Does anyone else hate fresh flowers?

It strick me today that I hate fresh flowers as a gift.
I like the look of them , and I love a gorgeous garden or a potted tree/arrangement by front doors etc but when I have a bouquet I just hate it. I can never make it look nice, the petals all fall off and they are just a faff
Of course I can never admit this as its something you're meant to love. I'm not ungrateful, and I actually buy them as a gift for others, so this is a bit lighthearted I suppose.

They are a gesture aren't they? I like that they are a gift with an end date. I really appreciate them and the gesture and even better for not being something I need to live with for ever or feel grateful for forever. Of someone buys or sends me flowers I am pleased for someone to have bothered. How much of an investment do you want people to make in a gift to you. Blimey, it's just a gesture.

Wonderful I am not alone. Particularly dislike anything with scent.

Elastoslax · 11/05/2024 21:55

Hate them. You've killed something to give me a gift 🥺

I've much preferred a living plant.

TheHateIsNotGood · 11/05/2024 22:08

Maybe the shop-bought kind but home grown flowers are one of life's real pleasures - our UK climate and for many dealing with urban soil means growing flowers (instead of veg/edibles) can be a tricky business.

Hate the flowers all you like but if you're given some homegrown flowers at the very least be decent and pretend you really appreciate them coz the person that gave you them must like you enough to give them to you.

Each to their own of course, (allergies aside), understanding, open-minded and all that...but I do think you've got to be a bit wierd to be getting the hate for flowers.

I don't love cut flowers - you just have to watch them die, and it's never clear when to throw them away. They often have a big carbon footprint. I can handle a bunch or two of daffodils a year 😄.

Sometimes a plant just gives lots of flowers, not always, but sometimes they do. Now many of us that tend these plants just want to share the abundance and the pleasure it gives.

Whilst I do understand the anti-flower brigade who say why give me a flower when a plant has to die, etc. Don't worry about the plant too much as it's very likely it'll grow again next year so no plant-deaths to feel guilty about.

Yes. Especially lilies. An ex (and he was already an ex by then, of the creepy stalky variety) sent me an enormous bouquet of white lilies for my birthday a few years ago. Apart from the fact they're associated with funerals and it freaked me the fuck out, especially as he didn't sign his name, they're just awful. I hate the pollen, they stink and they're dangerous to animals.

I recently gave something away on Nextdoor and the woman who came to collect was a bit of a hippy I guess and brought me fresh flowers from her garden and some sort of affirmation card. It was really sweet of her but my god, the flowers stank and were definitely not the variety that were supposed to be put in a vase.

Maybe they were the type to be smoked ✌️

My parents didn't send me to finishing school so I'm useless at doing flower arrangements.
Too many bouquets include lilies which I have to remove to protect my cats.

I hate flowers or plants indoors. I have taken to saying I’m allergic if someone (kindly off course) arrives unannounced with them. Previously I have had the hassle of finding them another home or dumping them if this fails.

Trust me, I would know and be delighted if they were Grin
