I love leopard print (not tight Bet Lynch style) but just the print on a midi dress for instance or the Veja white trainers with hints of leopard. Don’t have that many items but do have few summer style dresses. We are away and last night I wore one of my favourite dresses. Was pretty expensive and is a loose style midi dress which I find super comfy and is really flattering. Friends have all complimented it but husband was in a grump and just said “what are you wearing?”. Bit pissed off as had managed to actually wash hair and do make up and thought looked pretty nice for New Year’s Eve dinner at hotel (always difficult to get ready whilst also looking after 3 kids).

he then kept going on about how he hates leopard print and that it’s really trashy. Really ruined the evening as he was being such a prick. He genuinely wanted me to go and change, obviously I didn’t. Please tell me I’m not being unreasonable??? I don’t care if he didn’t compliment something he doesn’t like but surely he was dick to go on about how he hated it?

he said that I shouldn’t wear something he hates…

This thread has given me the urge to go and buy some leopard print. 😊

MistyGreenAndBlue · 01/01/2024 12:47

Bet Lynch be damned! It always reminds ME of Rod Stewart.

But I'll accept that I'm old and out of touch. 😂

He probably makes a similar association and that's why he dislikes it so much. And he's allowed his preferences as we all are.

However, that doesn't make it ok to be such a dick about it on a night out. He should have kept his trap shut. After all, no one is making HIM wear it.

It’s how you wear it.
How is this shirt trashy looking?

It just is to me. BECAUSE of the print.

Personal taste innit? 😉

Just as you are entitled to wear it, he is entitled to hate it. You expressed your opinion as did he.

Rubbish.

My wife hates leopard print. I wear leopard print.

She would never say any woman looked ‘trashy’ (ffs) or presume to try and tell me what to wear!

He's a giant knobber, so that's that.

My children (late teens) always shout 'put the leopard print down, mum' when I'm about to buy some. I don't know why, I love a little bit and see it as a neutral, but they think it dates me for some reason. I guess young people don't wear leopard print, but I'm not trying to look young?

In fairness, M&S has been wall to wall leopard print and ditzy florals for around 5 years, so it's not entirely unreasonable for them to associate it with teachers (who are always incomprehensibly old in the students' eyes - some are even over 30, after all 🤐) and the generally older customer base that M&S takes in comparison to Primark, Zara and Boohoo/PYT/etc.

Igotagoodcard · 01/01/2024 12:58

Going on about how your wife looks trashy, trying to make her get changed, making her feel uncomfortable and ruining a night out for her doesn’t make him a man with an opinion- it makes him a bully.

You have a husband problem not a leopard print problem.

This really made me laugh for some reason 😂 not a sentence I ever expected to read!

If he does this often I agree. It is possible though he has really got the wrong end of the stick about how embarrassing leopard print is or isn’t. If DH tried to come out in a gimp suit … I’d probably “bully” him a bit about it…

pleasebekindnotpreachy · 01/01/2024 13:11

(I mean 'I wouldn't change'!)

Pugdogmom · 01/01/2024 13:17

My husband might comment on an outfit, as I do on his. He would absolutely NEVER tell me what to wear.
I love LP, and also have tiger print and a Zebra print coat. 🤣
Your husband is a dick.

Alargeoneplease89 · 01/01/2024 13:20

Yeah, I would be buying a big leopard print coat, onesie, etc. Would really annoy me that my DH thinks he can voice his opinion on my clothes.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/01/2024 13:36

I love a bit of leopard print.

I think brunettes can carry it off more.Blonde women can look a bit cheap I think because of the Bet Lynch association.

Slobberchops1 · 01/01/2024 13:38

Urgh it is tacky , he was probably embarrassed

Undethetree · 01/01/2024 13:39

My DH doesn't like some of the things I wear. He just takes the piss out of me if he thinks it's something a bit out there but it makes me laugh and he wouldnt do that if he knew it made me feel bad. He often says that one of the the things he likes about me is the fact that I don't really care what he thinks when it comes to things like clothes.

I agree that leopard print is fine but your DH less so. I bet you looked great BTW

frezstart · 01/01/2024 13:51

Leopard print is a neutral
Your husband however is a knob

The late Queen and Diana, Princess of wales wore leopard print. https://www.tatler.com/gallery/royals-wearing-leopard-print

Rich women wore dead animals over three decades ago shocker.

GoldDuster · 01/01/2024 14:10

He was being a controlling prick, OP.

Sunflower8848 · 01/01/2024 14:13

Sorry but I have to agree with your husband…I think it’s really chavvy and screams working class. I feel bad admitting that out loud 🙊🙊🙊

pingusslappyfeet · 01/01/2024 14:16

bemused how anyone could think he’s in the right here. Even if he hates what you’re wearing, how is it okay to ruin the night over it?

You should.
What's wrong with being working class?

Spybot · 01/01/2024 14:40

I love leopard print. I think it looks good on a wide range of people and I consider almost a neutral. You can find it done garishly where the print is too bright, I avoid those ones. I wore a mohair leopard print dress last night and felt great. I had blond hair and false nails too but still didn't feel like Bet Lynch. Just ignore your husband . He doesn't know what he's talking about. My FIL has lots to say about it womens fashion and hates leopard print too. I tell him to stay in his lane!

Moveoverdarlin · 01/01/2024 14:43

I love leopard print, with blacks and navy it looks really stylish. My husband always makes the Bet Lynch joke and says he’s not keen. I tend to go with the ‘fuck off, what d’you know?’ approach. It works.
