he is unapologetic in his political allegiances.

It's one thing being unapologetic, it's another turning the interior of your pubs into a copy of the Brexit bus. I probably wouldn't agree with the politics of my employer's CEO, but all internal communications are strictly politically neutral.

Tory doner

i wouldn’t mind if it was lovely pensioners going for dinner but the ones near us seem to be the hub of local fights and vomit pavements

I once heard someone say that Wetherspoons were great as they kept the riff raff out of all the other pubs in their town.

I don't mind them, some of the pubs are in amazing buildings, they haven't been greedy with their prices, and they are always rammed so they clearly have a very successful business model. Hence the knighthood I guess.

listsandbudgets · 31/12/2023 19:56

for his service to toilet availability.. Every Spoons I've ever been to has plenty of clean well maintained toilets a d staff nearly ways turn a blind eye to customers using them.

there don't seem to be many public toilets left the man deserves a knighthood for "Services to the Weak Bladdered"..
Lord Martin of the Toilet has a certain ring to it

Why would they turn a blind eye to customers using them? That’s literally what they’re for.

Coincidentally · 31/12/2023 20:00

Those who are snobbish about ‘spoons.
In the deprived South Coast town I come from, drinks are 1/3 of the cost of the chichi London pubs near where I live now. Love to visit my old friends -pubs are full and friendly.

listsandbudgets · 31/12/2023 20:01

@BIossomtoes sorry that should of cause be NON customers

It was obvious that's what you meant!

2 posts in before someone came out with the covid BS. That's a record isn't it?

Yes perhaps @anyfucker should be on the honours list for services to Mumsnet 🤣

I thought this too. Smile

A saint compared with some of those who have been awarded a knighthood. Philip Green comes to mind.

Boris Johnson allegedly wanted to honour his own father, or put another way, a man who had assaulted his own mother.

NoMoreFalafelsForYou · 01/01/2024 14:34

I'm.assuming like a pp said, for hospitality and culture.
Hate his politics, but love his pubs.
Cheap, good food and drinks, does up/ renovates old buildings and brings jobs to towns.
Which is a good thing.

whatsappdoc · 01/01/2024 14:35

Love the old buildings, Whitstable and Exeter are my two favourites. The only downside is no dogs, not even outside so I haven't been to one for ages.

Same with ours. It's the local haunt for those barred from the other bars in the town. Last time we were eating the guy across from us peed himself and it ran down the stool. Sickened me. It's locally known as Pint and a Fight.

NoMoreFalafelsForYou · 01/01/2024 14:38

@happyasaseagullstealingchips
Ewww. Sounds a million miles away from my local one which is lovely.
Love to go in sometimes by myself for a breakfast if I'm having a wander round town, or a curry if it's later on

CharlottePimpernel · 01/01/2024 14:42

The ones near me are nice. It's cheap and cheerful, I can take the child in and get us both lunch and a drink without having to spend a fortune. I don't even drink alcohol but I love Wetherspoons. I'm not a Tory supporter and I didn't vote for Brexit but I'm not going there for politics, I'm going for egg and chips and refillable coffee.

StaunchMomma · 01/01/2024 14:56

Services to donating to the Tories/Brexit Party/ Reform, more like!

Same old old boys club 🙄

I've no time for the Brexiteer twat and his pubs that don't allow dogs in the beer garden.

Is this true that dogs are not allowed in the gardens?
If so he really is a 'Good Bloke'

Good job we're not all the same.

Spoons is an absolute haven for many neurodivergent people. Order from the app and whichever Spoons you're in the food is exactly the same. On the same plates. Bliss for many people.

Coincidentally · 01/01/2024 15:32

And mercifully dog-free unlike most pubs and cafes now

Globules · 01/01/2024 15:40

Love the old buildings, Whitstable and Exeter are my two favourites. The only downside is no dogs, not even outside so I haven't been to one for ages.

My favourites are Crosse Keys in City of London and The Opera House in Tunbridge Wells. Millions spent on restoring them. You can even watch a live opera in the TW branch while eating your cheap dinner.

I think one of the many Spoons upsides is that no dogs are allowed, even in the gardens. I'm not a fan of TMs politics, but a huge fan of his building restoration, the cheap prices and the fact he repeats in every edition of Spoons News that he will never allow dogs in his pubs. He understands it's a divided issue, so is being clear on his stance for the customers. It means those of us who don't like having dogs around them when socialising have actually got a safe place to be.

HappiestSleeping · 01/01/2024 15:49

The dogs thing is not a policy decision but an insurance one. There was an "incident" on the premises and since then a blanket ban of dogs. Don't know all the details, but it's a completely understandable position.

I'm not a big fan of his politics, and eagerly await the promised lower beer prices that he was expecting, however you have to give him some credit for naming his very successful business after his maths teacher, who told him he was useless and wouldn't amount to anything.
