Anyone else dreading returning to work?

Had such a lovely time with my kids and husband and seeing family I absolute dread the return of everyday life. Working all day 5 days a week barely spending any decent time with my kids.

It’s even made me think about leaving my well paid corporate job and whether it’s even worth it anymore. I’ll never be rich anyway or well off enough to not worry.

What is the point in missing out on so much life for a bit of extra money.

I work part time (school hours) for a charity. It's not well paid but it's rewarding and I'm at the school gates for drop off and pick up.

Our holidays are modest - camping etc but we enjoy them.

My friends working stressful jobs in business and law need fabulous holidays because their day to day lives are so stressful.

I am happy with my work - life balance.

Shrouds don't have pockets.

Nope all is good. Thanks for your concern. I would rather bring my children up than anyone else

I actually really like my job but I've had such a nice time with my son and dogs that I really don't want to go back tomorrow. It doesn't help that I know I'm walking into some major projects/ staffing issues and that the first 4 months of the year is going to be really full on :-(

WhatACluster · 01/01/2024 18:18

It’s dawned on me around 4pm I have to go back tomorrow and for the 1st time since I started this job I don’t want to go back…

I am thinking of updating my CV and have a look to see what’s out there 🤷‍♀️

My kids are older now so not as reliant on me/DH so maybe it times for a shake up!

U2HasTheEdge · 01/01/2024 18:35

I am, and I only work three days a week at the moment.

It's not the job, I just loved having the time to spend my days doing what I wanted, like working on my hobbies and having lie ins.

However, I also know that going to work is what really makes me appreciate having time off. When I was a 'SAHM' to school-aged children, I really didn't appreciate the spare time I had and I ended up feeling unmotivated to do anything anyway.

Aquarius1234 · 01/01/2024 19:03

I think even if you don't mind and have no issues with your job, after a holiday where everyone has been off, there is the back to school weird feeling.

Aquarius1234 · 01/01/2024 19:05

If you dislike or hate your job and certain people, then it can taint your time off and holidays.

369damnshesfine · 01/01/2024 19:06

I’m looking forward to going back to work but not tomorrow.

I’d like a couple more days off but I know I’d end up spending them eating crap and sitting around and so I’m using weight loss as my motivation!

Flo22 · 01/01/2024 19:06

I have my own money but I'd rather bring my child up

369damnshesfine · 01/01/2024 19:08

Flo22 · 01/01/2024 16:28

I don't work. My partner takes care of things. I love it. I can't imagine working snd missing out on my child's life.

I love being at home and with my child but I love having a job.

I couldn’t imagine life without a career and I’d hate to be just a mum.

Even if I win the lottery I would have to start a charity or do volunteer work or something.

Oh that's funny, I thought you were a single parent who was starting a new job in January.

Dancingqueen90 · 01/01/2024 19:20

The rolling 9 day fortnight idea is brilliant and has given me food for thought. I think I am going to ask for similar. Any tips?
My bosses are not very flexible so I need to sell it to them. I don't have the energy right now to look for another role but need to improve my work life balance.

Who also thinks men go to prostitutes if you don't dress nicely for men at home 😂

Flo22 are you staying nice and dry out of the rain under that bridge?

Timely thread retiring in April I’m early 60’s.
Never been a job it’s what I just love to do and so rewarding sad at times too.
Will no doubt still pop in and help out if needed.
DH and I will be able to travel more for longer periods of time while we still have our health.

Our son is now in charge of the day to day running of the practice and our DGD our DD daughter, showing an interest to become a vet.
She loves to come in at weekends to cuddle the animals recovering after ops.

blueberry1976 · 01/01/2024 19:39

Can those who love your jobs please tell us folk who hate ours what it is you do?

MrsQTip · 01/01/2024 19:41

Yes been off since the 23rd. I’ve just made my lunch box - very despondent right now 😢

I do a 9 day fortnight- it does really help with work/ life balance, or helps make a job you dislike more bearable.

You need to demonstrate to your boss how this will benefit you and not impact their business. Do you have work that would need covering on your non-working day, if so what would happen? What day will you choose as your non-working day- is that a key day for the business or can you choose a day with less impact? If your annual leave allowance is pro-rata you will need to do the sums to calculate how many days A/L you will need to use to top up your longer days as part of 9 day fortnight (eg for me on 37hr contract my days are 8hr 14 mins long on 9 day fortnight rather than 7.5hrs for 10 day fortnight - I need to use around 0.9days of my a/l allowance to top up the longer days of annual leave but this is more than compensated by the 26 days off/ year I get off as my non working days).

Legally an employer has to consider all work pattern change requests from and can only turn them down on business impact grounds, not because of the reason you want the change in work pattern for (eg an employer couldn’t permit a parents request as they want it for childcare but refuse a childfree persons request if the business impacts were the same).

Hedjwitch · 01/01/2024 19:52

After a shitty Christmas with dh in hospital, work will at least be a change of scene and someone to talk to,so not dreading it.

whyamiawakestill · 01/01/2024 20:04

I'm the owner of a business these last few years have been extra hard for the first time in my 20 years of running it I think I'm done. I survived covid, this last year of bloody awful sales but I have no clue what's next and have responsibilities of staffs incomes and livelihood but I can't ignore this feeling that I've just run out of puff and want a simpler life now.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 01/01/2024 21:39

@blueberry1976 I love my job so much it's my username.

Notsurehwhattdo · 01/01/2024 21:59

I'm not dreading going back to work tomorrow as there's no pressure and the work is interesting to me, I just can't be arsed!

I'd rather have a lie-in, read some books to my 3 year old, go and play football with the 7 year old. Alas, I need the money to pay the bills, the same as most people!

Oliveandcheese · 01/01/2024 22:06

I think this means you need to change jobs!

I did last year (and I also work part time). For the first time ever I’m actually looking forward to returning to work. I think it also helps that I’m part time and spend lots of time with the kids during the week too.

@Flo22 I brought my DD up. Was there for nursery/school drop offs + pick ups. Only in nursery 4 days per week 9am-3pm but I still worked FT so didn't set my career and earning power back, full up NI contributions and my DD saw her Mum working and having her own money.

"my DD saw her Mum working and having her own money"

My Dad provided for his family while my Mum was at home with us... Can't say the idea that she was spending my father's money (insinuating SAHM's are some sort of sponger), ever entered my head. They were a team, he earn't the money, she did pretty much everything else.

As I said uptrhread, I work an extra 45 minutes a day for nine days and have every other Friday off.

I pitched it as I'd be flexible with my days if need be such as events that fell on my non working Friday and essentially they'd be getting the same amount of work out of me as I'm still doing my full time hours.

Dropping a day a week would have affected my pension and pay far too much so this seemed a good alternative.

Most of the creative London based agencies I deal with have a 9 day fortnight as standard (if staff want the option). It's just my industry that has been slow to catch on!
