AIBU to wear leopard print ??

I love leopard print (not tight Bet Lynch style) but just the print on a midi dress for instance or the Veja white trainers with hints of leopard. Don’t have that many items but do have few summer style dresses. We are away and last night I wore one of my favourite dresses. Was pretty expensive and is a loose style midi dress which I find super comfy and is really flattering. Friends have all complimented it but husband was in a grump and just said “what are you wearing?”. Bit pissed off as had managed to actually wash hair and do make up and thought looked pretty nice for New Year’s Eve dinner at hotel (always difficult to get ready whilst also looking after 3 kids).

he then kept going on about how he hates leopard print and that it’s really trashy. Really ruined the evening as he was being such a prick. He genuinely wanted me to go and change, obviously I didn’t. Please tell me I’m not being unreasonable??? I don’t care if he didn’t compliment something he doesn’t like but surely he was dick to go on about how he hated it?

he said that I shouldn’t wear something he hates…

I think the leopard print is the least of your problems...

This! He sounds like a negging prick.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/01/2024 10:46

I like it too. I think it counts as a neutral!

Your DH is a twat.

Even if it was something I didn’t like or thought was trashy I wouldn’t ever say that to someone!

SoWhat21 · 01/01/2024 10:48

My DH has an interest in fashion (more so than me!) so can have quite strong opinions on clothing. We have a standing agreement unless specifically asked by me he does not offer a negative opinion on my clothes (positive is fine). I ask for his input only if I want an honest answer. Because that is what he will give me.
In general his eye is very good and really he’s never put me wrong but there are some things he isn’t mad on so he just keeps quiet when I wear those. He certainly doesn’t sulk about it! It works for us

Toesaresoweird · 01/01/2024 10:54

I like a bit of leopard print. Mainly as accents, scarf with all black outfit, shoes or bag. Hell I'd even get nails done with leopard print on!

Your husband sounds controlling. Some men do this as though you belong to them and have to do as they say. Keep wearing what you want OP.

Holidayhell22 · 01/01/2024 10:54

What was your dh wearing?
A beautiful suit with an immaculately pressed white shirt? Leather shoes. Does he look like a 25 year old Brad Pitt?
Does he often criticise your choices?
Is he Tom Ford.
Even if he is a Doppler ganger for a Jean Paul Gaultier model, he sounds like a twat.

The fact he hates it would make me wear it all the more. I am an awkward bitch though...

Absolutely yanbu. There's nothing wrong with leopard print and your dh is bang out of order for having a go at you for it!

Clingfilm · 01/01/2024 11:14

Yanbu to wear it. I love that you felt good and carried on regardless.
Disclaimer, I'm currently sat here in my lovely soft leopard print dressing gown.

I’m bias because I love animal print, especially leopard print and I always get compliments when I wear it, so I know most other people like it too.

He does not get to tell you what you can and can’t wear.

Its one thing to not like what you’re wearing but it’s a complete different thing to be a dick about it.

It reminds of the thread where a woman wore trainers to the airport and her DH was being a dick about it.

Williaint · 01/01/2024 11:29

Also op leopard/animal print does attract attention, way more so than a full outfit of "capsule wardrobe" boring grey, beige, white and black. I think that's why some people don't like it 😬 probably a bit of jealousy they don't have the confidence to wear it, or they cant carry it off or insecurity on your DH part. Ignore and carry on looking fab 🤩

43ontherocksporfavor · 01/01/2024 11:43

Oh I forgot to add my leopard print umbrella and scarf! Also have a leopard print cushion in my sofa, leopard print faux fur head band(ski type).
Also have a zebra print dress.

You have a husband problem not a leopard print problem.

This!

Blinkityblonk · 01/01/2024 11:46

He's a giant knobber, so that's that.

My children (late teens) always shout 'put the leopard print down, mum' when I'm about to buy some. I don't know why, I love a little bit and see it as a neutral, but they think it dates me for some reason. I guess young people don't wear leopard print, but I'm not trying to look young?

fromhellsheartistabatthee · 01/01/2024 09:43

Tell him you'll stop wearing leopard print when he stops being a twat.

This!

blackfluffycat · 01/01/2024 11:51

I'm no wearing leopard pjs now. I have leopard adidas trainers, leopard coat, fierce, slippers, various clothes. I'm waiting for my dds to tell me to stop!!

TheFutureIs · 01/01/2024 11:55

Half of my work wardrobe is leopard print. Wear the dress!!!

Londontown12 · 01/01/2024 11:55

Leopard print is always in ! It’s a classic the only thing that’s a problem is when it’s been worn to make a character look cheap and nasty that’s where it has gotten a bad rap !
But personally I love it classic piece x

LlynTegid · 01/01/2024 11:56

I don't like it, but that as said is the least of the issue here.

Though well down the list of bad clothing choices in this country.

BrightGreenMoonBuggy · 01/01/2024 11:57

Time for you to go full leopard. Leopard leggings with a leopard coat. Bugger his attempts to police your clothing!

Fair point.

Yeah this

rookiemere · 01/01/2024 12:08

I love a splash of leopard print.
I suspect DH isn't crazy about it, but he would never say anything.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 01/01/2024 12:13

I’m mildly amused by the “it’s only good for animals” thing. Is it considered animal appropriation? Grin

pleasebekindnotpreachy · 01/01/2024 12:20

Took me years to build up the confidence to wear animal print! Well done you. Definitely no longer trashy unless maybe shiny and overly booby! Sounds more like you overshadowed him or stood out in a room of dullards and he's too insecure or introverted to deal with it. Ideally he should be proud of you but I guess some people just too insecure for that. I wouldn't chance. Go you! Hopefully he can come around

Calliopespa · 01/01/2024 12:32

FluffyFanny · 01/01/2024 10:40

Your DH is clearly still stuck in the past when leopard was considered trashy- my mum's the same, can't understand that it's fashionable now.

Yeah I that’s true. He’s not wrong that it has had trashy associations, albeit it has had an overhaul fashion-wise. Some men don’t really keep up with women’s fashion particularly and so he wasn’t coming from nowhere with his comment. He might easily have thought it was a moment of fashion error - we’ve all had them! I’ve commented on DH’s choices before and feel as though I’m being helpful ( saving him from embarrassment 🙊), as have DCs. If he doesn’t do this to you all the time, I’d try to just be pleased he even noticed: some men wouldn’t. If it’s typical behaviour then the issue is not about leopard print…
