So worried about my baby, can any mums helps

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:00

I have joined mumsnet specifically to ask about this as I am now feeling desperate. My baby had his one year vaccines this time last week, four injections in total including the MMR. The following day he had a high temperature of over 40, called 111 when nothing brought it down and they said to take to a and e. We did this and they said he was fine and temperature was high but probably the vaccine. Sent home. He has been an entirely different baby since that day. Temperature over 40 continued on and off for first 4 days, that has now stopped.

But my baby is looking vacant, not engaging, staring into space, not playing. We went to the supermarket yesterday and two separate people commented that ‘if looks could kill,’… he looks angry. This is not like him. The biggest worry I have is sleep… he slept 14.5 hours last night and is now having a nap again already after waking up at 9:30am? He did the same yesterday and also had a 2.5 hour nap in the afternoon as well. That’s almost 18 hours of sleep a day?

I am very pro vaccines and we are paying for the chicken pox one soon but this has really scared me. Why is he sleeping so much so long after? Why has his temperament changed?

It’s not “this”. What is being ignored is anti vaxxers are using those who suffer exceptionally rare serious side effects to undermine something that saves billions of lives a year.

edited to reflect your edit. The anti vaccine call outs are to those who are blatantly anti vaccine. No one suggests that vaccines done come with side effects, those side effects are not a reason to not get the vaccine. That’s the issue.

Edited

I was agreeing with BlackFriYay's post and do not think that she is an anti vaxxer. You jumped on her and said 'Another one'. I think her post was very reasonable and balanced - your comments not so much.

PurplePansy05 · 03/01/2024 17:02

How is your little one now, OP?

Vaccine or not, I'd be concerned with the symptoms you've described. I hope you had a helpful appointment this afternoon. xx

ValerieMoore · 03/01/2024 17:06

I had measles and I was fine but I think that means I would probably have been fine with the vaccine as well.

supercatlady · 03/01/2024 17:08

Not wanting to worry you but the eye rolling and Hal-chewing thing could be seizure activity. I hope the GP is helpful.

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 17:14

GP totally unconcerned, said he was trying to grab things from the desk, pointing etc and the sleep was to do with recovering from the temperature. She said the mouth was because of back teeth and chapped lips (I hadn’t really noticed this and feel bad!). The eye rolling she didn’t really say even though I asked a few times, just that it will be related to feeling off colour and that we have to wait it out a few more days. Oh she also said the mouth could be in response to the measles part of the vaccine and he may have symptoms of it in his mouth. I feel a bit calmer now but not sure if I should take him to nursery if he’s still off colour. Obviously he’s not infectious but I don’t want him feeling tired there.

Anybody citing vaccine damage payments as proof that vaccines are a risk isn’t balanced. Look at how often it pays out and what for.

BlackFriYay · 03/01/2024 17:14

AnneValentine · 03/01/2024 16:52

And another one.

The number of vaccine damage payments made is minute. It’s significantly lower than the number of people damaged or killed from the diseases they protect against. That’s the reality.

Nobody is suggest that it isn't. I believe that the benefit outweighs the risk in the vast majority of cases. I've had all of mine with the exception being the HPV vax at school. I am paying the price for that as I now have HPV and have to deal with dyskaryosis, biopsies, frequent smears etc. You will never catch me saying that vaccines are not important.

The problem I have is when people like you, all condescending and arrogant, come along to lambast anybody that dares to say they or their child has had a bad reaction or that they are worried about it. You've completely minimised the impact that vaccine damage has had on the people who've been affected by it. You are well out of line.

77 people or whatever the number was, might not matter much to you, but I'm sure it matters to the people directly affected.

Get off of your high horse before you fall off.

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 17:15

@supercatlady i mentioned seizures and she said it wasn’t that… I keep thinking that too

Nobody is saying that no one ever had a bad reaction to a vaccine, people have bad reactions to all sorts of medications it’s just pure bad luck. Allergies and adverse affects have always existed throughout time. The reality is the majority of people have vaccines and are perfectly fine. It’s very normal to have an immune response to a vaccine, it proves your immune system is working properly that’s what it’s designed to do. So likelihood is people probably will experience influenza-like symptoms but that’s not a reason not to have it. I can guarantee you it’s far better than the disease itself. If people bothered to educate themselves properly they’d know this. But heaven forbid anything in life is anything other than unicorns and sprinkles. Another reality is that for the unfortunate, very minute percentage of people who do have a bad reaction, hundreds of thousands of lives are spared from ancient diseases that killed off or disabled an enormous amount of the population. People who parrot about vaccine damage research, need to research the pathogens and illnesses that these vaccines protect against. To coin a PP wilful ignorance at its finest. There is also nothing to suggest all of this is a reaction to the vaccine and not a reaction to one of the many respiratory infections and viruses that are going around. Let’s not forget, unlike the Covid vaccine the MMR has been around for decades so it’s hardly an experimental drug that nobody knows anything about. I don’t know one single educated or intelligent person who would ever look at the pros and cons of vaccines and the science behind them and leave their child at risk of the ever growing diseases that are all of a sudden re-emerging. All these old diseases are coming back and mutating against antibiotics and antivirals due to people pushing mass hysteria and embellishing half truths to suit their own agendas. Eventually we will reach a stage where herd immunity is no longer a thing and children start dying and becoming maimed by perfectly preventable diseases. I hope people are prepared to be held accountable for their actions - but I very much doubt it.

