“I wasn't asleep”

QuitChewingMyPlectrum · 30/12/2023 23:41

What is this phenomenon? Is it only in our household or does anyone else experience this.…

Watching TV, DH has eyes closed and is snoring.
Me: Why don't you go to bed to sleep? You must need it
Him: I wasn't sleeping

HE WAS!

It genuinely winds me up - why not admit you were sleeping. What's to gain?

My DH is a sleep denier too. Bedrooms are for sleeping in not living rooms where people are watching the telly. I don't know why it annoys me so much but I can't stand it.

Fuckmeicantbebothered · 31/12/2023 00:19

Lol just reply with, you might need to see a Dr about the snoring whilst you're awake then...😅

DinaofCloud9 · 31/12/2023 00:20

Oh my mum does this constantly.

DH does this, and I'm also unsure why it gives me awful RAGE!

Differentstarts · 31/12/2023 00:29

My partner does this and he gets really mad when I say it

MadeOfAllWork · 31/12/2023 00:32

I bloody love a nap. I’m brilliant at napping.

But I’m also one of those people who refuses to believe I was asleep. DH will tell me I was snoring and I’ll insist I was awake. Sometimes when I’m watching a boring film to please DH I will go to sleep and be dreaming while still having my eyes open and be following the film! It’s really hard to explain but my mind will drift off and I’ll have all these dream like thoughts and know that I’m asleep but I’m also still watching the film.

StellaLaBella · 31/12/2023 00:35

Yep. I wouldn't mind but I can't actually hear the tv over his snoring because he had dodgy sinus surgery years ago, and he STILL gets the hump if I - a. point out he should probably go to bed or b. I just give up and go to bed myself. Make it make sense

TeaGinandFags · 31/12/2023 00:37

Nope.

Never heard of it.

Aww, I could never fall asleep like this until I had our little one and now I micro nap in the afternoon/evenings, my DH has LOTS of pictures of me like this.. it's bad enough that he shows them to people but I do hope he doesn't put them on the internet! 😕

In fairness I don't demand to watch things then fall asleep to them, but if we are watching something I want to watch DH pauses it or turns it off until I wake up again, I do the same with him. I do get secretly irked sometimes if DH asks me if I'm asleep, probably because he wakes me up by asking, but I think that's a natural reaction to being woken up!

I think people saying 'go to bed!' are missing the point a little, sometimes you just need a quick nap them you're okay for the rest of the night!

AcrossthePond55 · 31/12/2023 00:48

Oh God, yes! DH is a pro at it!

I've devised my little 'strategy' which involves turning the volume down very slowly over about 5 minutes until it's barely audible. If he doesn't stir, I turn it off. Works like a charm!

dontgobaconmyheart · 31/12/2023 00:50

Honestly I think this is to do with toxic masculinity really, some bizarre taught notion that you cannot be vulnerable (which sleep is, I suppose) and that you must have a tight control of things/yourself and that to a degree, admitting being tired is along the same lines, like admitting you are less capable or not capable or in control (in that mentality).

I’m the opposite! I’ll close my eyes and pretend to be asleep if I want leaving alone 😂

Crackl3andpop · 31/12/2023 00:51

my house too!!! Often followed by “I can’t / don’t nap so I know I wasn’t asleep”. I film him snoring away now… he still insists he’s awake🙄

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 31/12/2023 01:01

I have found my people.
I find it extremely annoying. Not the fact that he is sleepy and has a nap, but the stubborn denying.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 31/12/2023 01:05

My dh does it too! He also talks in his sleep which can be hilarious. The other night at 2am I was up feeding baby. I was making a bottle in kitchen and he came in and asked if I want him to sort out bowling then. I asked what bowling you on about? The bowling! He said. So we got in bed and he carries on he needs to sort the bowling out. Tells me it’s baby bowling where they teach the baby to bowl 😂In the morning he had no clue what I was on about when I asked if he had managed to sort bowling yet.

fuchsteufelswild · 31/12/2023 01:06

Just ask them what happened on TV as you were browsing MN just now, works every time.

Silvers11 · 31/12/2023 01:13

Oh Yes! Mine does this too!! Insists he was 'only resting' his eyes and he heard everything on the telly - in spite of the fact he has been snoring so loudly that I was having difficulty hearing the telly myself 😂😂😂

Shuggie1234 · 31/12/2023 01:20

currently on my phone next to my husband sounding like a fucking walrus 🤬🤯

Evolutionarygoals · 31/12/2023 01:22

I feel your pain OP. It's especially annoying when combined with the complaint that he's "so tired, it took me ages to fall asleep last night". No. No it didn't! And I know this because I'm the one who had to try to fall asleep next to the sound of a chainsaw

Mummyoflittledragon · 31/12/2023 01:31

Yeh mine does this too. Turn the tv off blaring football he wakes up. 🙄

Edit to include: also chainsaw snorer.

Christmasmug · 31/12/2023 01:37

Yep, sleep denial! We all do it in our house, I swore blind I was watching the football earlier, til I realised it was over and I didn't actually know the final score BlushGrin

caringcarer · 31/12/2023 01:43

LessOfMe99 · 30/12/2023 23:42

My DH is exactly the same 😬

Mine too. I get annoyed because his snoring can be loud and spoils the film I'm watching.

AlwaysSomethingWithTeens · 31/12/2023 01:54

I am - once again - on the sofa in the hope of a peaceful night's sleep.

DH ticks all boxes mentioned. Falls asleep on sofa (usually half lying on the remote...) Snores so loudly I have to turn the TV up - then wakes up and complains it's too loud...

The only good bit is I usually get to go to bed first and can get to sleep without him snoring. Didn't work tonight sadly.

But his snoring's not a problem, no siree. Even though I'm the one who's disturbed despite wearing earplugs Angry

@FreshWinterMorning - random 70s crap here too. Why?!? He was a feckin small kid in the 70s.

ilikemethewayiam · 31/12/2023 01:57

Mine is never asleep, just resting his eyes! Same response every time he’s sparked out snoring like a truck! Like when do eyelids need to rest because they are overworked!
