and I wanted them for work- always looking for a smart flat.

They arrived today and I tried them on. A little roomy but not bad.

Jusy tidying away and spotted they’re men’s shoes!
No wonder they were cheap- can’t imagine much demand for men’s size 6.

Pic is of the ad on the website. I obviously didn’t look too closely 👀

So keep (YANBU) or return (YABU)?

I recently discovered men's trousers and shorts. OMG, the pockets.

I'm particularly fond of workmen's trousers which are a fraction of the cost of posh women's cargo pants. And have actual pockets. Did I mention the pockets?

Fuck the patriarchy forcing us to carry handbags and wear uncomfortable shoes.

Are you 6 years old? No such thing as men’s and women’s clothing, wear what you want.

Are you always this angry?

Also- I’m 5’ 11” and quite a heavy build. I just don’t want to look like a dude with long hair.

I think I’m harking back to secondary school in the 90s when a girl who was the same height as me had a size ten foot and had to wear men’s shoes- like, proper Clarks lace-up brogues with shiny toes. These were the days before internet made things much more accessible.

Christ, they’re comfortable.

I get where you are coming from. I'm your height and lanky build and although my feet are 7.5 (8 if no half sizes) when I was a teen many women's ranges stopped at 6 or 7.

Being pointed at the men's ranges with the "look" from shop assistants or the endless comments about your height can make the average teen quite self conscious about wearing men's shoes - its hard to throw that off.

If they fit and are comfortable then keep them. I find that shoes made for the man's foot shape just don't fit me but if they did I'd happily buy them if I liked the style.

Regarding Is this why men rule the world- comfort? - the other way around I'd say. Men have dominance so don't need to truss themselves up in tight pointy heels and clothes.

My top favourite pair of shoes came from the men's section. They were on sale, my size (and my feet are slightly on the wide side, so a lovely fit), and really comfortable. They're waterproof and have a great grip, but don't look like walking boots. They're also wearing amazingly well.

booksandbrooks · 06/01/2024 10:17

I buy men's 6's as they're wider

Jules131 · 06/01/2024 10:22

I did exactly the same with Kurt Geiger boots. Two pairs, size 6, great price (bought online from Debenhams). I hadn’t realised they were men’s either! A few years ago now. I collected them from Debenhams Manchester before catching the train home. Vaguely dramatic episode when I got off and realised I had left them on the train - my husband helped me catch the train up by driving to a station further down the line, and the lovely conductor lady passed them down to me. Woohoo! Then the disappointment when I realised they were men’s. I tried wearing them but unfortunately didn’t find them comfy so they ended up going to charity. If they were comfy I would have definitely worn them with pride!

Nothing especially manly about them. I’d keep them

Yes! Keep them

Itsallsostressful · 06/01/2024 10:29

PurpleQualityStreetDress · 06/01/2024 10:35

🤣 i have been buying men's stuff for years, shoes, socks, deodorants, razors, bags, wallets....

IreneGoodnight · 06/01/2024 10:42

Cool shoes. To me they look more like women's than men's in any case.

educatingrati · 06/01/2024 11:14

Always buy men's shoes, then again I have paddles on the end of my bloody legs, long and wide, if my toes were webbed they'd be perfect flippersGrin.

Grimbelina · 06/01/2024 11:20

My friend always buys from what she describes as the 'gay cashmere' section in TKMaxx - brightly coloured smaller sized in the men's section, usually heavily discounted.

lesdeluges · 06/01/2024 11:26

They look great. I am a frequent buyer of men's clothing, particularly jackets and zip fleeces/gilets. They all have the holy grail of inside pockets, and fit my long arms too.

Those shoes are fab and if you are bothered, no one could tell if they are men's or women's IMV. In fact they look a hell of a lot better than a pair of pink stilettos size 10 would look on a man surely!!

HoneyButterPopcorn · 06/01/2024 11:33

This and decent pockets.

Scampuss · 06/01/2024 11:45

As long as you wear them on your feet and don't try and wear them on your ovaries you should be ok.

I mostly wear unisex shoes so I don't have this worry.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 06/01/2024 11:48

They might be a little wide, and it’s not good for your back to wear shoes that don’t hold your feet properly.

zingally · 06/01/2024 11:58

TBH, I'm not surprised you assumed they were womens. They are quite feminine.

If you like them, keep them!

zingally · 06/01/2024 12:00

And for what it's worth, I buy mens clothes all the time - especially t-shirts. I have a long body a want a t-shirt to cover me. Plus they come with "proper" sleeves, and not those little cap sleeves that just bunch in your armpits!

Aliaolo · 06/01/2024 12:03

They don't scream "man" to me, they look quite unisex, leaning more to the feminine side, to be honest! If they fit, you like them and they were a bargain, keep them.
I prefer buying men's t-shirts and hoodies when I can. Due to my height a lot of women's clothes come up short and end up looking like crop tops. 😂 I do the same with joggers, unfortunately other men's trousers look weird and baggy at the top so anywhere with a tall range gets my custom instead!

Hankunamatata · 06/01/2024 12:06

I like the shoes. Brogues and others style shoes have gone pretty unisex

I always buy men’s deodorant (nicer scent), and razors (much cheaper and better quality).

Yes THIS!

Again my DD hates those tiny sleevelets. She and I both have men's Levi's T shirts - also much nicer colours, blues and greens and soft tones.

Loving "gay cashmere" @Grimbelina

CharlottePimpernel · 06/01/2024 12:53

I always buy men's shoes for work- I'm a cleaner and out very early when it's icy in winter and always walking on wet floors.
The best non slip shoes I've ever had, with furry warm lining and sensible fastenings, are men's from Shoezone. I can walk across ice like it's nothing. So cosy. They're the Hobos ones if anyone's interested.

sueelleker · 06/01/2024 12:55

You're lucky to find men's in a 6, they usually start at 7. I prefer men's, as they're a bit wider; shoemakers seem to think all women have dainty, narrow feet.