I am so glad the GP was able to reassure you. It is so hard with a first baby. I was lucky that my OH was a doctor, so I had the right reassurance and advice on tap! I can understand that it must be hard without that!

I would keep baby home from nursery for a few days as he will need his Mum whilst he is a bit under the weather.

I hope he makes a quick improvement.

Actually the issue is when people twist what’s said. I NEVER said those people awarded funds didn’t matter. What I said was they don’t negate the benefits of vaccines. The lives saved is far far higher. Without vaccines more people would have died. That is a fact.

What I did was call out someone who arrived on the post to peddle their anti vaccine nonsense. That is not ok. When someone’s child has a perfectly normal reaction to a vaccine they should never have to listen to comments about ASD or vaccine damage payments. That is what’s disgusting. Not what I’ve said which has been factual and balanced.

Thanks everyone. I was desperate for him to have the jab as I was extremely worried about measles! And now I feel bad he’s going through this. Appointment is soon so I will update with what they say. He is much better today than yesterday (playing etc) except for the sleeping/ eye rolling that has continued.

Im sure it feels hard to believe right now but you did the right thing. I've seen a measles epidemic first hand and it's terrifying. Even the children who recover well are far, far sicker than your child is right now.

I also had whooping cough age 44 (vaccine lasts 40 years apparently) and that was do, so awful too. I was coughing much on a couple of occasions that I vomited and then blacked out. And it lasts for months.

ArabellaScott · 03/01/2024 17:27

Hey, OP. Just sending you a Brew.

Glad you've seen a doc and your wee one seems to be better. It can be really worrying having a baby, and it's constantly changing just as you think you're getting a handle on it.

laveritable · 03/01/2024 17:30

Keep on doing all observations and keep a note of it to show your Dr!

I had measles and I was fine but I think that means I would probably have been fine with the vaccine as well.

I had measles too and while I was fine eventually I was very very ill with the GP visiting every day for a while and I was off school for 6 weeks. I was 12.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/01/2024 17:39

I personally wouldn't send to nursery while feeling this off colour OP.

ValerieMoore · 03/01/2024 17:42

And also the nursery might not notice any symptoms as well as you will. If you are still worried, a blood test can confirm if seizures have occurred within the last couple of hours.

CarolChristmasCake · 03/01/2024 17:42

Glad the GP wasn’t that concerned, OP. I’d keep him off for a couple of days too. Hopefully he’ll be back to normal soon 💐

Janieforever · 03/01/2024 17:45

op I mean this gently but I think some people are feeding your anxiety,
your baby is fine, ok, the temp has gone, they are eating fine, nappies are fine, they are perfectly alert. Send to nursery, I think new parent anxiety has got to you and some posters on here are making it worse.

they have a few things like chapped lips and teething, the eye rolling babies can do when tired, but they have slept off the temp so should be on the up.

please don’t pay attention to the scaremongerers. Just send to nursery. It’s fine. Listen to the doctor.

Why? The gp is not concerned, the child has no temp, is perfectly alert, is sleeping fine, is eating fine, no happy issues. They are teething and have chapped lips. Not something to stay off nursery for.

My DS is booked in to have his 1 year jabs next week, and now I'm a little anxious after reading this 😕

This is one incidence.

Think of the hundreds and hundreds of parents who don't post because it's all fine.

You really don't want your DC to catch the illnesses those vaccines prevent

I was born in the 50s. So I had measles, mumps and rubella. Luckily I was just 'ill' but they were horrible.

And now you get vaccinated against some meningitis strains. That is just amazing.

Be brave and take them

He’s not feeling 100% - he needs his mum!!! And as @ValerieMoore said OP may notice something that nursery miss.

Is tetanus included in these jabs? I had the tetanus jab as an adult and got a really stiff neck and jaw for a few days, and struggled with things like smiling and eating properly. I wonder if that is what has caused the mouth thing.
