To be annoyed in laws ruined NY fireworks AGAIN!

Baulin · 01/01/2024 15:15

So every New Year’s Eve we go to my in laws and have a small get together. However every time the London fireworks start, since the first commentary in 2021, I have to endure a massive rant and rave about left wing agenda which completely ruins the atmosphere of the night. I was dreading the fireworks display last night because I knew all I’d hear from the family is complaining and talking over the show. As soon as I heard the same sex marriage part I thought “oh god here we go” and then the homophobic whining started. I was fuming because it just ruins it for me. It’s as though they’re unable to dislike something without feeling the need to comment on it.

Does anyone else find this annoying from family and do you say anything or just let it go over your head?

OP posts:

It's not a BBC commentary, it's part of the music and sound that accompanies the fireworks. And it does come across as having a certain agenda. What were the highlights of 2023? Apparently 10 years since gay marriage was legalised, we were lectured informed.

(I'm in favour of gay marriage by the way, but don't see why this needs to be a theme of New Year's Eve)

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 01/01/2024 18:16

I thought it was the Tories who brought in same sex marriage?

AndThatWasNY · 01/01/2024 18:17

User1775 · 01/01/2024 17:15

BTW there is nothing 'left wing' about same sex marriage which the Tories legalised. There are many gay conservatives, and a great great many non white - why is this being seen as a political issue? All the Tory's I know despise racists and many are black/south Asian heritage.

I wish this was the same for me. All the Tories I know are xenophobic, racist and bigoted. As are some of the labour supporters I know. I avoid all bigots regardless of who they vote for.

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 01/01/2024 18:17

I'm absolutely racking my brain over the content now. If I had known there would be a thread, I'd have tried to take notes.

I do recall a few sentences about same-sex marriage, and also maybe the Spice Girls being played during that segment?

@Grammarnut My dad is currently lives with my gay DB and his partner 😂He was a homophobe. No bystanders. You dit there and let a homophobe or racist rant and you are part of the problem.

You seem somewhat intolerant. You also are making assumptions about me.

Uricon2 · 01/01/2024 18:20

You are choosing to spend every NYE with homophobic bigots because you like to go out and they put on a "do". You might be amazed to learn that numerous places of entertainment are available most nights, especially NYE.

So many weak as water people implying that they are forced to spend time with people they dislike. They aren't. What do you expect any of us to suggest, OP?

So if you were there at the firework display in person, would you hear it over the outdoor tannoy system?

Cnidarian · 01/01/2024 18:23

I've voted YABU because you absolutely can just not see them. You choose to inflict this on yourself, there are othe parties on NYE.

CatMadam · 01/01/2024 18:24

I always call bigots out on their nonsense. You’d be surprised how often it shuts them up, people like that aren’t generally brilliant at debate so once challenged a lot of them just go in a huff!

Vistada · 01/01/2024 18:24

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 01/01/2024 18:07

The PILs are voicing it in their own home.

RTFT please. Acknowledged this mistake pages back.

Cnidarian · 01/01/2024 18:25

10 years since gay marriage is a big deal, not a "lecture". It changed a lot of people's lives.

StripeyDeckchair · 01/01/2024 18:25

YABU because if they are so predictable why are you going?

Grammarnut · 01/01/2024 18:26

^ this!

I'd be ashamed to have to admit I voted Leave.

Totally fucked up opportunities for our YP, for starters... I probably wouldn't be that keen on congestion charges either if I had to drive in London.

I voted leave and am happy to say so (I am also a gender critical feminist). No opportunities have been lost for most young people because the EU has never offered such a thing to the majority of young people in this country. All it has done is facilitate employers/businesses to avoid training local young people by bringing in EU immigrants under Blair's free movement rules, enabling them to undercut local wages through use of agencies. I don't call that an opportunity.

LadyBird1973 · 01/01/2024 18:29

People keep saying that leave 'scraped' 52% (of those who voted) as if that's evidence of the UK not being anti EU, but pro only got 48%. And the people who cba to turn up and vote, clearly didn't give a shit either way. If this country was so pro EU, those people would have got their backsides to the ballot box!
However you feel about Brexit, the 'scraped by at 52%' is a poor argument.

Two out of ten of my young cousins moved to EU countries weeks before the Brexit deadline while they still could and are still there and thriving.

The opportunities were there for anyone with the ambition and vision to make the most of them. They're not anymore.

It would be an easier pill to swallow if we could now see that we have gained something in exchange for leaving. But the promised benefits have so far failed to materialise. How many people are better off now thanks to Brexit? (Apart from people like Jacob Rees Mogg and Crispin Blunt who made a killing shorting the pound, I mean.)

The cost of living crisis is not exactly unrelated to Brexit either. Yes, prices have risen in the EU as well. But nowhere near as much as they have in the UK.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 01/01/2024 18:31

Which bit of the fireworks mentioned brexit? Really confused now!😲

Baulin · 01/01/2024 15:25

@Ewoklady Because we like to get out on New Year’s Eve and they put on a do. Next year I might suggest the pub.

Surely you want to actually have fun though?

It sounds as though you were dreading it before it even started.

I would rather be at home in my PJs than have to put up with this.

There are lots of different celebrations going on so just say that you’ve been invited to one of them next year and see how you get on.

That’s what I assumed. Hopefully someone will answer

I didn’t think it was just for TV version

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 01/01/2024 18:36

I agree Brexit was a terrible idea and should never have happened and has massively damaged our country but that is not really a "leftwing" view.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 01/01/2024 18:39

What was leftwing about the actual fireworks? Anyone?

No thanks :)

LadyBird1973 · 01/01/2024 18:40

I'd prefer to just see the fireworks without any kind of messaging tbh. We don't need it - the fireworks are enough. And the music should be the most successful/best British music of the year, not old spice girls hots or non British music - imo the London fireworks should be a celebration of the passing year from a British cultural perspective, not banging on about events from 10 years ago. And not politically loaded - politics sucks all the joy out of events and leads to arguments. NYE should just be marking the passing of the year and letting people have fun.
