AIBU to wear leopard print ??

I love leopard print (not tight Bet Lynch style) but just the print on a midi dress for instance or the Veja white trainers with hints of leopard. Don’t have that many items but do have few summer style dresses. We are away and last night I wore one of my favourite dresses. Was pretty expensive and is a loose style midi dress which I find super comfy and is really flattering. Friends have all complimented it but husband was in a grump and just said “what are you wearing?”. Bit pissed off as had managed to actually wash hair and do make up and thought looked pretty nice for New Year’s Eve dinner at hotel (always difficult to get ready whilst also looking after 3 kids).

he then kept going on about how he hates leopard print and that it’s really trashy. Really ruined the evening as he was being such a prick. He genuinely wanted me to go and change, obviously I didn’t. Please tell me I’m not being unreasonable??? I don’t care if he didn’t compliment something he doesn’t like but surely he was dick to go on about how he hated it?

he said that I shouldn’t wear something he hates…

I read somewhere that animal print is essentially a considered a neutral these days because its so ubiquitous.

I remember feeling a bit weird about it when it first became a thing that was acceptable wear (probably nearly 2 decades ago now!) because it was always associated with Bet Lynch/ Kat Slater type characters, but it's pretty much the same as wearing a black dress now.

Gross? Really?

Yes. Gross.

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 01/01/2024 10:13

Essentially you looked phenomenal and he got massively insecure.

Dump his arse before it gets worse.

I think that any animal print looks gross OP (but lovely on animals) and would never wear it. BUT - your choice to wear whatever you want and your problem is your husband not your clothes.

Agree.

Strugglingtodomybest · 01/01/2024 10:14

I can't stand leopard print personally, but as pp have pointed out, it's completely up to you what you choose to wear.

I'd be ok with him expressing his opinion once about it, but to keep going on at you like he did isn't reasonable in the least.

he said that I shouldn’t wear something he hates

Did he say why he thinks this? Does he always think he's the centre of the universe?

Ladybirder · 01/01/2024 10:17

‘he said that I shouldn’t wear something he hates…’

that is a pretty shocking statement. Basically he thinks he can have control over what you can and cannot wear.

Ariela · 01/01/2024 10:17

According to The Mancunion you are bang on trend:

Tell your OH he's not up to date with fashion.

hanahsaunt · 01/01/2024 10:06

Just as you are entitled to wear it, he is entitled to hate it. You expressed your opinion as did he.

Yeah, he’s entitled to have an opinion. What he’s not entitled to do is completely ruin her evening and make her feel shit because she refused to defer to his opinion.

BoobyDazzler · 01/01/2024 10:20

I love leopard print.

The key to happiness is, imo, to wear what you like, eat what you like and do what you like, when you like. Life is too short for caring what other people think.

I’d love the “gross” poster to expand on that a bit. What do you mean by gross?

MumblesParty · 01/01/2024 10:24

I agree with your husband, leopard print is ugly and trashy, but he’s got no right to tell you what to wear .

electriclight · 01/01/2024 10:24

I tell dp if he wears something I hate or something very unflattering, so I don't think he did anything wrong by mentioning it.

But once you made it clear that you were happy wearing it and wouldn't be changing, that should've been the end of it.

Was the night ruined because he kept mentioning it (annoying) or because he brought it up once and that was enough to upset you?

LenaLamont · 01/01/2024 10:24

He was rude and unreasonable. If he isn’t keen on something you’re wearing he can keep his opinion to himself.

He was completely unreasonable to expect you to change clothes to suit his tastes. You dress for yourself, not him.

I bet you looked amazing!

graceinspace999 · 01/01/2024 10:31

I find leopard print repulsive. If my partner wore it I would refuse to go anywhere with them unless they changed.

My partner knows this, loves me and would never wear it.

Partner despises liver and asks that I never have it/cook it in our home.

I totally accept this because I love them. It doesn’t make them a knob/evil/abusive or whatever.

If I cooked myself liver at home I would be sending my partner a strong message about my feelings towards them. I expect they would be angry/upset at me if I did this.

In fact it would cause the war of the livers.

We are allowed likes and dislikes in relationships.

StonwEd · 01/01/2024 10:32

he’s horrible. I remember an ex telling me I couldn’t get away with red lipstick, it really did a number on my confidence and I’ll still never wear it but would love to.
I wore leopard print skinny jeans last night, they looked incredible with my dms and I didn’t look remotely trashy- my husband didn’t think so either.
wear whatever makes you feel good and please don’t take his comment to heart, it says way more about him than you x

BatshitCrazyWoman · 01/01/2024 10:34

He's a twat. I love a bit of leopard - I have an umbrella, a satin leopard skirt, a scarf, a whole wall in my house ...

Nicole1111 · 01/01/2024 10:34

Your husband was being controlling. Your job now is to pick an item he likes and wears regularly and harass him whenever he wears it to change.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 01/01/2024 10:35

MumblesParty · 01/01/2024 10:24

In your opinion it's 'ugly and trashy'. Others disagree

Williaint · 01/01/2024 10:36

I always wear at least one item of animal print clothing or accessory every day and look fabulous in it. Tell him to fuck off.

Nannydoodles · 01/01/2024 10:36

I love a bit of leopard print - not to much though - and I’m in my 60’s. It’s something that never seems to date as the colours are so neutral, I’ve always thought of it as a good wardrobe investment, my lovely kitten heels are about 30 years old and I still get compliments when I wear them (very expensive at the time and only worn on special occasions!).
It sounds to me that your husband had the hump over something else but chose to focus on your dress, did he have something else on his mind?

Wait - other posters call it repulsive, trashy and ugly but I have to explain myself further for saying I think it's gross?! 😂

But in case you need further clarification on what I meant, this is from the online Collins dictionary:

  1. ADJECTIVE
If you describe something as gross, you think it is very unpleasant. [informal, disapproval] He wears really gross holiday outfits.
FluffyFanny · 01/01/2024 10:40

Your DH is clearly still stuck in the past when leopard was considered trashy- my mum's the same, can't understand that it's fashionable now.

DewHopper · 01/01/2024 10:41

It's always been fashionable for animals - for people, not so much.

TotallyForgettableForNow · 01/01/2024 10:42

I dislike animal prints on me. I do think they look cheap and trashy on some people, on others they can look glamorous and on trend! It just depends on how you wear them.
Regardless of the above I would never have been such a complete knob about it as the husband was.
Who ruins a night out over a perfectly suitable peace of clothing ffs.

Yes - the husband is the problem here.
