Does anyone else hate fresh flowers?

crochetmonkey74 · 04/01/2024 11:45

It strick me today that I hate fresh flowers as a gift.
I like the look of them , and I love a gorgeous garden or a potted tree/arrangement by front doors etc but when I have a bouquet I just hate it. I can never make it look nice, the petals all fall off and they are just a faff
Of course I can never admit this as its something you're meant to love. I'm not ungrateful, and I actually buy them as a gift for others, so this is a bit lighthearted I suppose.

A hand tied bouquet from a local florist is lovely.

Otherwise:

No lillies. I was brought up on them being for funerals. Plus they are so toxic to cats.

No scented flowers. They may look lovely but my lungs hate them.

No £5 bouquets from the supermarket or petrol station. Basically says you don't really care.

Comedycook · 04/01/2024 16:39

Also I think it’s a waste of money, for the price of a bouquet of flowers I could have something more useful like a pair of slippers or even a nice jumper

A decent bouquet is easily £40...maybe more. You could get some really nice make up, pjs, perfume, even some reasonable quality jewellery...all of which I'd rather have

SnapdragonToadflax · 04/01/2024 16:47

I love cutting flowers from my garden, and I occasionally buy myself flowers I love - the first daffs in spring, some peonies, irises. But generally, I hate getting them from others because they're an extra job. I don't mind if it's my choice, but hate having it foisted on me.

Loveablockheel · 04/01/2024 16:48

I second everything said on here, absolutely hate being given flowers, I am also very particular on the flowers I like and when someone presents me with some I hate my heart sinks, if I can’t palm them off they go straight into the recycling bin.

JMSA · 04/01/2024 16:50

Receive them.
Cut off the ends and remove the lower leaves.
Find a vase and fill with water and flower food.
Keep an eye on them and refresh water if necessary.
Chuck out when dead and wash vase.

I don't mean to sound mean or ungrateful, but receiving flowers is yet just another job for me to do Blush

nottoday300 · 06/01/2024 19:12

That's it! I've chucked the last 3 bunches had for birthday and Xmas they were driving me to despair and I know I sound very ungrateful, the first bunch had something in that smelt like gone off cat food, found out and chucked those bits, it's been dead flowers petals and manky water over 3 vases for at least 8 days, I can honestly say I agree with all of you but I feel guilty xx

nottoday300 · 06/01/2024 19:14

@EverDecreasingStandards do you what I was given 3 bunches and in the end I was just stuffing them in the vase ! I think I was at least 45mins sorting them out!!

Snoozymoozy · 06/01/2024 19:18

There's some lovely faux flowers available now!

Dominoeffecter · 06/01/2024 19:21

I hate receiving them

PonyPatter44 · 06/01/2024 19:22

Just to be contrary- I bloody love flowers. Mr Pony buys me flowers a lot, because he knows they make me happy. This also means I never have dead flowers hanging around - as soon as they look a bit sad, they go in the compost bin, and a new bouquet arrives.

My exH refused to buy me flowers for the 22 years we were together "because then you'd wonder what I'd been up to, ha ha ha". Frankly, I couldn't have given a shiny shit. I notice he managed to buy flowers for his new gf after we split...apparently it took a while for the message to get through.

LighthouseTheme · 06/01/2024 19:27

The simple reason is that they are brought into the house to die.....
A bouquet or arrangement may look beautiful but it will inevitably die; a plant has at least some chance of surviving,

Gingerbee · 06/01/2024 19:40

I love flower and plants. I think artificial flowers and plants are hideous.
I don't like chocolates.

WiddlinDiddlin · 06/01/2024 19:44

Hate them, I want to enjoy live plants growing.

Not 'Here, a bunch of pretty things for you to watch slowly wither and die...'

What kind of fucked up gift is that exactly?

Give me a pot plant, or a view of plants growing in the wild, but don't give me something to watch die!

Missingmybabysomuch · 06/01/2024 19:53

I hate them too.
They aren't a gift imo, they are an obligation. I can't just leave them, so I'm forced to find a vase, fill it up, cut the stems, change the water, take out the dead ones, pick up stray leaves/petals, dispose of them, wash put the vase. Not to mention worry about pets/kids getting hold of them and eating them. So much faff. Much prefer looking at them outside or if someone buys me a spider plant or something.

crochetmonkey74 · 06/01/2024 20:21

I have a couple of nice faux bunches.

Another job for me and makes me sneeze. Dh kept forgetting and buying me garage flowers until I started getting him to prep and then chuck them.

@Gingerbee I will have your chocolate and you can have my flowers.

DappledThings · 06/01/2024 20:25

Hate them. A faff to arrange, a faff to get rid off when they're dead and they look a bit shit anyway.

I had a thread saying pretty much this a few years ago and it was full of people telling me I was an ungrateful bitch for not being happy with being given flowers. OP you've got a better crowd! 😁

goingtotown · 06/01/2024 20:30

Not keen on cut flowers especially chrysanthemums, carnations & lilies.

Fionaville · 06/01/2024 20:36

I thought it was just me! I'd never say it, but when I get them as a gift I just think 'Oh great, another job for me' Find a vase, cut them, arrange them in water (which never looks as good as a florist arrangement) then keep the water topped up, clean up the petals/dead ones and finally dispose of them and wash the slimy vase.
Its too ungrateful to say out loud, but I'm really not fussed on them. I'd rather be given a candle.

NappiesAndBunFluff · 06/01/2024 20:40

I don't mind flowers, but I prefer them to be cheap! If you've got more than a tenner to spend I can think of better presents I'd rather get.
And as for faff I agree. I've got two vases that still need a proper wash up before they go away from when the baby was born. 5 months ago...
I've had better things to do.

MargaritaThyme · 06/01/2024 20:41

Yes, I can’t stand flowers. I never buy them, and everyone knows not to buy them for me as gifts. I don’t like the sickly sweet smells and the pollen triggers my asthma & makes me sneeze. Horrid things.

KrisRF · 11/05/2024 21:18

I absolutely hate getting flower. They are a total waste of money and the die... They come with a card that is not even signed by the person giving them. To me it screams let me do the easiest thing to get her something. I make a phone call, give my cc, they deliver it and I am off the hook with having to put in absolutely no effort what so ever. And, she can't say she doesn't like them b/c she will look like a total witch. The are almost a slap in the face if you ask me.... Absolutely no thought or energy put behind this generic waste of money gift. So there I said it. If anyone thinks I am a witch then so be it.

DreamyCyanFinch · 11/05/2024 21:28

I don't hate them , but often must get rid of them as I am often allergic to them.

Katemax82 · 11/05/2024 21:33

I much prefer realistic fake flowers

Asosbabe · 11/05/2024 21:37

Live plant better
