Is it ok to drink wine every eve?? I have a glass , sometimes 2 every evening and I love it, it makes me happy. Dh says mental health more important so if it makes me happy I should just do it. I am a healthy 40 something with a professional career. I just love wine.

It IS a slippery slope.
Im not saying youll slide down it but its a habit, habits dont take a lot to turn them into an addiction.

Curious as to how you get 14 glasses of wine out of 2.5 bottles? 😆
Did you mean magnums of champaigne?

Whatthefnow · 08/01/2024 03:05

Well it can't be great for you.

CrabbiesGingerBeer · 08/01/2024 07:26

I didn’t think the amount was that excessive (too much, yes, but easy enough to cut down) until the OP went into a blind panic at the idea of not drinking.

She posted (in order):

  1. My husband thinks it’s OK
  2. Where does 14 units come from anyway?
  3. Life’s boring and lacking sparkle without wine
  4. The French drink loads
  5. 14 units isn’t even accurate
  6. Other people have bad health habits (listed out).
  7. There are lots of bad things in life not just wine
  8. 14 units is an arbitrary made up number - she might as well smoke weed or shoot up heroin
  9. In Spain, she’d be under the limit
  10. Denmark has a different limit
  11. She’d never do dry January as it’s very bad for you health-wise to stop for a month then start again.

The sheer number of justifications and whataboutisms culminating in a claim that stopping drinking is bad for your health (which only applies if someone is physically dependant on alcohol) suggests to me that while some people may be able to drink this much without an issue, the OP already has a problematic relationship with alcohol.

Edited to say: In which case, not drinking two days a week means nothing as she is still alcohol reliant, just increasing the time between drinks.

Absolutely

If you were not able to do it for one night, two nights longer - how would you feel ? That's your answer.

MangshorJhol · 08/01/2024 08:48

But eating a bar of chocolate every day or doing weed is not a good thing? I don’t think anyone would claim it is.

My dad drank every evening and when questioned would always say ‘but in X country they do this.’
And on the days he didn’t drink was slightly grumpy and bad tempered.

If you need wine for your MH then no matter how little or how much maybe that fact itself needs some introspection. So if I used say shopping (aka a not physically harmful activity) for my MH. I didn’t spend much but without that semi daily purchase high my life was dull, I would stop and interrogate why.

Um, the only person showing ‘rage’ seems to be you. Strike a little too close to home did it?

I'm Muslim and therefore a non-drinker so no, but that was an extremely defensive answer so I would take a quick look at yourself on this one sweetheart

Sure. Nice drip feed. Have you ever heard of DARVO? Because you seem to be a classic case.

Waitingfordoggo · 08/01/2024 10:11

Loving the pass agg ‘sweetheart’. Why has this upset you so much @25yearstilretirement?

I’m not even sure what I’m supposed to be defensive of? I’m not the one arguing against government guidelines set by qualified medical personnel.

Also, I’ve not changed my opinion that the OP’s attitude to alcohol is problematic and @25yearstilretirement getting even more passive aggressive in her response certainly hasn’t changed my view of her weirdly confrontational attitude.

Just popped back to say it's not only the major effects like neuropathy, liver failure etc.

It's the little things that often never leave you - heartburn, gastritis or indeed an ulcer.

My gastritis has flared up today out of nowhere. Desperately trying find some Omeprazole or Lansozeprole (? Can't spell that one!) as it's misery!

Mamabear2424 · 08/01/2024 16:56

Update - had no wine yesterday was not bothered at all none tonight either, dont have any in the house and will treat myself to glass later in the week :)

That's great news.

If I'm looking for a treat these days, it's a Domino's 🤣 Stomach says no at mo 🙄.

Cooked a gorgeous Butter Chicken today too. I swear teen DD has fallen asleep upstairs.... I went up... My feet don't lend themselves to Ninja these days 🤣 (Clunk Thud!) No answer through her open door. Bless her she didn't look well coming home and I'm wondering if my random gastritis is that...

Mamabear2424 · 08/01/2024 17:05

Well done @Mamabear2424 that's great.

HardcoreLadyType · 08/01/2024 18:03

Well done, Mamabear!

I had a wake up call many years ago - something my son said to me - and cut down my drinking (which was probably about the same level as yours). I used to really want to have that glass in the evening, but now it feels like more of a treat, because it’s only on the weekend, and it’s more considered, rather than being a habit, so I enjoy the drinks I do have much more.

That's fantastic to read!

You'll crack it no problem.

Don't be me! X

Well done OP. I’m enjoying Kombucha (in a nice glass) and the Trip drinks. I also find once I get past the witching hour (6-7.30) then I don’t fancy wine anymore. It takes time. I used to have 2 days off. Then got to 3 and now I only drink Fri/Sat and much less.

I think if you build up the days slowly then you don’t feel like you’re depriving yourself as you end up wanting the days off as you feel better (if that makes sense).I was in a complete cycle of drinking Weds-Sun then not really recovering before I started again.

Serv · 08/01/2024 19:29

I love cooled liquorice tea in the evenings, if I'm not drinking wine. It has a (sort of) complex/woody/dry/nuanced mouthfeel that suits me far better than many other drinks.

Why would you bother posting on a thread about low level alcoholism when you don't drink?
Or have you struggled with a drink problem in the past?

Waitingfordoggo · 08/01/2024 20:38

Good for you @Mamabear2424, sounds like a positive decision.

Mamabear2424 · 09/01/2024 07:16

I think i got defensive as thought 1-2 glasses a night was not a problem, i am so embarrassed to think i have a problem!! I had a nice cup of yorkshire tea last night and a slab of christmas cake (probably more calories than the wine!!!!)
