The Ally Pally Darts crowd

Are a bit loud!
I don't remember dart crowds being that loud when it was on TV a long time ago. If you are like that at a snooker tournament when you have to concentrate, you get told off. '

But the darts crowd.

How do the players concentrate? Don't other fans who are trying to watch get annoyed with how loud it is?

It sounds like a boozy hell.

demonheed · 02/01/2024 22:49

The ally pally has always been the same.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 02/01/2024 22:50

When the players played during covid they had tapes played of the crowd being loud because it was weird without it.

Legendairy · 02/01/2024 22:52

It's the most amazing atmosphere there, the players seem to love it. We took our kids and they are desperate to go back.

It doesn't really feel that loud when you're actually there but yes it is very very boozy. We have been to the premier league also and that was even more boozy!!

stomachameleon · 02/01/2024 22:53

There are two types of darts...
The old school quiet darts
And the Loud boozy high stakes darts.
The prize funds are quite different.

The players know what it's like. They generally wear ear buds and focus on the darts.

The only player I have ever seen moan about the crowd is gerwin price. And they now boo him even more!

cakeorwine · 02/01/2024 22:53

Looks like there's a history of this, with booing as well

Darts back in the day asked for quiet whilst the players were on the oche, they don't do that now.

cakeorwine · 02/01/2024 22:58

Booing someone is really bad and not really very sporting.

You don't get that in snooker so why in darts?

OP posts:
stomachameleon · 02/01/2024 23:14

@Goodlard because it's different darts.

Years ago the only darts was the silent darts. With very set money etc. Very controlled.
there was a break away from it by Phil Taylor and a few others and it became the big corporate thing it is now.

I am now going to add a caveat and that's the fact my partner told me that and like most things I was half listening.

This was a long time ago though so the players now will be used to the atmosphere. They crowd boo each other, the players, the fact they don't get a nine dart finish. It's meant in a light hearted way.

stomachameleon · 02/01/2024 23:16

I think it's BDO quiet (much smaller venues)
PDC carnival atmosphere.

Didn’t they do that with the football at one point too? Sport with no crowds in Covid was so weird, I’d actually forgotten how odd it was!

Because it's encouraged! You can't have failed to notice the music cues, the blank signs handed out, the hosts shouting encouragement to the crowd? It's not just a darts match, it's a show and an atmosphere. Completely different to the one at the snooker.

I think Luke Littler is gonna end up a mega star, I really do.

He's only 16!

edwinbear · 03/01/2024 05:27

We went to Ally Pally before Christmas, but to go to the theatre to watch A Christmas Carol so different part of the venue, but were unfortunate to be travelling on the same train as the darts crowd. The behaviour was absolutely shocking. Huge crowds of adults dressed up like ketchup/mustard bottles, Beefeaters, traffic cones etc, all absolutely wasted already, swigging cans of beer and shouting/jeering/chanting. My DC were quite intimidated by it all (and I was also very pleased to get off the train). Not a pleasant experience at all, can’t imagine what it must be like once you get inside, definitely not for me!

It looks fantastic! God knows this country needs a bit of over the top craziness for a couple of weeks every year.

NormaLouiseBates · 03/01/2024 08:06

Lol my husband has been watching this for the last few days and the absolute racket out of the crowds 😂 I tried to have a NYD nap on the sofa but had to go upstairs instead because it was just so annoying #firstworldproblems 😂

SoRainbowRhythms · 03/01/2024 08:11

I've been a few times - it's generally really good natured and a good laugh.

Still happens , was on before Christmas last year , very poor standard though

Moved to the O2 a few years ago and following that the BDO folded and was replaced by the WDF now

HerbalTeaAndCake · 03/01/2024 08:29

Looks horrendous.

Don’t ever go to Twickenham!

TicketyBoo11 · 03/01/2024 08:33

I love it..and will miss it when it finishes tonight. Luke Littler..what a bloody talent 🤩 He is loving life on that stage. Gerwyn Price was hilarious last year with his ear defenders, he was crucified. Mint.

Is he though?
