OP posts:
Harvestfestivalknickers · 31/12/2023 17:48

Services to hospitality and culture

Greenhelium · 31/12/2023 17:50

For shafting his employees during covid 🤣

HelpMeGetThrough · 31/12/2023 17:50

Services to cheap refillable coffee.

Gets my vote.

supersonicginandtonic · 31/12/2023 17:51

For making it affordable for some families to eat out.

AdaColeman · 31/12/2023 17:52

Services to his Bankers probably. I've been baffled by the selection in this recent batch of Honours.

stepintochristmas1 · 31/12/2023 17:52

What!? Jesus who's next ? Any fucker .

Brahumbug · 31/12/2023 17:53

Because of his donations to the Tory party.

DreamItDoIt · 31/12/2023 17:54

Yes perhaps @anyfucker should be on the honours list for services to Mumsnet 🤣

RescueRespect · 31/12/2023 17:54

My university student kids are grateful for his ‘services’ ie cheap beer 🙄

GreekDogRescue · 31/12/2023 17:54

I know some elderly impoverished people (well my aunt) who love weatherspons.
It isn’t the Mumsnet demographic though so I anticipate much gnashing of teeth and fuming about gammons

TheChippendenSpook · 31/12/2023 17:55

You can be knighted for anything these days but if you raise money for charity then you get put lower down the honours list.

It's a joke.

User1775 · 31/12/2023 17:55

He's a massive employer and political influencer, they always get them. It's not for being a lovely person, it's for sucking up to the right people

BIossomtoes · 31/12/2023 17:57

Tory donor.

TheThingIsYeah · 31/12/2023 17:59

Greenhelium · 31/12/2023 17:50

That story was rubbish but I'm sure you already knew that.

NoKateMoss · 31/12/2023 18:00

And Stuart Hogg gets an MBE. He recently got a 17 year old pregnant while his wife was pregnant with their 4th child. What an honourable man.

supersonicginandtonic · 31/12/2023 17:51

Absolutely! Can't go wrong with a cheap meal and drink at Spoons. Unlimited tea refills. Might go for a cheap breakfast 😋 tomorrow

Alcyoneus · 31/12/2023 18:22

If a war criminal can be knighted, why not this dude?

HelpMeGetThrough · 31/12/2023 18:26

My eldest has just said that!! 🤣

ANightmareBeforeChristmas · 31/12/2023 18:39

I've no time for the Brexiteer twat and his pubs that don't allow dogs in the beer garden.

ohdamnitjanet · 31/12/2023 18:41

I’m quite happy to go to Spoons. A glass of wine is less than half the cost than most other pubs. It’s all about the company and a chat.

Agreed, like Spoons, nothing wrong with it.

PopNotPolitics · 31/12/2023 18:55

The chain employs tens of thousands of people.

They repurpose beautiful old buildings into interesting pubs.

The pubs offer excellent value for money.

I'm not a fan of Martins' politics, but there's no denying his contribution to business and communities.

MermaidEyes · 31/12/2023 18:57

For his services to students everywhere. £6 jug of cocktails? Can't go wrong!

User135644 · 31/12/2023 19:01

He's an absolute fool for championing Brexit (which has caused huge financial losses and closures of his pubs). Wetherspoons is a high street institution though and he employs a lot of people and keeps prices affordable.

In reality the Tories are rewarding all the Brexit crowd with honours.

TheTecknician · 31/12/2023 19:05

I'm always amazed at the readiness of people on MN to have a pop at a man who is so remote from the day to day operations of hundreds of his pubs that it may as well be anybody at the helm. Is that they feel the need to boycott and foam at the mouth because he is unapologetic in his political allegiances. At least he is public and honest. For all we know, there could be several captains of industry whose politics we may find odious but whose services we use because we are ignorant of same.
